When & why did you give up your 80’s hairstyle?

1993. It took me a few years to finally stop with the teasing & spraying of my bangs. I wish I had done it sooner!

Went from 80s street punk hair to shaving it all off for a while in the early 90s (remember Susan Powter?) then grew it out to my waist and stayed with variations on that for a few decades. The hair spray, dippity do, PERM and bangs were a mercifully short middle school phase.

Mine was longer. 1995. I'd moved from Arkansas to Las Vegas, NV and realized that I could stop with the teasing and then stop using hairspray altogether. It was another 3-4 years before I grew my bangs out and never looked back.

Started to change it up my senior year. I swear everyone got crimpers for Christmas and I got tired of looking like everyone else and washing clumps of Aquanet/Stiff Stuff glue out of my hair. Then I got pregnant in ‘91 and my hair wouldn’t hold a curl for more than 10 minutes. For some reason perimenopause caused my hair to get curly so if I were to get bangs and more layers, I’d be rocking the 80’s look with no effort.

View on Reddit #65176121

MuttsandHuskies@reddit

Ponytail they’re higher or lower. If you reach back to the back of your head and find that little knot that sticks out, there’s a nerve right under there that is triggered by pressure and for some people at leads to headaches or migraines. So ponytail higher lower than that and you’ll be fine.
View on Reddit #65181149

PuhnTang@reddit

I’ve just spent five minutes feeling the back of my head and I have no idea what you’re talking about.
View on Reddit #65194659

MuttsandHuskies@reddit

It’s a tiny little notch with a little bump above it, about 4 fingers width up from where your head and neck meet. It’s straight up the center. One of my migraine doctors actually told me the ponytail I had on was causing the migraine I had right then. If you’re prone to migraines pushing in that area too much can trigger one.

Grunge wasn't about being a dirtbag, tho. The style evolved out of punks growing their hair long.
View on Reddit #65200292

Not_Half@reddit

Interesting. I was in my late teens/early 20s in the 90s and would beg to differ, though. Not so much the girls but there were plenty of "dirtbag" looking young men.
View on Reddit #65201391

ObiWanKnieval@reddit

As was I. Statistically speaking, I don't doubt there were some unkempt, hygiene deficient young men into the grunge scene. But that's just the nature of certain young men no matter what genre they're into. Grunge bands and (their followers) usually had long hair, but they weren't unwashed hippies by any stretch of the imagination. They didn't live out of vans like Deadheads. Early grunge crowds were mostly well-groomed white suburban college kids with long hair and docs.

Only after I learned that the oral steroids I had to take impacted the effectiveness of a perm. Think I changed my 80's makeup style then too.... I will never give up my 80's music though. I'll be blasting Twisted Sister, Def Leppard and Guns-n-Roses until my last days.

Never, I guess. I keep my hair a bit shorter (for business reasons and severe inertia problems getting to the barber), but I haven't really ever changed my hairstyle. I ALWAYS had 80's big hair for my entire life, naturally thick and very curly by Mother Nature herself. I didn't need to do anything to achieve that look, didn't even need hairspray. Everyone envied my 80's hair and asked where I got my awesome perm, and I would say it's NOT a perm, it's my natural hair. That brief moment in time was fantastic for me and my tresses.....then came the 90's and the straight look was back in style.

My hair wouldn't hold a big 80's style if you threatened its very existence. It vanquished perms and aquanet without breaking a sweat. It sneered at gel. I wore it either long and straight (no bangs), or in the mid-eighties I cut it to a long layered bob.
View on Reddit #65181237

CyndiIsOnReddit@reddit

My hair routine meant getting up at 5 am and first straightening then hot rolling then pulling each roller and straightening again, then using the crimping iron strategically for maximum "lift". When I started working in pre-k classes in a hot sweaty school I would just pull my hair up curly and do the bangs up tall, but by the mid-90s I was working construction and I just kept it braided. It's still braided, but if I keep it down I'm letting it be curly and natural.

I had the most cringe worthy haircut. Not just a low key mullet but a full on bad bleach job, spikey on top, with with 2 parallel lines shaved into the sides. A lot of effort just to look like an asshole. My school had a canned food drive with different rewards for hitting increasing goals of cans collected. For some ungodly number far in excess of anything that had ever been collected before, I said I'd cut my hair. The student body rallied to eliminate a true eyesore from the universe and smashed even whatever that lofty goal was by a significant margin and they gave the the gift (although I wasn't smart enough to recognize it as such at the time) of a normal haircut rather than the "Hey look at at me! I'm an asshole!" beacon that I had attached to the bowling ball that I insist on calling my head. Sometimes the universe conspires to save you from yourself, so thanks Universe. I owe you one.
