What Was Corporate Life Like in 90s America?

I worked in IT in the late 90's as the Dot.com boom approached. IT workers were in demand and turnover was high. This meant that the bosses had to look the other way on some of our liberties like long lunch breaks and smoke breaks. I liked roaming the other floors and checking out the conference rooms. For most meetings they would bring in sandwiches and snacks. Someone would leave all of the food on a cart near the door, several minutes before the meeting. If my timing was right, I could snatch a sandwich before anyone arrived. I miss the happy hours, but I don't miss the work. Too many incompetent managers that only contributed to the turnover, including my own.

I feel this, but I’m not in a position to retire. I’ll probably be coding until I’m 70. There may still be a demand for a golden child. The new grads and unicorns usually want the big $$ so they apply at FAANG. Jobs that can’t pay as much usually don’t attract unicorns, or a golden child. The pay is less but the work life balance is better.

When Challenger happened we weren’t taught any coping skills. The teachers told us they didn’t want to hear any jokes about it. Nothing more. Any sense of tragedy was swept under the rug.

I’m a software engineer and it’s scary to see companies pushing for the incorporation of AI. Writing code is just one part of my job. I’ll use AI for troubleshooting and training, but the code it creates is mostly junk that has to be cleaned up.

This could be a fun debate

Gen-X and trauma posts

My trauma stems from toxic masculinity and the stigma of mental health issues. Any talk of feelings was usually met with “shut up and drink another beer you p***y!!”

Sometimes my skip manager brings me a task they claim is urgent. The expectation is to drop everything and accommodate this task that was poorly managed. I always tell them I’m currently working on another urgent task, so which one takes priority? It melts their brain when they actually have to think and manage tasks accordingly.

Do GenXers really not care anymore, or does it come down to home life and upbringing?

I care but there’s only so much I can do. When it comes to politics and current events I feel like a drop in the ocean. I used to get angry over the smallest injustice, thinking I could make a difference. These days I have to carefully pick my battles.

Anyone also play before? :)

> This looks bad on you and it feels bad. This should not look or feel bad at all. Any criticism or backlash should be directed to my manager. As long as I convey to management that my current project will be delayed, it's out of my hands. I'm not going to put in 60 hour weeks to complete both in time.

Perl. My first job as a junior was on a Perl project. The language is easy enough to learn but it lacks strong typing. For weeks all of the senior devs were plagued by a math bug that would offset the cart total by a penny. Drove them nuts. The solution was to add 0 to the $$ amounts to force Perl to treat them like numbers instead of strings. Good times.
