Why is the cost of living so high?

Posted by RHGM22@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 563 comments

OffMyDave@reddit

I wouldn't describe current labour as left. There's no imagination or vision, just absolutely running scared of the challenge, trying to survive, rather than actually improve the country. They've paid back their unions, to an extent, and made everyone else pay for it. We need a government to bring back rail and water etc into public ownership. Invest in infrastructure (roads, rail, energy). And raise taxes on high net worths and corporations. The only possibility currently is Green, who won't win a majority. So best we can hope for is another coalition, but we've seen how those go

Housing is a basic cost but not included in cpi inflation, so wages have massively been left behind by real inflation across uncounted classes (housing). There are also extra costs that didn't used to be necessary ie healthcare

If youre really bothered about staying in the field, just get a shit entry level job somewhere that does stuff loosely related to what you want. If you're good, your expertise will get noticed and you can move around in the company. Keep positive, call in favours

How can I return company laptop when they don't let me? Would I get in trouble in the future?

Posted by lavenderkir@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 78 comments

OffMyDave@reddit

It would cost so much to sue you, much more than the price of a laptop. They will be on service plans / own so many at high volume they just won't care. Its like most things in huge organisations, it's just not one single persons responsibility so no one will pursue it, as its not like there is a person responsible for getting your machine back. I would just hold on to it and if ever get asked you can provide it, with accompanying evidence of your attempts to return it

I'm not sure, most of this info is available online though. Try dbs provider companies as they tend to have examples and case studies, as they tend to offer a "what to do if something flags" service to employers

As far as I'm aware the police have some discretion on what they disclose if they feel the conviction is relevant to the activity you would be doing. I know people who definitely got banned for drink driving who became teachers less than 6 years later

Basically the wise move is to buy shit loads of houses set up for this market (which will be huge in 30 years) and get paid by the government to provide what they themselves should be doing

Yep, I agree. You can get a job but that's an outcome that's not entirely in uour control, what is in your control is looking after yourself. Taking care of your appearance, health, adding skills. The job will come when you would employ you. Would you employ you right now?

Yeh but with those things, you're generally not being admitted and being dependent. Once you are admitted and become dependent, you get the full terrible experience as they don't have the staff to do that properly

It went to shit because that is where you actually need proper care - the kind of care that doesn't scale. The rest of it doesn't need much actual care, so you don't notice the funding cuts as much

Are there reasonable adjustments for right to work check?

Posted by moss_2703@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 7 comments

OffMyDave@reddit

Generally yes they should check in person but the company only faces a max £20k fine if found to knowingly employ someone without right to work. So in this case, I doubt there's much risk for the company, you have right to work, you have provided evidence, and you have a disability making it very difficult to fully comply. If this was all documented then I wouldn't be losing much sleep over this. Bear in mind these laws are to stop rogue companies doing this on purpose I.e. knowingly breaking the law

If my interest on my student loan is more than my repayment where is my money going is the debt just an arbitrary valued assigned to me to make sure I continue paying for the whole term?

Posted by Tigimon42@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 27 comments

Its a terrible tax though as anti progressive. You escape the tax the more you earn. And 9% of pre tax income over 26k is a fucking steep tax, it's a lot of money

Do quiet people or observers in social situations creep you out or make you feel weird?

Posted by KingKilo9@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 63 comments

OffMyDave@reddit

Been in that situation with particular groups, in the end just gave up. They were all so nerdy and boring as well, it actually drove me crazy. If I see very very shy people in a group, I try to talk to them, as being introverted myself, I know they have things to say, just struggle being open enough to say them. This still normally results in awkward silences but I feel better that I at least tried to include them

Can someone who understands finance explain to me why the cost of living crisis is worse now, in 2025, than it was in the 2008 recession?

Posted by Mental-Risk6949@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 55 comments

OffMyDave@reddit

No it's likely to continue to get worse. We never recovered from 2008. People who are too young to remember what life was like before 2008, many pay rises, job growth, economy booming, lots of disposable income, lots of credit available. Good times. We've not had anything close to that since. Government has sold off all it's assets, we have no assets, it's all very bleak

We do ok but we still have very little leftover, it's incredibly expensive, I don't really see how others on less do it. What I will say is that your 30s is where your wage starts to shoot up, so your position likely to improve as your kids get older

2 kids, had first at 32. Sole 58k. Joint 117k Just makes it more difficult to move jobs as need flexibility, nursery pickup times, not too much travel etc. Not a barrier as such, just limits the pool slightly where I didn't have to think of that before

What immediately actionable policy would help increase birth rate in the UK?

Posted by Ok-Butterfly-7582@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 1313 comments

OffMyDave@reddit

The population has been falling in UK for a while, and it will fall precipitously over next 10-20 years as birth rate so low. The net population has been increasing recently due to immigration, literally unavoidable as we don't have enough young people to do the work, and it will only grow faster. Decreasing population not an option unless you want to go back to the dark ages
