In my Midwest college town, a group of frat boys jumped me one night because I (F) wore baggy clothes, a buzz cut, and no makeup. When they figured out I was a girl (I was maybe 16 or 17), they abruptly stopped. Because apparently they were too much of “gentlemen” to beat up a female punk. Gentlemen only go three against one against male punks.

Yes, the cramping! I’ve never had a child but I suspect this is what early contractions must feel like. I had unfortunately booked a vacation to manhattan with my bf soon afterward because I had no idea how stupid that would be. We would walk down the street and every so often we had to stop so I could use all of my concentration to just stand still and not scream.

I had an ACL replacement. It went pretty much as expected, but they had to leave a shunt in my knee for fluid to drain for a few days afterward. When I went into the office to have it removed, they led me to an examination room as far as possible from the waiting room, which was not a good sign. They removed my dressings, and the surgeon came into the room to examine me and remove the shunt. I guess he was used to working on people under general anesthesia, because when he pulled it out I swear it felt like part of my femur went with it. I clapped my hands over my mouth and started to quietly sob. He seemed genuinely surprised. Fucking surgeons.

So that is something that any governor could accomplish, and she accomplished it, being governor. How exactly does that make her fake? Sounds like it makes her competent. And finding a governor doing governor things irritating makes you sound like a misogynist or maybe one of the freaks who wanted to kidnap her.

Disclaimer: I have never breastfed, but have watched sister/friends do it. Seems like it would be difficult, I’m impressed the babe could successfully feed while she was walking. Generally it seems like walking would be too much movement. I also think it sounds like not a great place for an infant. There are loud noises and potentially harmful chemicals or dust in the air. I think it’s possible the baby was getting fussy and the boob was a pacifier. You’re not supposed to leave a baby unattended in a car, so if she had to take the babe with her, a good way to keep them from getting grumpy is to stick a boob in their mouth. Doesn’t sound like a great idea, but I would trust that mom knows how to handle her kid.

Gen X, how did you quit smoking?

Posted by Chrisgodzilla80@reddit | GenX | View on Reddit | 704 comments

MiasmAgain@reddit

I smoked for about 30 years, similar to your rate (pack/day). It's the only drug that I ever got addicted to, and Dog knows I tried them all. I add this because it is no small thing to quit nicotine. I quit at least 3 or 4 times before I successfully did it for good. Every one of them was brutal. Just trying to not sugar-coat it, be prepared to battle a mighty foe. The most important thing to remember is that after 72 hours, the physical bond is broken; after that, it's all a fucking head game. Pro tip: DO NOT CONSUME ALCOHOL. Ramped my cravings up really bad. I found nicotine gum to be the most effective. With pieces of gum, you can treat each craving as it comes. Lozenges also have that feature. I felt that waiting as long as possible to use nicotine to relieve the cravings helped me get to a place where I could manage the uge without any nicotine. Good luck, and fuck those cancer sticks!

A second grade teacher told me I was so smart I could start taking home the third grade workbook. But since I had not sat in on the third grade class, there were things I did not understand, so that’s what I wrote in the space. I was fucking six years old and too foolish to go ask my parents for help. The next day the teacher kept me after class to discuss my work (I thought), held the workbook up between us, and tore it in half. “I guess you weren’t ready after all!” I was horrified and never told my parents, since I was sure I would prove a disappointment to them too. Probably why I never did get the hang of math. What a fucking sadist, that Mrs. Combs.

My mom was very sex positive, and kinda shocked me at a young age with how highly she spoke of it. Flash forward to my teens, she never sat down with me again and talked about birth control. Then got furious with me when I got knocked up. I didn’t even want her to know, but one of her friends saw me coming out of the clinic and ratted me out. Thanks, mom.

OK, X’ers: Has anyone gotten LASIK? If so, how is it working out?

Posted by RunningPirate@reddit | GenX | View on Reddit | 53 comments

MiasmAgain@reddit

I got it, was extremely pleased with the outcome. I was approx. -3.75 to -4.00 and not being totally helpless without glasses was fantastic. I put it off for a long time, finally went for it when I learned about the Wavefront technology (basic lasers approximate an overall correction, Wavefront maps the exact topology of your eyeball and makes a more accurate correction). Made my eyeballs less flexible so I need readers now, but super glad I did it. It is a profoundly weird and slightly uncomfortable procedure, but never really painful. What they don’t tell you in the brochure is what your cornea will smell like when they’re making the laser incisions. Kinda like burnt hair. The whole thing takes less than 30 minutes, but be prepared to have some very bizarre sensations on your eyeballs. They give you plenty of numbing drops but feeling them tug on the flap of cornea they just cut is fucking WILD. Don’t freak out, it’ll be okay.

I don’t think that’s true (being one of us). Gen X and all the other named generations are a direct reflection of the socioeconomic trends in the US. Not every country experienced a post WWII boom, hence not every country’s 55-75 year olds share the same characteristics as ours. I think little Apartheid Richie Rich experienced practically nothing that we did here. No Reaganomics, no Cold War angst, no Circle Jerks. Sharing a birth decade isn’t enough to earn him a seat in the room.
