What is your favourite go-to response when a user states "but I'm not tech savvy"?

It really depends. I get a bit irked if it's something in the Office suite that any normal person should be able to do or it's a quick Google search, and it's the 3rd-4th time you've called me today. But again it depends on the attitude. I couldn't do Finances job nor would I want to be working in Compliance.

Make a snarky comment like "HR should do a better job at vetting people who say they can use a computer". The users I hate the most are those that are so dumb that they just think everybody else is stupid. Not worth your energy, honestly

Linux. Sorry to be that guy but I decided to go with Fedora last year and it's one of the best decisions I've made. The built-in KRDC tool is a god send for having to RDP into all the Windows machines we run. It's a solid OS. On the side of all my Hyper-V clusters and Cisco network, I have Linux boxes running Zabbix and Security Onion to monitor everything, even the crappy Unitrends backup boxes I have to endure are Linux based.

I'm so sick of end users submitting tickets that they've used AI to write it. Stuff like asking me to go off and investigate why they got a flipping phishing email.. did you update your job on LinkedIn? Do you remember your phishing training? Do you see the big yellow and red banner on every external email telling you that this email comes from outside the organisation and to be cautious on links and attachments???

Anyone leave IT and was happy?

What has been your biggest technical mistake so far in your career?

I was a noob and got sent to work up at a school. During the takeover my senior guy changed the admin passwords as we generally do during a takeover. Some days later the Internet stopped working for certain people. I had no idea what was causing the proxy issues. Because we tried getting rid of the old tech company they weren't helpful at all. This went on for a few days, eventually it clicked, I found where I needed to update the AD sync tool for the proxy server and everything started working again. It wasn't caused by me really but I got the brunt of it, tbh I think it's given me some PTSD which causes me to get a bit irritable with certain end user attitudes.

Been at my current place for 4years. I've learned to not answer the phone to certain 'repeat offenders' in hopes that they will either sort the problem out themselves or eventually create a ticket which I can queue up.

I had my first tiny run-in and I hope it's not going to snowball. Had a caller telling me that a monitor wasn't coming on. So I was doing the usual troubleshooting and at the same time they're making silly suggestions, so I just asked why they were suggesting it and the response was 'oh I thought I'd chatgpt it on my phone'. So I politely asked them if they could just not. It was just the VGA cable where someone hadn't screwed it in and it was out a little bit

Apparently british people "raise" tickets instead of creating them

I got asked "while you're there.." to find out if the UPS had a network card and could I connect it for the monitoring team. I was new to go to sites after slugging it out on the help desk.. I did the dreaded 'APC RJ45 Console port to switch' trick and then SILENCE. Took me a few seconds to work out that the entire cabinet had gone down and this business goes out. While I'm panicking to get everything turned back on this old lady store assistant kept Popping-In to find out when she could start taking payments again on her till. Firewall wouldn't boot up so I had to tether my mobile to download a backup we had back in the office. Back when we had 3G and the company was a shooting range for the very wealthy based out in the woodlands. Took forever to get that backup. Suffice to say, I didn't get a bollocking but had to live with the shame of being That Guy That Took Down The Internet every time I had to visit. Sucks going to a customer site where everyone sees you as a f-ing moron

I feel this so much. We got some bot or someone that sends new colleagues emails from random Gmail accounts, and it's only when they post their new job to LinkedIn. I've got impersonation protection enabled and built a VIP list of random ways to spell the VIP's names for it to check. We tell people that NOBODY from the company will ask for your mobile number from a private email.. but yet here I am enraged by this very comment!!! Oh I could cry

I feel this and it's also the same reason why I don't socialise with my team. In an older job I had I used to socialise and we would often go to the pub or play games but the moment someone gets promoted or decides to leave it rapidly changes the dynamics. So now I don't socialise or buy into the 'we're family here' mentality. I turn up and I work and I go home.

These are all great points you've raised. If I may also add, social media platforms have impacted creativity by a lot. I remember in the late 90's early 2000's we had an abundant of websites with all sorts of fun videos and games you could play. Now these platforms are just geared towards people arguing with each other

I was getting fed up with adverts and how everything wanted you to have an account first. So I switched over to Fedora and it's been pretty sweet. I sadly still have to remote into a windows box to get some bits done. We still use Hyper-V on clusters and we have Windows servers and stations still.. all the monitoring is done with Linux. It just works.

Had my share once. I just never give them the satisfaction. Kill them with kindness I guess. Had to call once to arrange a site visit, he clapped at me and said something like it would be quicker to just go and buy a laptop from a well known market. So I said if you'd like to do that and then spend hours on the phone getting it set up like the one I'm holding for him now then be my guess. He said no it's okay and I'd see him tomorrow. Got to site and he was a completely different character. Fuck em

Recently we've hired a manager and he was cheeky enough to ask me to convert his VHS tapes into digital copies. He implied that I did it for him while working, politely told him to F-Off.

According to Gov UK - [Work Reference](https://www.gov.uk/work-reference) # Bad references If you think you’ve been given an unfair or misleading reference, you may be able to claim damages in court. Your previous employer must be able to back up the reference, such as by supplying examples of warning letters. You must be able to show that: * it’s misleading or inaccurate * you ‘suffered a loss’ – for example, the withdrawal of a job offer # Discrimination and unfair dismissal You might also be able to claim damages in court if: * the employment contract says you must be given a reference, but the employer refuses * you were sacked because your employer was asked for a reference while you were still working for them

It's the same wherever you go. Planned Firewall replacement during the day. Telling everybody when it's going to happen. Telling them that there will be no Internet until the new one is installed. I guarantee, half way through, someone will come and interrupt me and say something stupid like 'my wifi's not working'.

I took a call from an end user. Her password had expired and she obviously ignored the warning message telling her it would. So I helped her reset it and then soon as we were done I got an email from her saying she was having problems sending emails :) She tried to email me while her Outlook was refusing to send emails.
