LastPass is disgusting. One fuck up? Sure that happens… But they're consistently getting breached. Just move on to something else, anything else. Really.

Left MSP for Internal IT - Early Thoughts

Killbot6@reddit

Congrats. My life is so much better since I made the transition, and I bet it will be for you as well. Working for an MSP was just dreadful for me, client expectations & my mental exhaustion were at an all-time high. Internal IT is just a vibe compared to MSP work. You have more time to do things right, and make sure things are getting done correctly. MSP life was patching holes in a ship while still taking on water. Internal is just a joy.

Got fired and I deserved it.

No dude. You need better protections as an employee. Life sucks, and we all go through horrors, but you shouldn’t need to be at 100%, 100% of the time. I’m happy you’re taking it the best you can, and trying to better yourself.. but that previous employer sucks, and you didn’t deserve that.

More states are requiring operating systems to ask for age via ID, such as Windows, Mac, Linux, etc. How do us hackers fight back?

Make its package that is packaged with the OS at install, and give the user the option to uninstall it while going through that process. This will allow them to satisfy the government requirements, and give the users a way to tell them they don't want it.

What distro do you use and why?

Posted by ReferenceNatural87@reddit | linux | View on Reddit | 379 comments

Killbot6@reddit

Manjaro Linux. Pretty nice, lots of quality of life stuff for a desktop OS. It also has access to AUR, since it’s based on it.. which is extremely helpful if you hit the occasional bump in the road. For servers, I normally prefer Debian, or Alpine depending on the use case.

Are surge protectors really that important?

Posted by Sufa1L@reddit | buildapc | View on Reddit | 282 comments

Killbot6@reddit

It’s important, especially as the grid gets more and more taxed by AI server farms. If you’re going to spend all that money on a nice computer, you might as well spend another 10-15 on a decent surge protector. If you really really care, maybe get a UPS instead.

Killbot6@reddit

That doesn’t sound unreasonable. But rails used them get upgraded every generation and with how power hungry new Nvidia GPUs can be it’s my only guess. I would look for a newer model, same wattage. A newer model will have more updated rails that would work better for modern GPUs.

Small business employee laptop setup

Posted by olalilalo@reddit | sysadmin | View on Reddit | 24 comments

Killbot6@reddit

You said their is a domain? Setup AD. AD can do most of that. It’s the old way, and the not as efficient as Intune, but it’ll work. It’ll take a lot of extra work tuning group policy, but completely doable. For the remote? You’d probably wanna look into a some kind of free self hosted option, but that’ll probably bring some costs at some point aswell. I’ve heard good things about RustDesk, but have no experience working with it or setting it up.

Is AI an IT Problem?

Posted by Greenscreener@reddit | sysadmin | View on Reddit | 205 comments

Killbot6@reddit

We blocked all IT websites on our network, except for enterprise Copilot. As Copilot has at least said they will save guard the info and data that is input into it, and not use it. Do I really trust it? Not really, but our C-Suite team has decided they need it and disregard anything else said on the topic.

9070 XT vs 5070Ti: At what cost?

Posted by The__DZA@reddit | buildapc | View on Reddit | 88 comments

Killbot6@reddit

9070xt has AI cores built into it with FSR 4 showing the same performance as DLSS is not better in some scenarios. To use the same “nvidia ray tracing go burrr” argument for this specific generation of AMD cards is not correct. As previously stated, the only edge at this point is professional workload scenarios.

At what point is your team too far behind in knowledge to catch up?

Posted by wysoft@reddit | sysadmin | View on Reddit | 209 comments

Killbot6@reddit

Yeah, especially for a domain controller. AD is a such a visual thing anyway, so them being able to see the OUs would obviously help.. But in another note, if you installed RSAT then why not just walk them through how to install and use it.

How do you guys handle OneDrive files when an employee leaves?

Posted by BoomSchtik@reddit | sysadmin | View on Reddit | 164 comments

Killbot6@reddit

We have a software that downloads the OneDrive to a back up once we put them in a specific OU. That way we don’t have to keep them licensed. We can pass out access after all that.

MSPs are garbage that produce garbage results. Only take a job with one if you are wanting more experience in the industry or the market is bad. Run and don't look back. Your stress will be 10-fold less, and your life expectancy will probably skyrocket.

Open Source Software Safe?

Posted by hawkers89@reddit | sysadmin | View on Reddit | 73 comments

Killbot6@reddit

All open source software are not the same. On average, I would say they have a better shot at being safer than closed source. If it actively being updated, and the patches make sense, then I see no reason to not consider it as an option. BUT, with open source projects, you can find a lot of ghost ships. IE: they're finished with it, and they are not receiving patches... In this case, I would not install this in an enterprise environment. Just from going off context clues, it sounds like he is recommending Proxmox as one of the software you should try. This hypervisor is very active with patching, and is actually held in high regard as it using Debian and KVM (which are both being actively updated and patched as well.) Proxmox also has premium support, so that's cool It could save you a lot of money in your environment. But I would look very closely at what exactly you are using from the VMWARE stack, as it has come things that Proxmox doesn't have; and could bite you in the butt later.

I use it as a script writing assistant. I'll build out a frame work for something I want to automate, do the basic boilerplate stuff and get it's opinion on how it should be done, and edit it down from there. (Powershell and Python) I also like to use for troubleshooting things when I'm out of ideas.

Killbot6@reddit

You should inform them that the only other alternative is some version of linux, or to convert everyone to MacOS. One will be crazy expensive, as you'll need to all new hardware. The other would be cheap upfront, but will be a massive paradime shift for everyone involved and would cost a fortune in man hours to support.

Quantum computing is only used in very specific applications for very specific calculations. It's not to the point where it can be used to crack encryption, at least not publicly.

What was the lowest skill Sysadmin you ever worked with like?

Killbot6@reddit

Notes say what was done, not how it was done. (They weren't that detailed) Also, I did all that. Researched, Google the entire nine yards. But this was a system built by them, and needed very specific things done to make it work. You're being quite pompous since you have no idea of the finite details of the situation. Also, as for who trained the Sr.Admin, the owner did as he built the damn thing. Which I asked the owner for assistance too. In the few answers I could get from him while he was actually in the office, he just told me to ask the Sr.Admin and my manager. Which once again, would never give me training.

What was the lowest skill Sysadmin you ever worked with like?

Posted by SeriouslySally36@reddit | sysadmin | View on Reddit | 815 comments

Killbot6@reddit

Honestly this\^ I had a job at small MSP where I recieved almost no training on their processes, and kept finding their most serior tech finishing my work. Managment would get mad at me, when things went wrong.. I kept saying "I had no training, and people keep completing those parts of the ticket without showing me the process. Please give me training." I would even go to her, and request that she show me the processes and she would out right say she had no idea what I was talking about. (I COULD LITERALLY SEE HER WORK IN THE TICKETS) Management never cared, and eventually I was fired. It's a wonder why they wanted another IT person to begin with, they should of hired a mind reader. Long story short, It's both people at fault.
