Yeah this was my thought too. Like look I’m sure probably the dude is some low level tech but just based on that request I think it’s a bit harsh to judge. Although I suppose too it depends on what the exact error was OP was reporting too.

How are you managing laptop procurement & retrieval for a growing remote team?

Setting up is not so bad it’s almost the same as if someone is in the office just after done there is a shipping time period. I’ve made very clear gone are the days of zero day notice especially if it has to be shipped, so if they don’t give proper heads up then the person might be without computer for a few days. Getting them back I’ve pushed off as a HR / Management issue part of the termination procedure is to get the equipment back. I never contact the terminated employee just ask HR / the manager a few times about the equipment and if it doesn’t come back report it stolen to the asset team and I’m done with it. As far as tracking who has what that’s not really any different for remote than it is for in office employees.

Children now take their school iPads home. How do you filter and restrict internet access off-campus?

AI Skeptic. Literally never have gotten a useful/helpful response from AI. Help me 'Get it'

I'm like you I am a bit late to the AI game, but I have started using it some and in a few cases have started to find value. A couple examples. It's helped me save some time by extracting information I had a long block of SQL code that I had written many years ago that had around 26 account codes in select clauses. I needed these in a plain list one per line so I could do a lookup... The old way would just be go thru the list and copy / paste them out. Instead, I pasted it into AI and ask for the extracted list and it worked. Another example I was making a list in Excel with some custom date ranges in the rows, Excel was not smart enough to do the auto fill pattern thing since it wasn't normal date formats. Rather than manually do it. I pasted the first 3 lines in AI and asked foe it to continue the pattern for 26 mote weeks. It did. I've found it very helpful helping with a few tricky Dax and excel formula situations. With the Dax code it wasn't totally correct and didn't get exactly what I wanted but it gave me enough of a pattern/ different way of looking at it that I was able to rework and fix something I had tried for like 2 hours to do, in like 15 minutes after seeing the AI's idea.

Are IT certifications still worth it if you're already mid-career?

I hate the begging for updates / responses thing. I'm always super responsive when people ask stuff of me, so having to write someone multiple requests for follow-up is so annoying. Our company use to have a lot more resposnive people but sadly like a rot the non-responsiveness and not caring as spread. So usually ever few days I start my day going thru a checklist writing for 2nd and 3rd request responses to keep things moving.

JazzlikeSurround6612@reddit

Sadly that's how it is. All the smooth brain MBA C-level types creaming themselves over AI but they don't care to hear if you don't have the proper data sets, environment, resources etc to implement it, or actual use cases that may have a payback.

I only want to be sold to if I contact you in advance and inquire about your product. Then I don't want marketing BS and tricky pricing. I want real example pricing and hard data / practical use cases etc.

If you require a 4 year degree regardless of experience... You are the problem

JazzlikeSurround6612@reddit

Congrats. Sadly, it's needed. With all the automation and filters now in hiring, you know damn well most without that degree checkmark won't even be looked at unless you have some type of direct referal.

Yep, this. It's why I finally went back to school and finished my degree, like 20 years into the profession. It was clown like easy and really didn't learn anything new but got a shinny paper and a box I can check for HR filters.

Honestly, I'd probably like the protections you have. But the flip side of that is higher unemployment and companies more reluctant to hire cause they know they can't fire quickly.
