If I was trying to avoid cloud calls and had the funds, that seems like a pretty reasonable setup cost really. I use local models with $900 in upgrades to a decent gifted GPU and I can't imagine trying to do anything serious with it yet. Sounds like a sweet setup.

I think this is what has been lost in the modern world. I see no reason they shouldn't open up proprietary models after a few years. Once its not cutting edge anymore, it just seems like a waste to vault it.

The only thing I miss about Windows is the compatibility of niche programs I struggle to get to work. Kindle Create and Starcraft namely. All attempts to get them working on Ubuntu have failed.

I am somewhat conflicted about whether AI-powered matching services would be beneficial or not. It seems an elegant solution to bypassing the performative and dishonest nature of profiles, and the bland meaningless keywords of algorithms. Hell, I would dig a social network that recommended groups based on actual compatibility assessments. But in the real world, shareholders would turn it dystopian, and its too easy to convince a LLM that you have godlike powers.

Wonderful story. I spent 30 years learning "hello world" and "use strict," so in comparison its a pretty decent increase to have a workable script in a few hours of effort.

I think that frustration and appreciation are compatible emotions. Accessibility is a problem, but yeah blame and vitriol doesn't help. I think a big issue is that documentation, when it exists, is written for technical users with gaps that seem obvious. We have a magical new technology that could solve this, but some many programmer-inclined spaces are reacting to it with hostility. I've dabbled with linux my whole life, but it was only about this last year when said, unnamed technology allowed me to workaround these obstacles.
