There are no empty double seats left on the bus. How do you choose who to sit next to?

HammerToFall50@reddit

I saw a funny video once, for the other way around.. you don’t want anyone sat next to you. As people were getting on he made eye contact with everyone and patted the seat next to him! Not a single person sat next to him 🤣🤣 I thought it was genius 🤣

When I was about 12, I was on holiday in Rhyl, in a chippy on the front a bloke staggered in bleeding and had been stabbed. That’s my memory of Rhyl. Keep your cans and beach 🤣

People with partners who snore, how the hell do you survive?

My dad passed away and I went on holiday with my mum. Agreed to share a room with 2 singles… NEVER AGAIN. Snoring was exactly how you describe it. I used my AirPods, played music and had noise cancelling in. Kept falling out though. Lovely holiday but worse week ever 🤣

Why has UK phone signal got so bad?

Posted by Therevivedigbick@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 284 comments

HammerToFall50@reddit

The sarcastic answer is, because we’re in the uk and not a single thing works. The country is broken. Our mobile phone networks are shocking like literally shocking because of the huwawae situation. But. It’s mainly because we used to have a pretty steady 4g, which has not been expanded or built on. But more and more mobile phones and connections to it are occurring. Also even though it was slow 3G used to be the backup which everyone could get pretty much anywhere. So while you couldn’t get streaming really on 3G, a message would still send, you’d still receive your emails, you could still check Facebook and do basic things. Now you’re just in a black hole. To add to this, when you go to other countries, you find that you have super fast 5g where ever you go, it’s because the govt owns the infrastructure which is rented off the networks. They build the masts where they see fit. Whereas here in the uk we have different masts in different places owned by the different networks. And they can’t just build the masts anywhere suitable. They need planning permission which needs back handlers from councils etc. As an example, we needed a mast in the place I live. Not remote but just not good coverage. It was the same for most networks. Il be honest here I dug in for so long I found out that EE wanted to build a mast in a certain place on the football club car park. The football club were happy to have it there, presumably they charge a rent of some sort. But guess what - it kept getting rejected by Debbie and her microwave conspiracies, or Paul who thinks it looks like an eyesore.. You get my drift. Anyway it took 4.5 years.. and now we get 4 bars of 4g 🤣🤣🤣

Fuel cut off switch

It sounds silly but I was half joking to myself, but now I’m thinking the idea could be real. What about this for a design.. A bit like shutting down a computer. You flick the switch then it pops up on both screens “you are about to shut down engine one, would you like to continue?” And both pilots have to hit the Y key.. 🤪🤪

Which is why - as soon as one of them is switched in flight both pilots would get master caution lights and noises and their EICAS (Engine Instrument Crew Alerting System) would start to light up like Christmas tree when all the systems start shutting down. That could explain the 10 second delay in turning them to run.

Ex-smokers. How long did it take for cigarettes to disgust you?

Posted by champion1995@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 337 comments

HammerToFall50@reddit

I genuinely am not a smoker. Haven’t officially smoked for 20 years. However im partial to the odd ciggie when I go out drinking. So I probably have about 4/5 a year. I still like the smell, still like the feeling but just don’t have any urge to actually do it anymore. Unless I’m 6/7 pints in which is a rarity then I just fancy one.

If another lockdown was announced tomorrow, how much would it turn your life upside down?

HammerToFall50@reddit

Yes I’m self employed and would have to stop work. The last one crippled me as I’d only just started out so didn’t get much of any help from the government. I’m just getting to the point where I’ve got about a month of emergency funds. But if it happened again, I’d be bankrupt and on universal credit pretty quickly.

Are you for or against the Assisted Dying Bill? And have you ever watched a loved one die from a terminal diagnosis?

HammerToFall50@reddit

I’m very controversial here, but my view is really simple. It’s your life and it’s got absolutely nothing to do with any other person on the planet what you do with your life. So if you want to end it, go ahead. If you don’t. Perfect. We have animals put down, and we all think it’s “the best thing” but weirdly with humans we want them to suffer on for as long as possible. The only term I have is that it must be your decision. So if you get diagnosed with a degenerative disease, make your views legally known. A bit like a DNR.

Why are people so reluctant to phone in sick?

Posted by so1ar97@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 985 comments

HammerToFall50@reddit

Because most companies in their inductions say, in a really lovely way “ohh we don’t want you here if you are sick, please phone in. Your wellbeing is most important to us” etc. but what they don’t tell you at that induction is that they also have an attendance policy (I know you need something) which is very strict, and often doesn’t make sense. For example 3 periods of absence in 12 months will generate a meeting, which could lead to disciplinary action. I used to work for an airline many years ago, and sat in some horrific attendance meetings where the managers would just disregard the reasons and go down the disciplinary route anyway. The worst example I saw was a cold (bearing in mind that they tell you in the induction not to come in as you could burst your eardrums), then an accidental broken leg (of course you can’t fly) and then (some months later a cancer scare which turned out to be negative). They actually wanted to go down a disciplinary route for poor attendance, as a union rep we took it much higher and it got dropped. I know this is just one example but most companies have something stupid like this, and unfortunately they don’t let managers actually use common sense anymore.

UK Drivers, who has priority here?

Posted by kristianroberts@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 351 comments

HammerToFall50@reddit

I would go with red. The stop is a mandatory stop, in place because of the difficulty of view. You should always come to a complete stop 🛑 and ensure the road you are emerging into is totally clear. The stop sign does not over ride the priority of the road. Green is crossing red. Green should give priority to red. . If red decided not to go because they couldn’t see, then green could go. Priority is always given, and “right of way” doesn’t exist in this context. 🤷‍♂️

Is it ok to use disabled toilets if you're not disabled?

HammerToFall50@reddit

My disability is that I genuinely can’t go to the toilet with others in the room. It’s not a certifiable illness, but it definitely warrants using the disabled toilet. I’m ok with number 1’s but not a number 2. I’ve made myself ill because I just can’t go. 🤣

How do you deal with grief when you don’t believe in an after life?

Posted by Shadow-sight@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 307 comments

HammerToFall50@reddit

Hey I can totally sympathise with you. I’m very scientific and don’t believe in any afterlife or god. You’re not by yourself. I have lost lots of close family members all quite quickly and unexpected like heart attacks. I’m ok now, and I miss these people whole heartedly but i just accepted (over time) that life, and death is totally natural. It’s my only way to rationalise it. So I see the death like any other death, from a fly, to a dog, to a human - we’re all the same we just “stop working”. The only peace I get is that they don’t feel any pain, they just don’t exist anymore. I constantly laugh with my sister and mum about my dad (we all have quite dark humours) and it’s the only way we can deal with it. Time will heal your grief but trust me, you are not alone in how you think. ☺️

I like the pizza if that’s the style of pizza I want to go for. But it’s an absolute rip off. If I just want a pizza it’s way over priced. Sometimes I don’t want sides etc. or 2 pizzas.

Have you ever had an awkward minute of silence on Remembrance Sunday?

Posted by yourcatsbff@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 640 comments

HammerToFall50@reddit

Yes I’m a driving instructor, and asked my 17yr old learner if she wanted to pull in at 11, and pause for the 2 minutes silence. We did pull in, had the radio on listening out for it. We pulled in about 5 mins before she pulled her phone out, and just sat on social media and on her phone through the whole thing. Was bizarre.

Why are 20 minute cities seen as a conspiracy theory?

Posted by AstoundedMagician@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 1416 comments

HammerToFall50@reddit

I would say the concept itself is great. Take us back to the old days. I would love my high street to have a butchers greengrocers, a corner shop where I can get everything from at a reasonable price. Encourage me to get off my backside and just walk to the shops. With a doctor just down the road. The issue came about because rather than Change a town slowly and naturally encourage people to do the right thing, it appeared to be being forced upon us. Suddenly having to drive 3 miles around a town because someone put some plant pots in the middle of the road. Then their was the issue of control, ie the idea was that you could only drive out of your area a limited amount of times and ANPR cameras would be watching you and finning you if you broke these rules. I’m not sure if these are true but that’s where I believe the conspiracy came from. That it was just about controlling people and issuing fines etc.

The only reason for this (ex crew) dependent on the airline and policy is that they may only let say 40 trolley bags in the cabin. So if that’s all the luggage you have and you want it with you it’s better to get on as soon as possible. If you get on last your luggage is going in the hold 🤣
