Is it weird for my employer to ask me to make a direct line to our IT team for guests?

Posted by Bright-Ad4963@reddit | sysadmin | View on Reddit | 223 comments

Without making it seem to harsh and that your IT staff are socially inept, I would emphasize that not all quality IT people are the best at dealing directly with the customer all the time. They would either need some specialized training or leave this to "the pros" (ie. Guest services staff). The way that some of my staff respond to tickets of employees is completely different from how I would want them responding to our clients. Thankfully the latter is very rare.

What is your response time to guest issues? A guest calls the front desk who tells them they'll send someone up essentially and you get there to see a DND sign on the door and you're supposed to leave a card with contact info? Why can't the card just say "Sorry we missed you, please contact the front desk again when you are available. Thanks for staying with us. -Hotel IT"? Does your ticketing system have rooms as assets whereby you can track issues related to specific rooms? Could you give your guest services some kind of account in the ticketing system to be able to provide updates to tickets instead of having to call you?

Simple answer. Yes. Aside from a handful.of countries we block most with allowances for exceptions, but there are those that are complete no-go, China being one of them.

How do you guys handle OneDrive files when an employee leaves?

Posted by BoomSchtik@reddit | sysadmin | View on Reddit | 164 comments

Golden_Dog_Dad@reddit

We don't the OneDrive goes into its typical dormant state for 30 days. If someone suspects something might have been in there later we have it in backups.

Explain to me like I’m 5, why this is a bad idea…

Posted by standard_user937@reddit | sysadmin | View on Reddit | 269 comments

Golden_Dog_Dad@reddit

Exactly. My boss literally yesterday said that he didn't consider contracting work to a third party the same as contracting work to another affiliate who is branded the same, but is a separate legal entity. He's also said that those who have CPA designations (I work in the professional services industry) should inherently be trusted because they wouldn't do anything to jeopardize their CPA membership. There is no legal team here. We have a lawyer, but the only contact I've had with him is when the partners need something for a legal dispute we are involved in.

Yeah we started a couple of years ago now and next year I believe will be our last refresh before we are fully onto W11. If course then the next version will get released and we'll be doing it all over again shortly after that, but you know...that's life in IT.

User Gets Locked Out 20+ Times Per Day

I've seen this twice in my career. One was a user with a laptop infected with malware. The other was an account that was used as a service somewhere and the password for the account had been changed, but the service was not configured to use the new password.

We've been using the Tragus DV4K with two external 24 inch displays and they've been pretty consistent. We had Lenovo TB3 docks before that and they were good at first, but over time became more and more problematic.

Exactly this. We have exactly two users with Surface units in our org. They are not aware that we don't "support" them. I think they've each been taken to MS for repair at least once. I would never buy a fleet. Not unless I had about 10-15% in spares.

It’s the End of the World Because of Bitlocker

Posted by AuPo_2@reddit | sysadmin | View on Reddit | 49 comments

Golden_Dog_Dad@reddit

I can't say I've seen too many issues with Bitlocker before. Any time the Bitlocker recovery screen appears it's usually an indication of something else being wrong. This is certainly an extreme case and one in which I would have directed my staff by now to find a fix or swap the machine. Bitlocker is just one piece of the puzzle. The risk to some orgs may be greater than others, but at the same time it's pretty low hanging fruit and is a relatively stable solution.

Feeling Overwhelmed After Discovering a Security Vulnerability – What Should I Do?

Posted by Icy_Candy_3628@reddit | sysadmin | View on Reddit | 75 comments

Golden_Dog_Dad@reddit

I think you misunderstand. What I was trying to relay is that OP shouldn't just hand it off to the manager and never think about it again. Rather in the weeks after if they don't hear anything to just say, "hey. remember that problem I raised with you? was there any decision made on what to do about it?" That's called giving a shit. I didn't say they needed to stress over it.

Just the type of mentality I don't want on my team. It's the same type of mentality that walks by garbage left in the hallway at the office. I didn't put it there, not my problem.

I think the best you can do now is ensure it doesn't just get thrown in the "meh, whatever" pile. You know it's a serious problem, be a pitbull and make sure it gets resolved. Just don't go outside the chain of command unless absolutely necessary. You reported it to your superior, the onus is off you now, but ensure it gets dealt with.

Golden_Dog_Dad@reddit

We had a similar set up to this. What we tried was setting retention policies for those accounts to essentially 24 hours. We never saw it work as we ended up having a water leak that basically destroyed our meeting rooms and reception area. Now the plan is to deploy brand new MTR systems into those rooms once they are remediated and remodeled.

Have you emailed those interviewing to thank them for the discussion? You could also at the same time tell them what you've told us, that you feel bad for blanking on what should be a relatively simple question and it's been bugging you since so you went home and reminded yourself that it is.... As a hiring manager I don't expect that my people know everything about everything, but you better damn well know how to find out and come back to me with an intelligent response. If you show me that initative rather than expect me to give you the answer, I'd be more apt to consider hiring you.

Which users would not comply with a change to the password length policy in Active Directory?

Posted by jwckauman@reddit | sysadmin | View on Reddit | 35 comments

Golden_Dog_Dad@reddit

We just asked everyone to change their passwords to ensure they comply. If by a certain date you hadn't reset we would trigger then to be reset at next login. By the time we got to the date we had maybe 10% who hadn't complied. You CAN report on the last date a password was changed.

there should be a minimum computer literacy test when hiring new people.

Anyone only allowing edge? What’s your reasoning?

Posted by AgentSuckMyBalls@reddit | sysadmin | View on Reddit | 294 comments

Golden_Dog_Dad@reddit

When we went to M365 back in 2019/20 we made Edge the default. We still allow Chrome and in some cases use it because it's the only browser some of our software is "supported" on. We just make it available in the Company Portal via Intune. I would say we probably have about 80% or so using Edge. We convinced them it wasn't THAT different from Chrome and it would be more efficient for signing into apps, but we still have some holdouts who have a hard time telling us why they use Chrome without using the reason of "I just like it better".

Try it first if you can. The thing with the aeron is that it's built to restrict you to a proper sitting position. I didn't care for it because I like to sometimes sit cross-legged or tuck on leg under the other. The Aeron does not allow that really.

Edge Managed Favorites Disappeared

Posted by AgeOfEgos@reddit | sysadmin | View on Reddit | 7 comments

Golden_Dog_Dad@reddit

Having recently updated our favourites and having this happen I can tell you that this happens to me when there is a syntax mistake. Usually it's in the JSON itself, but most recently someone put in a bad url (it was missing the //: to go with HTTPS). The odd thing is that the mistake wasn't even in the URL I was changing. So it was working with the error, and then when I made my changes it stopped. I use Notepad++ with a plugin for formatting the JSON. And then I will usually use a JSON syntax checker tool online to ensure I have it correct (again that didn't catch this most recent error). Beyond that I don't know. I'd be a betting man though and say someone changed something in your gpo.
