Best office chair for long hours

Few people spend more time in a chair than we do. So, which is the best chair out there? I paid $400 (Canadian) for one, which is a lot of money for me, but it still makes me uncomfortable. I have a sit-stand desk and exercise every day to avoid back problems and other issues. However, one of the main reasons I don't pursue new certifications or side projects is that I can't sit for long periods after work. I'm even thinking about financing an Aeron or one of those Herman Miller chairs. Although I despise the idea of financing a chair, I might have to.

The best cure for back pain is deadlifts. I did the whole routine of trying to find better chairs to sit in to help with back pain but it doesn't help because it doesn't address the actual problem: a weak back. Most people's back pain goes away once they build up even a slightly stronger back. TL;DR: Best chair is to deadlift.

I'm sitting in an Aeron chair that was probably just shy of 10 years old when I took it home for COVID. I bought a set of replacement wheels for it from Amazon, so now it's on soft inline-skate-like wheels. Other than that it's in used but excellent condition.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01G643EU6/ The default wheels are hard plastic and don't roll terribly smoothly, and will cause wear marks on hardwood floors. These are a soft plastic, almost rubber-like. Roll smoother and will not mark up your floors.

I like the embody more than the aeron. It lets you lean back a bit and keeps your back in a good posture. It does have a bit or an adaption time. THe first 2-4 weeks it was uncomfortable and made my back sore. But once my body fixed it's posture it's the most comfortable chair I've ever owned.

They're very love/hate. I'm in the hate group. The fabric is rough and uncomfortable, the stretched mesh does not provide enough support, the larger sizes for tall people are literally an inch or two larger, but go wider, so really they're for fat people not tall people, and overall they're not comfortable. I gave mine to my wife and replaced it with a Secret Lab Titan, which I have since had a total of 3 of these, still have two, one at my desk and one in my homelab room.

Agreed, I am 6'0" 260 pounds, and have used the Aeron in an office for many years - they provide good support, but for big guys like us, comfort goes out the window after about 1 hour of sitting in one (or less) which I think is due to the mesh seat (last time I used one was pre-Covid). I am in Atlanta, so I am very fortunate to have lots of dealers/showrooms to go in and sit/try everything. I stumbled on the Steelcase Gesture and WHOA that thing is super comfortable! Very expensive, but it seems well worth it, given the amount of use it will get. Does anyone have this chair that can comment on long-term use?

I am trying to find alternate chairs that are as close as possible to the SC Gesture, mainly because of the price. They are $1,500 new, which is just insane for a freaking chair. No materials are worth that much, sorry - at the end of the day it's just foam, fabrics, steel, and plastics. This right here. I get that a lot of people love the Aeron. And I'm not arguing against their reasons. It's a legitimate well-made chair. But all I can say here are the reasons why I dislike them. I can't stand the mesh. I find it sorely uncomfortable as it doesn't provide me with the support that I need. Also, it's like taking a cheese grater to my clothes. Furthermore, if you should sit against any part of the plastic frame where the mesh attaches, it's absolutely is one of the worst feelings in the world for any length of time. In a world of really bad office chairs, it's excellent in comparison to 95% of everything else. Sadly, I just haven't found one that is excellent for me. There aren't any showrooms for these expensive office chairs anywhere near me, and blindly rolling the dice on a multi-hundred dollar chair might be an affordable risk for others, but not for me.

Boonies of PA. It's like 3.5 hours to the nearest Costco. Same with Trader Joes. And Ikea. Plenty of local shops and stuff, and all the local office furniture suppliers are pretty much distributors in a tiny office, most without a showroom. Or it's a showroom that's pretty much a partial warehouse for their ongoing sales. And they look at a one-off sale like me with disdain....not even worth their time. I should know, I've checked with them. Short of getting lucky finding someone who happens to have one that might work for me (in the right style, right size, right accessory loadout).....then getting lucky to find a copy of that exact one elsewhere without breaking the bank (sure, I know there's SOMEONE who can sell me one -- money does solve all problems)......I just make do with what I have.

I found a solution to it though! At least for the Titan. If you rotate the base of the chair (the star feet thing) in the direction of the rotation it should stop. Usually takes a few rotations to make it work. I rotate it 1/5th of the way each attempt.

Just an observation: Aerons come in three sizes. A, B and C. (Because small, medium and large are for plebeians apparently) I can't sit in a small, and a medium hurts because it cuts into the back of my legs, but the large is just right. Everybody is different. If the Aeron is a bad fit for you then it's the wrong product for you. But it's possible your experience may have been with the wrong size chair...

Dont get Aerons. If you spend some time looking at reviews - people either love them or hate them, it's a hit or miss. It's not worth spending so much money only to get something that wont work. If you can get a second- hand Herman Miller, that might work out, I've heard only good things about it.... except that it's so darn EXPENSIVE. I can give only you an affordable recommendation: SIHOO M57 Office Chair. The m57 is such a blessing for long hours - comfy, all mesh and adjustable head/arm rests. I wouldnt recommend it if you're a particularly large person though, you can see the M18 instead which will particularly cater to you.

I like the flexibility of choice. But I hate, *hate* sit stand desks. It's too much work to bring them up or down. What I've found it the best is just a tall feking desk and a tall chair. Something that slipping out of the chair and standing doesn't take you off of your work. In my time at my current job every coworker has tried the whole sit stand thing but every one of the desks has ended up in a single, sitting position because they just don't like moving between them. My desk/workbench is just so easy/simple that I spend half my day standing without even realizing it. It also means when you have a larger space you can use it all without sitting and without bending over. One downside is if you don't go chair shopping before deciding on a height you might end up with very little choice on the kind of chair you can get(like I did when I built my desk at home way back when).

You should look into the You chair from Allseating. Many of our customers complain about the Aeron chair hurting their thighs because the seat curves or that they can't adjust the seat depth. The You Chair from Allseating is made in Canada with a 12 year warranty and you have lots of choices for the mesh and textiles for the seat. Also different arm options. They have a more price conscious called the You Too which is about $700 and you don't lose any of the comfort. The truth is that you need to try chairs for yourself instead of reading reviews.

Agree, I had one for home use and I liked it so much I got a second one for my office. Very comfortable and great build quality. Pretty much fixed all my back pain issues. I’ve had some cracking of the leather in the arm rests after a few years but nothing major. Those are replaceable if it ever gets noticeable. Just buy one of the more subtle designs that doesn’t scream “gamer chair!” for the office one. Or go all in on it, I won’t judge.

You're right. Last month, I visited Staples, an office supply store, and tried out a few chairs. I ended up buying the most comfortable one for me - the Hyken. It was only about $169, which was very affordable and suits me perfectly. Personally, I'm not a fan of the expensive $600-$1000 Herman Miller chairs, but I know some people love them, maybe because they've used them for a while or they trust the brand. IMO the best chair is the one that fits you well, regardless of the model or brand.

You're looking at the used market for that price range. Keep an eye out for FB Marketplace, or larger refurbishers. Sometimes you can find smaller office furniture suppliers that have chairs returned from leasing. In the past, when the MSRP was significantly lower, you could usually find a wholesale distributer to agree to sell one chair at wholesale pricing. It was just over a grand getting mine a few years ago.

Up-front cost can definitely cause sticker shock, but that's about $1 per hour for an average 40-hour worker if using for only 1 year. Dozens of comments here talking about buying used chairs that still hold up after many years. And sysadmin type workers probably sitting in chairs more than the average worker. So it's just a trade off: cheap + back pain, or expensive + comfort. And long-term, back pain is NOT cheap. Sure a $99 chair from staples works, but it'll be uncomfortable (possibly even increasing back pain) rather fast. Alternatively a (reputable) $2k chair, with much better warranty, will stay comfortable for many years. Getting 5-10 years out of a chair you spend 8 hours a day in is pretty much equivalent of buying a $2k mattress that'll be slept-in about the same amount. Obviously cheaper options, but people regularly spend that much on a bed, not a chair, when they provided similar function (comfort between user and ground).

Herman Miller chairs last forever, and it will likely last much longer than 12 years. Hell there's Aeron's from the 90s still in use that just need a new part every couple of years. 3. Good posture pays dividends. How much is being back-pain free worth it to you? imo if you spend 1/3~ of your day sitting, $2000 is pennies for how much time you'll spend in the chair.

I think I'm very well qualified to answer this since I've researched the eff out of this and still ended up feeling disappointed. LOL! It started off just before pandemic when one of my satellite office had an Aeron. The feeling was surreal and couldn't believe something so comfortable yet so industrial could exist. After finding about the cost, I just laughed it off. Come pandemic and everyone cooped up at home, the stress of poor sitting started to show up. Researched extensively esp. on BTOD.com(check out their Youtube) and I was fully convinced that the Aeron is the one. Went to the first store that opened and bought the Aeron. I can tell you the remastered was a PAIN. I was fully convinced after 6 months that it was a bad choice and I had sell it off. One thing which I realized is, chairs are VERY personal and teeny tiny adjustments take a long time to get used to. Going back to the next office, found an even more local comfortable chair and decided to buy that one as well. It was very, very odd that this same chair was feeling super uncomfortable at home with 99% ideal setup as office. The BIGGEST reason is, the chairs used to be fixed on the carpet at home and it wouldn't move. So, your body also becomes rigid. Bought an Ikea floor protector and this has completely changed how the chairs feel. I would suggest try all the cheap fixes first before you invest in the expensive one(it is worth it, though!)

A cushion with an indentation at the back of it that lets your spine stretch out instead of compressing it makes all the difference. Been using the $20 version of this for years, one in the car also. As someone who was already a home body and went full WFH 4.5 years ago I can say the best chair is to not sit in the chair. My desk pretty much where I spend most of my day. It's my work computer, home computer, gaming space, movie watching space, etc. We don't have a couch and living room TV at present. Over the years as my posture or body started to ache more I finally started to do something about it. While Aeron, Embody, and a few other are the go to chairs for productivity - they're not great for reclining back with my feet up; full headrest style. As such, I actually alternate: 1) Full sitting, Secret Labs Titan gaming chair. It has upgraded lumbar pillow, upgraded arm rests with gel/memory foam vs the plastic ones which are quite typical for this style of chair, etc. I have fallen asleep in it. 2) Active sitting, I recently bought a ball chair, it's an exercise ball that sits in a farm with casters on it so it can move around like a chair. It's properly sized for my height as well (I didn't just buy one on a whim) 3) Standing. I also splurged a few years ago on a new desk, an uplift sit/stand desk to be precise. It came with a bunch of free addons, one of which was a big anti fatigue mat. So I grab that and stand while I work for a few hours. A mixture of that, plus trying to remember to move around every now and then and actually do a few stretches does appear to be helping. Now, I'm still pretty lazy overall so this is not a fitness improvement plan, but a good sitting plan for IT/gaming folk :)

I have one too, it's more a "premium" gaming chair. Honestly it's very good, when you first sit in it you will think it's "too hard" I've had a 2018 "Omega" chair for 5+ years now and the "PU leather" is falling off, the rubber on the arms is wearing too. However, it's still extremely comfortable and I've honestly used it 8h/5d a week + many hours evenings and weekends with no back issues whatsoever. It is a very comfortable chair for long hour use. When I replace it, I'll be getting the fabric instead of the pleather material because it just looks much more hard wearing. This one had some obvious wear on the seat pretty early on because I often sit cross-legged

Aerons are repairable, ["Buy It For Life"](https://reddit.com/r/BIFL) office chairs that fully deserve their reputation and their list price. They come in three sizes, but the ones bought in batches for offices are normally the medium or "B" size. Aerons are so good that I'm not convinced there's any point to competition in their segment. It's very difficult to be certain that one would be comfortable for you, but we've had offices full of "B" size and never any complaints or requests for anything different.

That reminds me: I need to call Steelcase and see if I can order some new ball-bearing rollers for an old glass-front bookcase of mine. I sat in a plastic Steelcase Leap recently, and it looked quite well designed and reasonably built for a value-line plastic desk chair. But anyone who's disassembled and fixed an Aeron knows how incredibly overdesigned and built, they are. Not flawless, but hard to exceed. And they've updated the Aerons over the years, like having the arm adjustment lock with a lever instead of the weak-point screw knob.

This will be an unpopular opinion, but it came at the advice of my body worker: a pneumatic stool w/ wheels, such as the ones from EarthLite. I recommend the one without the back. It forces me to sit properly and it allows me to work much longer with much less pain. Under $200. Height adjustable. You might see a chiropractor or a masseuse with such a stool…

Yep, I had a Leap v1 in my office at work for years and it was comfortable as hell. A few years ago I bought a Leap v2 on eBay for $370 shipped, from one of those used office furniture resellers. It didn't look used at all to me when it showed up, it was in great condition and still is. Just as comfy as the v1.

I paid $380 for a used Aeron that came to me in like-new condition. I sit in this chair all day every day and forget I'm sitting down sometimes. I wouldn't call it comfortable, but I will say that after sitting in it all day I don't notice aches or pains. I rarely even use the recline function; it just makes it really easy to sit there and get things done.

I'm too tall for the aeron (had one but got back pains), swapped into a secret labs titan (I know, I'm not a fan of the look) but it has fantastic support for tall people with long legs and broad shoulders. At the end of the day ergonomics is very individual and you should look around and try some out before you commit to an expensive purchase. I'f you're more of a medium build then I'm sure the H&M lives up to it's reputation. It was the best chair I've been in that was too small for me 😅 And my brother loved it when I passed it on to him.

I have an Amia that I use remotely for 8 hours a day and it’s been great. I’m really tall at 6’6” and it fits me well. You can get used quality chairs from office liquidators online and also locally. If you look at Madison Seating, but through their eBay store so that you have a better return policy if you don’t want it. I was able to take a chair from my office when I went fully remote so ask facilities if it’s possible for you as well. 99% of the time, Facilities and IT work well together.

Herman Miller Aeron's are good if you can find one used for a good price. I like the Herman Miller Embody more, but there's less in use so no good deals on used ones. A new one is about $2000 CAD on sale. There's a few other good ergo office chair brands, most will run you $1000-2000. I don't mind the price tag on the herman millers because they have a 12 year warranty and have a proven track record of durability, so the per year cost works out to be much less than cheaper office chairs.

La-Z-Boy rocking recliner. Maddox and Dorian (or Neo Power if you're flush) models have nice wide flat "track" armrests for sitting a laptop. The latter two have power adjustable headrest and lumbar support. Avoid leather coverings if you're prone to "back" sweat like I am. Also the tempur memory foam cushion is definitely worth the upgrade.

The best ones are herman Miller, steel case and human scale. All pricey but sometimes can be gotten slightly used on a marketplace or liquidator. I personally do not like the Aeron because of the hard plastic edges of the seat pan. The embody is mostly great but for some reason herman Miller decided not to have full controls for seatpan position and can't move the armrests.

Try it first if you can. The thing with the aeron is that it's built to restrict you to a proper sitting position. I didn't care for it because I like to sometimes sit cross-legged or tuck on leg under the other. The Aeron does not allow that really.

Although I will say--the standard chair they give us at my current job is the [Haworth Fern](https://store.haworth.com/products/fern-office-chair), which I also find is excellent. Unfortunately, like a Herman Miller, it's not cheap.

I had a cheapo chair that I got at the beginning of COVID WFH and it made my back hurt for years before I replaced it with a Secretlab Titan. Back pain GONE. Lumbar support on this chair is impressive on its own, but the added lumbar support pillow takes it to another level. It's extremely adjustable and very sturdy, and it supports my 265lbs easily. It was a bit pricey but it comes with a 5 year warranty. I'm sure you could find a used one on OfferUp or eBay for a lot less than new.
