UK vets: why are there so few independent veterinary practices left in the UK?

Go2Matt@reddit

Doesn't always work that though. Buys dog on monday. Gets hit by car on wed. Owner needs to find £4k immediately. My point about the CT scans was, Your avg dog owner would not be paying £2k for a scan to see what might be wrong with the animal. This would result in the Vet having an educated guess and treating the most likely cause. However having insurance means the cost of that scan is now paid for by everyone else. We've always had insurance for our dogs. If they've needed emergency treatment the words you hear us say are, "He's insured, so do whatever is necessary"

Some may increase prices some don't. One of the positives of the corporate owned sites is in the training and equipment and back up. What has hurt the industry the most in my opinion is the insurance industry... there's no way a CT scan would cost £2k.. if Joe bloggs had to pay.. they just wouldnt have it done. The question is did the price cause the insurance or did insurance cause the price

What to do with empty cups in a café?

Posted by SnapFirefly@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 26 comments

Go2Matt@reddit

I've owned a few cafe's. The staff should be giving the table a wipe down between customers so leaving your cups etc isn't an issue. If I'm having a pint in a pub I always take back. But cafe's etc I leave unless its really quiet and there is an obvious place to return them too.. One of my sites had no space so any dirties went straight to the cleaning station that customers couldn't access so leaving them on the table was preference..

For those of you who didn't do their homework at School, how did it affect you?

Posted by Simply_az@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 419 comments

I very rarely did homework, I was on report for pretty much all of school tool. I still dont agree with homework. If they wants kids to do an hour extra a night, Keep them in school an extra hour, at least they can get help if they need it. When you leave school and get a job 90% of the time the work finishes when you clock off and go home, I dont see why we put kids under the extra stress. Some kids dont have the homelife that they can get help with homework so then get punished at school. Having said that, If I knew how hard adult life was I would have tried harder at school. I've told my kids/Nieces,Nephews. The harder you work for a few years at school the less hard you have to work for the rest of your life!! But, I'd say I'm reasonably successful, Several businesses and in excess of 50 workers... Had i had some qualifications I may be in a better position, But it was my work ethic and my ability to deliver that has helped me more

Tips to help keep a car warm when heaters don’t work?

Posted by theslowrunningexpert@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 84 comments

Go2Matt@reddit

Thermometer?? You may mean thermostat. They are buttons.. But you can usually just remove it and it'll still work. The thermostat is closed when the engine is closed until the circulating water is up to temp(its trying to warm the engine up as quick as poss) then it opens and allows water to flow through the heater matrix (thats what makes your heater work) Its usually fairly easy to remove and will sort you issue until you can afford to replace it... But they really are cheap

What's your cheap purchase that actually costs you a small fortune?

Has anyone ever asked for Angela?

Because our training was to remove the person asking for Angela to a safe place first, Then deal with the other person. The important part was to make sure the vulnerable person was safe over everything else. The examples we are seeing being posted are a woman and a man. What about a group of men but only one is harassing a woman, If you remove the one man but leave behind the girl and all his mates is that likely to deescalate the situation as they've just watched their mate being removed If the example your talking about was handled that way then thats how they dealt with it, But we would have handled it differently, because of our ongoing training. Same way as getting people away from a fire before tackling the fire is more important.

The idea is to remove the vulnerable person without drama, Then deal with the issue. Imagine a woman at a bar being harassed then the guy getting kicked out. He can just wait outside for her. However if she is removed BEFORE he is (probably as he's expecting her to come back) then the situation can be safer for the vulnerable person.

Yeah, Part of the reason is its an industry with high turnover. In our area it was part of your Licence that you were a member of Pubwatch, But it didn't go far enough. Sites joined but then never went to the meetings or attended the courses that were on offer. But some being trained is better than non. Someone vulnerable could walk in off the street to any of the Bars involved in our town and they would be taken to a safe area without question straight away...

The idea is you ask for Angela and YOU get moved to a safe area. Not Hey I'm being harrassed and then have to be witness to what happens next. You say to a bartender, Hey I'm being harrased the bartender is going to ask who, where how. You ask for Angela the idea is you then get taken out of the situation and given time to calm down, Explain the situation in a calm and safe environment. Rather than having to be there when your "date" gets dragged out. I'm amazed people cant see that.. Although could be explained by Male privilege

Also dont forget that the Bar areas in pubs and clubs can be very noisy. Asking for Angela is a very quick way to get a point across.

More and more pubwatch groups are getting on board with Ask for Angela, Banned from one banned from all etc. It might feel unnatural but i would guess 99.% of all bar staff would want to help...If they know about it. Our Local BID team are heavily involved with the local pubwatch group. So it might be worth looking at the pubwatch scheme on facebook. Or if your local council has a website they really should be promoting this. We had a training session last year and it was very insightful and despite being in the trade for 20 odd years there was still much to be learned. One thing that was brought home and everyone should be aware of is that no-one leaves home for a night out wants to be left alone, Lost or asking for help. And YOU can be the difference between them making it home or not..

We have a fairly large house and I like having it comfortable. But that comfort costs about £1200 per month across Gas and Electricity. 2 Boilers + Electric UFH. People say put a jumper on. I'm like I'm at home I want to be comfortable. We stayed at the Brother in Laws a month or so back and he is wearing thermals under his pants and a big hoody. Then moans that the toddler doesn't like bath time........Cause they dont its frickin baltic in your house.....

Is it strange to consider wearing a mask again?

Posted by ohnoitsbobbyflay@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 690 comments

To much tin foil hat bad publicity. They use half truths for their agenda. Surgical masks that have on the box that they offer no protection against XXXX for instance. Whilst that is true. You wear a mask to help protect others, It'll do very little to protect the wearer. Plus the data shows they dont do much, Because people wearing them move them around, Take them off, Even wear them to protect their Chins. Same reason we cover our mouths when we cough!!!!!

Whatever happened to that “don’t pay” energy movement. Did anyone actually do it?

I have a take away in a seaside town, We have our own app which gets the best offers and there is also a "Insert town name" Eats App, Most if not all the towns takeaways are on the Eats app, But as its also a tourist town that wont know about both those apps we also have JE and Deliveroo. I spend a fair amount of time working away in different parts of the country and JE/ Deliveroo are the go to apps for that reason. However in our case, We still use our own drivers to deliver, Wouldn't trust JE/DR to deliver them for us

I've been an employer ever since... The notice period is a difficult one, Most industries have an similar notice period, So if John gives 1 months notice, The company will then have to recruit again, Possibly with someone that also has to give 1 months notice leading to a time when the company is down a man, Judging by your attitude though you'll never see this from any other way than screw the company

It was in response to the company doesn't give a toss about you comment. They do, They just MUST continue service! Youve also misquoted what is said. *"I've not known any business that has fired a member of staff just because a better member of staff came along that suited the role better"* *You said* "However, plenty of businesses DO get rid of people who are bad at their job and look for someone else." Can you see how those are different scenarios? No issues with finding a better job and moving on, But there are so many posts on here about notice periods and only give them the minimum notice period, And so much hate towards an employer. Businesses dont want to lose staff (unless they are particularly poor) Recruitment is a pain. I've just had a driver tender his resignation, Hes been with us for about 5 years, Decent worker and doesn't create any issues, But Night work no longer suits his family commitments. He only needs to give us a weeks notice but said he'll crack on until the new year if we need him to but will be happy to leave earlier if we find someone suitable that he can train up. If he ever wants a job in the future I'll have him back in a heartbeat. My last change of job was back in 2001 so its been a while, Maybe their are companies out there that would rather not have any staff...... Can't think of any.... Maybe Amazon warehouses

Charity shop workers, how do feel and deal with resellers who buy and sell for profit?

Posted by Ckbaggins@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 97 comments

Go2Matt@reddit

Your right. In a way. The shops sell to make the Charities money to do good. The shops aren't really there to sell things to people that want/need cheap stuff. If they were then they would be more heavily discounted. So imagine opening up a charity shop with £100k worth of stock and someone comes in and buys it all. Thats 100k in the Charities pocket.
