Did a 72 hour shift straight, no sleep/naps. Company ordered food delivery, we ate at our desks. The all was, we need 'round the clock effort on this till complete. This was Monday morning, due date was Thursday morning. No one thought it would take THIS much time. I was worried it would, and might not actually be doable. I was the only one that could handle the full Monday at 8:00 am till early hours Thursday stretch. It was somewhat rewarding to call the owner, and wake him up to say "It's done. I'm going home, have a good day, and a good weekend, I'm not coming in tomorrow." I was much younger then, and have done other all-nighters since, but nothing like that.

I hate bitter flavors, and have never been able to tolerate coffee, but I was drinking Mt. Dew by the 2 litters by my later years of high school. Then I found Sky Rocket which lined up nicely with the college years, I don't drink or smoke, I'd bring a shot glass and my Sky Rocket to parties and do shots with people. It was 100mg of caffeine per oz. Then after Belgian declared Sky Rocket a narcotic, it became hard to find, until the product was cancelled. I then found Penguin caffeinated mints from ThinkGeek and popped those pretty regularly. Then I found Monster. At my worst, I was drinking three tall cans a day. Nowadays, Monster's a very rare thing, and only a regular size can, but I do still add a caffeinated, Cherry flavored, water enhancer to my 36 oz Yeti and drink and finish two+ a day.

How do you deal with users who refuse to lock their laptop when walking away?

Posted by heartgoldt20@reddit | sysadmin | View on Reddit | 950 comments

EvilRSA@reddit

Haven't had to use them in a while.... Does the hotkeys for screen rotation still work? It's something you can do walking by, like a drive-by reminder to lock your computer. Ctrl + Alt + Left/Right Arrow: Rotate 90 degrees Ctrl + Alt + Down Arrow: Upside-down

I need some guidance... depressed

Download a server iso, Microsoft has downloads of full server in trail license right on their website, Linux flavors same concept, just Google. If you're running Windows, enable Hyper-V or download whichever hypervisor you want to learn, and start setting up a server. Think of something simple that you want to do that you haven't done from scratch yet, and do it. Google when you get stuck and just know that, it's not production, so the ABSOLUTE worst thing that can happen is you delete the virtual guest and try again. For networking, check out GNS3.

Yeah, I listen to the soundtrack from time to time.... But when I need to buckle down and slam out some work I'll put Orbital's *HALCYON + ON + ON* on repeat. Also, it was a pretty defining movie for me too... To the point that my son's name is Dade. 🙂

I love Hackers, but it's one of those movies if you didn't see around the time it came out or when you were younger, it doesn't hit the same. 😂 I work in IT and I can embarrassingly admit I have said "Never fear, I, is here." before.

Full remote since Wednesday, March 18th, 2020. Productivity increased and about two months later the owner asked if anyone wanted to return to the office, or stay full remote. Everyone wanted remote. A month or so later and the owner asked me what it would take to move the two server racks worth of equipment from the office to the data center with everything else and if it could be done by the end of the month because there was a company that wanted to down size their physical footprint and our space would be perfect for them. I told him, "Sure, it just depends on how much of a priority you want attached to it." He said let's make it happen and that's how we went from "temporary remote with an empty office space", to "full remote without even having a space to go back to."

So I met a genie in the forest, and he granted me three wishes. My first one was for a machine that could erase anybody's memory with a bright light.

Wouldn't either of you question what the machine already there *is* or what it does? If not, and you did wish for the machine again, I think at that point you'd catch on pretty quick, and then the genie says, "okay, so I'm going to guess you only have one wish left."

Email - 1998, when I purchased my domain Phone - 2001, started out as a Nextel with the "Chirp", then Sprint acquired Nextel, then I became a beta tester for Google voice back when it was Grand Central and ported my number, so now it doesn't matter what carrier I have, I still own my number.

I think it's because the more you learn, the more you understand how everything interconnects with everything else, leading to a new realm that you now know exists a little more, but highlights how much you don't really know about it. The best way I've ever thought about it was those video games where you can only see a small part of the map and the more you explore, the more you see how things connect to other areas, but until you learn more about this new area, you don't know much about it, keeping you forever thinking about how much you don't know, when in reality, you might know a bunch, but the self doubt out weights the confidence.

We use Spanning Backup to backup everything O365 related. If your tenant is maliciously attacked, Microsoft does not back up your data in a restorable type manner. They say this all the time. They only care about providing uptime and reliability.

Thank you! I've been scrolling looking for something to chime in with "Me too" because I can't think of anything. DMA, IRQs, Modem commands to make shitty point-to-point connection with Windows 95 HyperTerminal, NT 4.0, DOS, my 386, my first CD- ROM drive that used a caddy... All of it is neat stories to share... Or to make people's eyes glaze over in a 100-yard stair like a war flashback of "oh, God, I forgot about that"
