Why do Americans go through the trouble of managing their lawns?

I watch police body camera videos where police routinely ask people for their social security number as identification. Is this commonly used in America? Do people have this memorized?

Yes we do, but not for this purpose. If they ask that it is because they are likely engaging in immigration enforcement as well. In some states/jurisdictions police are legally deputized to do this work, in others they are legally prohibited from doing so, yet we see it happen in many cases either way.

do you live in fear of being shot? or is it something you grow up being used to?

No, not really. Even though I grew up in a big city and work in a city with high rates of gun violence. However, now that I have a kid, I worry a lot about him going to school and experiencing a school shooting 💔

What’s your daily car and how many do you have?

What’s something that feels completely “normal” in American daily life to you, but you realized is actually really confusing or surprising when you explain it to people from other countries or even people from different states?

Lol my dad was a mover in the 70s and tells the story of this nice British guy who offered him and the other movers some beers after a long hot day moving, they were thankful but less than refreshed since the beers were luke warm.

Do Americans really come to a stop at every 'stop' sign?

I am surprised so many people are doing "rolling stops." I wonder where they live. If I did this driving in NJ or NY I imagine I would hurt myself or someone else pretty quickly.

Not just teenagers here, adults do too. Mostly Spanish words mixed in here or there (mañana, besos, chica, mi amor) but also sometimes French or Italian words (ma cherie, moi; ciao, pronto), or Arabic (inshallah). I'm sure other languages come up too in places with big communities that speak them.

How common is it in the USA for people to wear pants that end above the ankles?

Posted by TheShyBuck@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 251 comments

DryFig511@reddit

I think pants slightly rolled up to be around the ankle is actually pretty common in many groups in the U.S. and no one would look at you that weird. Preppy men roll up chinos with boat shoes when it's warm. "Hipster" guys wear rolled up jeans with converse or docs. And tailored pants that hit at the ankle are not strange here in my opinion either ([example](https://www.asos.com/us/prd/208899541?acquisitionsource=pasteboard))

Why is Easter not as big in America compared to Europe even though you are more religious?

Posted by Ada-Mae@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 1175 comments

DryFig511@reddit

As a Jew with one Christian grandparent, I grew up celebrating Christmas for the fun of Santa Claus and all that, but Easter is a bit more of a dividing line between the beliefs of the two religions.

Do foreign born immigrants in the USA follow American social norms, such as men avoiding physical contact with the same gender?

I was just going to comment this same thing. It's very strange as if people don't even know what locking arms means. I come from NYC where people walk everywhere, and I do not automatically assume at all that people walking with arms locked are romantically involved. I (a woman) walked like that with friends all the time growing up, especially if it was cold out. I will admit it's a lot less common to see with men, but I wish that was not the case. American men need more platonic love and connection.

I did this with friends growing up in NYC all the time. I wouldn't think it weird at all to see two women doing this, especially if it's cold! I wish it was normalized here platonically for men as well.

How do Americans feel about outdoor cats?

Posted by Fine-Durian6151@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 1496 comments

DryFig511@reddit

I would say most people who think about it a lot or who really care about cats in the US are (in my opinion rightly) against it, but I don't think the general public opinion about it is as drastic as on Reddit. While it's not like places in Europe and the UK where it's encouraged, outdoor cats are still common throughout the country.

Is really that normal for teenagers to throw parties at their own house?

Posted by mdelgado73@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 479 comments

DryFig511@reddit

Depends where you live, and how rich your parents are. I grew up in the city and most of my (working class) friends didn't have big houses or parents who went away on vacation all the time. In the suburbs and with more well off communities it is definitely more common.

Do you think it's strange that some Married couples don't share a bed?

Yup, my husband and I have been sleeping separately for the past year or so since our baby was born, we each sleep with him half of the night so the other can get some uninterrupted sleep. We didn't intend for it to go so long and feel a bit embarrassed about it sometimes, but we are doing what works for our family, and honestly we're closer, more connected, and deeper in love than we've ever been!
