It is still possible, as a middle earner, to live commutable distance to a city, in a large house, near a good school with 2 cars on the drive and have a single income

I would say if you are a high earner, to the extent you can live comfortably and well in London, there is more on offer there, weather excluded of course.

I lived there for a few years and if family life was simpler, I wouldn’t have come back. The lifestyle is significantly better if you are a middle income earner. It has its problems as with anywhere, however, less so than the UK in my experience.

Is it odd that I'm being asked to contribute financially to a meal?

Posted by Feeling_Basil7535@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 767 comments

Craft_on_draft@reddit

I don’t think it is wildly abnormal, but abnormal nonetheless. In general if you invite someone to yours for dinner you should cover the cost, however, if the cost is prohibitively high, I guess you can ask for a contribution. I wouldn’t dream of asking people for money if I am cooking for them, however, it can get rather expensive cooking for a few people

Ours absolutely wasn’t useful, making ashtrays, cookies every week and sewing bags. It would have been useful if there was thought given to the practical application of what we were taught

why was english wool the best in europe at one point?

Posted by Amazing_Fish2078@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 9 comments

Craft_on_draft@reddit

It has much to do with the consistency of the wool rather than the quality, the breeds we had, the consistent climate and the geography led to a consistent quality of wool. There was likely better quality wool available but English wool was consistently high quality

You can claim and get a new case if your case is damaged in transit, I have done it a couple of times, when I collect my case, if it is damaged I go to the desk and they give me a new one, based on the value of my current case. Also, I would recommend Samonsite of course, but they are spenny

Depends who it is, if it is my parents, siblings or nephews, i don’t mind it at all, they just let themselves in and if they want a drink etc help themselves If it is someone I have to make an effort for, I don’t like unexpected visits.

Where can I get contact lenses made (with prescription check)?

Posted by vaynehelsing@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 4 comments

Craft_on_draft@reddit

You don’t have contact lenses made, you get a prescription and there are pre manufactured lenses that match that prescription. I get mine from Alensa online as it is cheaper than the high street. I just get my eyes tested etc every 6 months and update the prescription I buy if needed
