What are you paying for taxis where you are?

Posted by bellabanjsk@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 94 comments

Conor2704@reddit

I agree it's annoying, but depending on how rural you are, you have to factor in the the driver is unlikely to get another pick up near you, so you're effectively paying for his travel time to and from you as well, whci makes it more reasonable. In a large city, there so much demand for cabs that this isn't an issue, so they're often cheaper.

Why are so many young people out of work?

Conor2704@reddit

It's a lovely thought, but corporation / business tax is nowhere near enough to pay for universal basic income which is what you'd need to do to make than possible. Because people aren't getting time off, they're losing jobs, or jobs are not being replaced.

Should I get a graduate job in Manchester or Newcastle-upon-Tyne?

Posted by itsnotjennie@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 38 comments

Conor2704@reddit

Not a clue from professional perspective, but if thinking of living in either city long term, it might be worth factoring in house prices for both renting and buying. I'd imagine as a general rule Manchester would be considerably more expensive on both counts.

How did pubs survive for so long?

Posted by No_Yak9893@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 188 comments

Conor2704@reddit

Lots of people didn't have as much entertainment at home. No computers, no Internet, lots without TVs, or for those with TVs only a few channels. Most people's friendship/community groups were local to each other, so they would meet at the pub regularly. Also, alcohol from shops was less accessible and more expensive comparatively to what it is now.

Lots of crime dramas are brilliant by the BBC. Line of duty, Blue lights, Kin (not made by BBC, but is on iplayer, actually an Irish show). The capture, I'm sure there's more but I can't remember them. Also, despite it being much more than 10 years old, Luther is a personal favourite!

What age did you or will you clear your home mortgage?

260k mortgage I took out 5 years ago (when I was 32). Originally 25 year term, so would've paid off at 57, or maybe a couple of years earlier with overpayment. However, just had to remortgage last week, had to increase term back to 25 years due to the orange faced nob and his obsession with war increasing the interest rates , so will now be looking at early 60s.

Is living year round in a tent in the UK actually realistic?

Posted by Far-Piccolo-3774@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 837 comments

Conor2704@reddit

I once went on holiday and met someone who'd been living in a tent for about 2 years in the lake district. She loved full time on a maintained campsite, so had access to hot showers, electricity, WiFi etc. She enjoyed it overall. But admitted it was difficult, and was intending to buy a house ASAP (her reason for doing it was to save money for a deposit). Her and her partner (who also loved with her) were both very outdoorsy types, so had lots of high quality camping gear etc, and i don't think it would be very feasible without some really decent kit, especially in winter.

Learn to swim properly is mine. Strangely, as a kid, I learned at school, and despite always being very poor at it (worst in the class by some way, I actually could swim a bit, do a width or something). When I was in my later teens, I had a crazy growth spurt (think 6 inches in 6 months sort of crazy) lost all coordination for a time, would struggle running as my legs were longer than my brain was expecting etc, but I completely lost the ability to swim, just never regained the coordination needed. Now at the wrong end of my 30s and still can't do it, despite multiple attempts on holidays, with a very strong, former competitive swimmer as a wife trying to help me. I just can't do it, I just start sinking and don't move despite kicking and flailing arms everywhere. My plan is, as my oldest kid is growing up, I'm gonna get a few lessons as they're learning so I can always take them if they want.

Thanks for clarifying. Apparently it's all about how quickly you cool it after cooking. If cooled quickly it's safe to reheat, but if cooled slowly it's not. Strange.

If it was me, I'd say yes, and absolutely nuke it in the microwave then hope for the best. A lot of people will say no if it includes rice, as reheating rice can be dangerous, so you do need to be careful.

What are some great UK cities to live in?

Posted by Saffffron@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 15 comments

Conor2704@reddit

My personal favourite would be Newcastle. It admittedly isn't as multicultural as many other large UK cities, but it's definitely improving on that front, and the city centre itself is quite multicultural. It has the Tyne River ennuing through, you can walk along it for miles, loads of bars, restaurants etc. And with regards to places to live, loads of flats near the quayside, or the Ouseburn (another river) is a very up and coming area too.

Where's dead flat on the North West?

Conor2704@reddit

Good on you for deciding to make the effort. I'm not from there, so don't know loads, but there's definitely a fair amount of canals in and around Manchester - most of the towpaths running along them are walkable for miles and miles, and pretty much perfectly flat.

Conor2704@reddit

As someone who's 6'2", if I could afford it, absolutely. I've been on many long haul flights without extra leg room, and I can tell you it's miserable. I've actually ended up with bruising on one of my knees from it being pressed against the seat in front of me for the best part of 14 hours before. I've had extra leg room once or twice due to frying with a baby so having the seat at the front and it was an absolute game changer.

To be fair I can kind of understand DVDs, as the streaming services keep chipping and changing their content so you never really know what you've got access to, it can help to have some DVDs of your favourites, plus you do get the extra bits on DVDs. I have absolutely no idea how videos are still a thing though.

What are your favourite face shaving products?

Posted by TheTinman369@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 37 comments

Conor2704@reddit

As someone with similar facial hair issues, the only way I've consistently kept a clean shave is by using rotary shavers, rather than bladed razors. I know a lot of people aren't keen on them, but if you're willing to spend a bit on a decent on, it's then really easy to keep facial hair at bay with them. My recommendation would be to go to the barber to get a proper close wet shave, then use a rotary shaver every day for the upkeep. Just make sure to use a moisturiser that works for you along with it.

It's frustrating that it's ongoing, but I really don't think you can complain about it starting at 9.30am. That's definitely reasonably late in a morning to start, I think anything after 8am is fair game. Everyone has different work/sleep schedules etc, but generally 8am is considered normal for starting noisy work. Officially 7am is the time that the UK says you can start noisy building work.

Posted by Wild-Novel-6561@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 45 comments

Conor2704@reddit

No, but eating out each day for lunch is reserved for those who can afford it. I would say that most people who are on minimum wage aren't eating lunch out everyday. My wife and I are fortunate enough to both earn considerably more than minimum wage but we both make our lunches at home each evening and bring them to work as we can't justify the cost of buying lunch out everyday. Maybe rather than making sarcastic comments towards people who are answering your question with a genuine response you should actually consider their answers instead of just brushing them off and still assuming you're right...

If you don't put it on at all, then you won't be using nay energy so your bills shouldn't change. But, if you do use it, even a small amount, then your bills will be higher in winter as you're having to use more energy to get the house to the same temperature (as you're starting from a colder inside temperature, and battling against a colder outside temperature). For example, it is sometimes cheaper in the long run to have the heating on little and often to keep a house at a reasonable temperature, let's say 18°C, rather than letting it drop to 12 or 13°C and trying to heat it all the way back up with a big blast of heating. Depends on each house and insulation etc though.

Currently on porridge instead because im trying to cycle to work and back more regularly and I find I have more energy. When I inevitably stop cycling during the depths of winter, I'll either go back to eggs, or maybe just be lazy and have a couple slices of toast instead.
