Anyone remember the chatter about Social Security not having enough money for our generation?

Posted by Voltesjohn@reddit | GenX | View on Reddit | 214 comments

Cinnamaker@reddit

The worries about social security have not changed since you first heard concerns 25 years ago. We are just getting closer to when the problems will happen. Social security was never a savings account, where one generation put in money, and pulls that same money out later. Payments to retirees today are basically funded by younger, working generations' payroll taxes. The worry was that once boomers start retiring over 2010 to 2030, they would be a disproportionately large generation collecting social security, and a much smaller generation of younger workers paying for it. This would eat through social security resources by the time Gen X starts retiring. In the 1960s, there were five workers paying taxes for every retiree collecting social security. Nowadays, there are less than three workers for every retiree, and that ratio is going to get worse in the future. You will probably see social security age extended for future generations, as people's life expectancy gets longer. Beyond that, there are different proposals to "fix" the problem for future generations, but not a lot of political willpower and consensus to deal with it. It also becomes a generational battle of older generations wanting their promised benefits, versus younger generations being asked to pay for it.

Nowadays, there are less than three workers for every retiree, and that ratio is only going down. Politically, one party does not want to cut benefits. The other party does not want to raise taxes. So the government winds up borrowing money, kicking the problem down the road as debt for future generations to pay off. You will probably see social security age extended for future generations, as people's life expectancy gets longer. Beyond that, there are different proposals to "fix" the problem for future generations, but not a lot of political willpower and consensus to deal with it.

These sexy moments make Star Trek TNG feel more like a Sci-Fantasy than a Sci-Fiction

It's more that everyone throws out an idea that has zero chance of working. Then engineering suggests an idea ... it's a long shot that's never been tested and might defy physics ... but it's the only chance they got. Since that is their only workable option with any viability, they move forward with that.

What Happened To Music

You got old, are out of touch with what turns on younger people. Happens with every generation. I grew up on rock & roll. My mother grew up on classical music. She always complained how absurdly simple my rock music was: three or four chords, often similar chord progressions, and simple song structures. She complained how electric guitar and amps covered up any playing ability, unlike acoustic instruments that required a delicate touch and nuance. She complained how no one could sing properly in the rock music I listed to. She used to get on the piano, and belt out a few simple chords and sing badly, to make fun of how simple and easy rock music was. Nowadays people tell youngsters, "I can rap too, doesn't take any skills - My-name-is-Jamie-and-I'm-here-to-say."

I Miss Being Able to Buy a Person an Album, Tape or CD. I Mean How Do You Wrap Up a Playlist and Give It As a Gift?

Cinnamaker@reddit

Giving music as a gift was often a bad idea, like giving someone a tie as a gift. People have personal tastes. In your head, you're going to convert them to loving something you love. But I remember seeing people get music as a gift and reacting like, "okay ... well, that's an album I don't know."

Cinnamaker@reddit

This article gets circulated as proof of how "bad" music has become, but the author's conclusion is not that. He points out how key changes become a bad cliche in popular music, even calling it "lazy songwriting". In popular music, many key changes were mostly moving up a half or whole step for the final chorus - which was not inventive. You've heard that a million times in power ballads and bad songs from the 80s and 90s. His point is partly showing how certain songwriting techniques become an overused cliche, and people have since moved away from overused cliches to innovate in other ways.

Did anyone else find it funny that people could eat alien food, no problem?

Posted by Icarus367@reddit | TNG | View on Reddit | 116 comments

Cinnamaker@reddit

There's a TNG where they make first contact with a new civilization, and Picard offers the leader a drink he describes as made from grapes from Earth. No one was checking if the alien species might tolerate a new food from Earth. And nothing was holding Kirk back from wanting to making love with an alien who was totally green. But Trek doesn't get bogged down in real world details, which would just sidetrack and slow down the narrative. Someone needs to go from here to there to interact with another character - we got warp drive, and teleporters. Someone needs to communicate with a new species - we got translators. Hard science fiction loves the nitty gritty of how you actually and realistically get from point A to point B (like the Expanse show). But Trek is more like what they call soft science fiction

Why are Xennials against their High School Reunion?

Posted by New_Forester4630@reddit | Xennials | View on Reddit | 996 comments

Cinnamaker@reddit

It's impossible to do an event between Thanksgiving to New Year. For people at age when they have young kids to deal with. And for a generation that treats an RSVP as an option, not a commitment. Too many strikes against this event. You are doing well if you can get like 30% to show up for a reunion. I attended a reunion that was decently attended, but a couple people really worked the crowd to get people to show. Like they would personally contact people to tell them so-and-so was definitely going to be there (and already booked a flight), and wanted to see them. We found out later they were making half of that up, but it got momentum going for people to make the effort to go.

Aziz Ansari had an interview where he said a younger guy asked him for advice on doing stand up comedy. Aziz recommended the younger guy watch Eddie Murphy's stand-up specials from the 1980s, and learn from that. The younger guy came back to Aziz, and said he couldn't get over the homophobia in Murphy's stand-up act. Aziz discussed how that made him realize his age. What was funny during the time he was young doesn't work for the younger generation today.

Remember chain letters?

Posted by username53976@reddit | GenX | View on Reddit | 7 comments

Cinnamaker@reddit

They were weirdly self-referential, for something people were supposed to copy word for word to forward. Like, "A man in Denver sent 20 copies of this letter, and got a raise the next week. Another person broke the chain, and they lost their job the next week." Now people do this on Facebook. "If you are a true friend of mine ..."

Can we please be the generation to stop saying ‘Kids these days’?

Cinnamaker@reddit

Every generation also says, "We are NOT going to be like our parents," and they turn into their parents. You are already seeing this happen with Gen X. Gen X was the generation that was okay with the "sensitive male" (which the older generations growing up on John Wayne didn't get). Then Millennials were okay talking about insecurities and anxieties. Then Gen Z was okay about therapy, everyone should do therapy. Nowadays I see Gen X people criticizing Gen Z as weak for that. It's just something many Gen X don't get, growing up as independent, latchkey kids who had to fend for themselves. Why and how did gen x become the "forgotten generation"?

Posted by Gallantpride@reddit | GenX | View on Reddit | 455 comments

Cinnamaker@reddit

When do you see generations being talked about? Just your own impressions from whatever you look at? By the time you were growing up, people were past taking about Gen X and were talking about Millennials, and now Gen Z, in terms of anything about young people and the future. The Boomers were a large population, and we still haven’t had a Gen Z US president. When you see people talking about or ranting about old people, it is still very much the Boomers.

Tiffany (Bride of Chucky) was introduced 10 years after the original Chucky movie. By then no one remembered My Buddy, much less his sister. The inspiration for Tiffany was Bride of Frankenstein. Some promo materials from then depicted Tiffany with a white streak in her hair, like the Bride of Frankenstein had.

In 1984, a Gobot cost like $3.49. A car Transformer cost like $8.99, and even the small cassette Transformer cost like $6.99. For a kid then, the difference was huge! Like a week or two of allowance, which you had to wait all that time to save up.
