I’m a grown ass man and I have a bookshelf full of gijoe, robotech, etc. toys ( most still on the box) and it’s brings my friends so much joy….the wives and girlfriends just share worried looks.
No lies detected LOL...in my case, it's GoBots, TMNT and ThunderCats, with some Star Warz Pez dispensers just for class. The rest are horror fiction. So agreed with the worried looks. Absolutely no one in my circle (or immediate family, for that matter!) understands my love of horror, 80s nostalgia and/or heavy metal. God bless you guys! I have found my tribe!
I pulled some of my old Go-Bots and Transformers out of the attic for my son to play with. The rubber tires were almost all brittle, but they mostly held up great otherwise. Now, sometimes, he'll ask "Daddy, why don't they make Go-Bots any more?" I don't know, son.
They technically do.
Go Bots were pulled into the Transformers line in early 90s. I'm fairly certain they are supposed to be the "Minicons" from the shows like Armada. I know Optimus had one called Leader 1.
In 1984, a Gobot cost like $3.49.
A car Transformer cost like $8.99, and even the small cassette Transformer cost like $6.99.
For a kid then, the difference was huge! Like a week or two of allowance, which you had to wait all that time to save up.
Transformers started in '84. Toy robots that transform into other objects were a big deal in Japan, so Hasbro bought two competing Japanese brands and combined them into Transformers. The first generation toys look like two different brands of the same concept because they literally were.
I'm not even a fan. One of my college roommates paid for a solid year of tuition and rent by selling his toy collection, and he recited random Transformers and GI Joe facts constantly.
Unpopular opinion - the Voltron’s (the vehicle one and lions) were better than both of em.
I also loved my M.A.S.K. Toys better also. That iroc-z with wings was the boss.
VOLTRON DAIRUGGER !!!!! The matchbox full Voltron dairugger set is one of my grail toys.
It was the toy that made me realize my parents were lying about loving me because I never got it for Christmas. ;)
But yeah Voltron’s vehicle force was awesome
Hahaha! Yeah my grandmother knew I was into that stuff and there was this store that had all these super cool Japanese import robots and other toys. I got a Daitarn 3 tank set, some other knockoff transformer thingirs and a mazinger z toy from there. Great stuff.
I wrote to the company and told them I lost the pilot for one of their expensive toy sets that I would never, ever get my hands on. I asked if I could buy just the character with his Mask. They sent me a new one in a plastic baggie with no further comment or questions.
My mom found out and stopped me from sending letters to all the toy companies. I already had several of them written when my scheme was found out...
"M-M-M-Mask, feel the mighty power of the masquerade!" LOL...the whole series is free on Tubi, I love that I can introduce my daughters to key points of my childhood.
She creeped me out sometimes - her and Evil Lynn. Like 3 out of 10 episodes I’d just be uncomfortable with those two characters.
But that electric stomp was dope.
Forgot about that one - she was lumped in with the butch (pink hair) GI Joe/Cobra female… just another baddie.
I still don’t understand why those other two made me occasionally fearful.
I LOVED Transformers as a kid. One of my most cherished possessions were 2 of the Dinobots. One year I got GoBots from Grandma cause of course she didn't understand the difference. 5 year old me did a TERRIBLE job at hiding my disappointment...
Talked about it later with Grandma and she just laughed it off, super sweet woman.
lol I'm exaggerating a little bit, but I always thought Go Bots were much easier to transform than Transformers, and that's what made Transformers better. It was like having to learn a secret handshake for each one
That doesn't surprise me since they were a Tonka product. They made quality products. Used to ride around in the back of my dump truck. Thinking back it's hard to believe I was ever small enough to fit my knees in the back.
Yeah, I think he said they had more metal and less plastic than Transformers, but everyone else seems to think Transformers were better, so I don’t know.
gobots were marketed in america by tonka. But the first generations for both were japanese toys imported into the US by Hasbro and tonka. Gobots were Machine Robo (Popy/bandai) and transformers were Diaclone (Takara). And they were similar designs for the most part. The $4 basic gobots were more complex and articulated (and metal pieces) than the $5 transformers minibots. But the Full size transformers were more complex than both. However there was a full line of "[Super Gobots](https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&v=jEHm-NNj24I)" that was very much the equivalent to transformers in price, size and complexity.
Gobots could have been the winner... Ultimately I think it came down to the transformers having a much better backstory, marketing, cartoon and comic series aimed towards older kids while gobots was just a kiddy hanna barbera cartoon...
Thank you for that explanation, it actually clarifies a lot. I’m really fascinated by which toys took off in our youth and which didn’t. Like, for me, She-Ra looms so large and I had so many toys I thought that line stretched across the decade, but nope, it was 2-3 years and aside from the new Netflix reboot, no one talks about it much (at least not as much as He-Man).
She-ra is actually credited in one documentary as being the cause of the fall of He-Man. They already had girls playing with the toys and making She-ra is believed to have just made He-Man less cool for the boys. Not sure I agree as I watched both with my sister in the 80's and thought both were cool. But I am not normal either.
Interesting…see, and I wanted nothing to do with He-Man. My cousins had that sliming playset which grossed me out and Skeletor scared the shit out of me. So He-Man was not part of the universe in my room! 😂
I’m not sure that She-Ra caused He-Man’s downfall so much as the late 80s started to leave that sort of fantasy/barbarian genre behind anyway.
It definitely was heavier and more rigid than the Transformers but it was a smaller model with a basic transformation for arms and legs and I think the head was somewhat static and the nose of the submarine acted as its cover.
The "deluxe" Go-Bots were at least as good as the original Optimus Prime in terms of metal parts and the quality of the mechanisms, and they were cheaper. But the cartoon was just *not* good. I mean, in retrospect, neither is the G1 Transformers show but the animation is markedly better and it shared a lot of talented voice actors with GI Joe; people like Frank Welker, Michael Bell, Alan Oppenheimer, Charlie Adler, Rob Paulsen, and Chris Collins (RIP Starscream and Cobra Commander).
The GoBots were more simple, and die cast parts were common. But man, their joints wore out in no time. All my GoBots were floppy after a couple of months.
Ok, now that makes sense in context to other comments. My husband thought the metal made them better-made than Transformers, I’ll have to ask if he noticed the joints wore out faster.
Yep. When I asked for transformers-anything, I got Go Bots.
When my dad got stationed back to the US, my parents thought they were getting us Transformers beach blankets in Germany. We were the only kids in Melbourne, Florida with Go Bot knockoff beach towels... etc.
I was a huge transformers fan... But in a lot of ways the gobots were superior toys (cheaper, regular characters were better than minibots and deluxe gobots were awesome). So I used them interchangeably along with my convertors, etc.
But man, that cartoon was bad.... I wonder if it was hard for frank welker to finish his lines for megatron and then have to go record his scooter bits...
My mom didn't know whether to get Transformers or Go Bots one Christmas, so she got one of each and wrapped them up. I told her I wanted Transformers, so she said "Ok, I'll give the other one to your cousin", but she mixed up which was which since they were already wrapped and I got the Go-Bot. Such disappointment.
To be fair, it was apparently on TV from 84-85 so your brain probably pruned those memories out sometime over the last 40 years
We were young enough that I apparently though I might be a robot vehicle when I grew up
I had all of them except for Snoop, which was a Rolls Royce-type car I think. Dad and I would scour the racks at Shopko, K-Mart, and Pamida but never found him.
I haven't thought about Go-Bots in almost 40 years--can't believe I remember all this.
I tried to get some Psy-Kill merch a few years ago. Maybe a shirt or something... there was NOTHING. Then, all of the sudden, Psy-Kill made a cameo appearance in Guardians Christmas Special. Now he's back in the Zeitgeist. Weird.
The Go Bots stopped me from a life of crime.
At 7 I was in Woolworths with my mother shopping. I found a small Go Bot toy (matchbox car sized) opened on a toy shelf. I took it. Played with it while my mom shopped. Then pocketed it when we left.
I waited for some beeper to go off as I left the store, or an employee to come rushing after me, or the police to chase our car home. I sweated it out all night believing that I’d be caught (I was a nervous kid).
After that experience I never stole anything again. I’m certain without the Go Bot experience at Woolworth my thievery would have progressed to larger toys…Star Wars figures, then Transformers, He Man, then to GI Joe vehicles. Next thing you know I’d be Oceans Elevening Toys R Us for the GI Joe USS Flagg…
There was always that one kid in the neighborhood who preferred Go Bots and bring them to the big Transformer battles we would have. It really messed up the vibe.
A new phrase I coined. “Fucking gobots!”
When you wanted a 28 point of articulation transformer but got a 5 point articulation gobot because it was cheaper and your family didn’t wa t to buy one for you.
Same goes with life. Expect option A but you get option D
When I was a kid at toys r us I heard another kid trying to decide between a transformer and a few gobots.
He asked ( I’m assuming) his uncle/brother what he should do and the older brother replied :
“Get the transformer , gobots are for hillbillies “
This may have already been said elsewhere, but for what it's worth, GoBots actually debuted in North America a full year before the Transformers. I never really understood the "hate," I liked both series but growing up, we definitely didn't have Transformers money lol. So six year old me was over the moon when I got Cykill and Leader One for Christmas that year from my Grandparents. Still have them on my shelf today!
I loved both but Transformers was far superior.
Hell, even their animated movies were incredibly different. The Go Bots movie was aimed at 5yr olds whereas Transformers: The Movie was aimed closer to teens.
I wanted the combiner Puzzler so much as a kid. All the individual vehicles being sports cars was very cool and when combined, the end product actually looked really good by 80's standards.
Would be cool to see a super detailed modern update of Puzzler like we have with various Transformer combiners.
I had some GoBots and they were okay. I played with them along with my other toys, but even as a 6 or 7 year old I knew they were second rate compared to TransFormers. But hey with a few GoBots, GiJoes, Hot wheels, Transformers, and maybe some Legos... endless fun could be had! 😀
The GoBots eventually were bought by Hasbro and kind of amalgamated with Transformers.
This Christmas I found a Transformers version of Crasher, which I ended up getting my son. Was basically a re-do of a recent Autobot Mirage, but the black and purple scheme was neat to see again.
I was happy with both toys. I also had he-man toys and voltron toys. Ninja turtles came around and everyone joined up to fight each other in a royal rumble ring. Oh yeah, I had wwf toys and the ring, so it was always a tournament.
I'll never understand why everyone insists transformers were better. I'm rewatching both with my 4yo son. I still think gobots was a better kids show. Transformers is a lot of a kid to follow. Also there is a crazy roster of characters to keep track of. I'm still confused. But my kid knows them all already 🤣
I liked that you could transform the go bots fast - didn’t slow down the playing. Smaller too. Want to bring a few? Stick them in a pocket. Great toys.
Aw man. My parent hd a thing about not splurging for the real deal, even though they could afford it. Something about not chase trendy brands I think. So I got the Go Bots for sure. One that turned into a handgun...
Go Bots were like Betamax and later Blackberry. Objectively better than their main competitors, but the tide of public opinion was too much to overcome.
I actually liked Go Bots more than Transformers when I was a kid. I had a ton of the toys and remember watching the cartoon a lot on the USA Cartoon Express.
