Tech recruiters treating me terribly because of my resume gaps

Just change the gaps to "Education" and list the tech you used in your side projects and home lab. If they ask about it, then its your time to talk about something you're interested in.

Back when you could move the taskbar I used to find it on the sides, or at the top on client computers fairly often. I would always ask if they meant to have the bar in that position, they never did and didn't know how to fix it. Had a couple who accidentally rotated their screen.

More states are requiring operating systems to ask for age via ID, such as Windows, Mac, Linux, etc. How do us hackers fight back?

What annoys me is the need to switch to the latest model/provider all the time. A new model comes out, it's fantastic, gets things done, doesn't go off the rails, scores high in benchmarks and garners a ton of great reviews. Then two weeks later it is shit. They seem to nerf it once the hype-train has done its job.

Anyone else dealing with "estimation by AI" on your team?

I was using Claude for a project this week and it's estimates during the planning phase were pretty long. It had shit planned out to 8 weeks, and I finished it in four days.

Self-taught folks- How did you stay focused and avoid the rabbit hole?

CaffeinatedTech@reddit

I find tutorials boring. If they don't walk me through building up a project, I skim them and toss them. I do enough to get an idea, then just start my own project with the reference docs open. Back before the internet I had the reference manual to learn from. Even the on-board help in turbo pascal and Borland turbo C++ was great.

they finally started tracking our usage of ai tools

How the f*ck do you do estimates?

Posted by These_Trust3199@reddit | ExperiencedDevs | View on Reddit | 413 comments

CaffeinatedTech@reddit

Yeah it's the unrealised scope that gets you. I try to do a high level plan of each feature and estimate the hours for each point. Once I feel like I've planned the whole thing I add up all the individual estimates and add 50%. I think it is important that the client knows that scope changes or unrealised complexity can increase the estimated timeline. The 50% thing I found works best for my level of underestimation and under-planning.

Version upgrades of software and libraries always sucks?

Posted by commonsearchterm@reddit | ExperiencedDevs | View on Reddit | 85 comments

CaffeinatedTech@reddit

I upgraded a symfony project from 4.4 to 6.4 last year. It sucked, and now the client pays me a management fee to keep it updated. PHP was still at 7.4, doctrine and MySQL were out of date, couple libraries archived, heaps of deprecated code and dependencies, new routing, all sorts of new shit and the magic upgrade tools didn't help much.

The project I worked on for the last year is getting scrapped and I'm not sure how to process it

Your friend sounds insecure about his own knowledge. Just do it, you'll learn a lot, and be really proud of it. You think they have an army of geniuses building those pre-builds? It's the trainees slapping them together. Don't be scared to learn something new.

The client hardly ever knows what they are talking about when it comes to computers. I let them spew forth their problems, and Intuit a couple of scenarios. What's the harm in asking further questions to narrow it down? I do agree that people should try to be better at communicating effectively.

Whats everyone's thoughts on juniors using AI code assistants?

Posted by Ramaen@reddit | ExperiencedDevs | View on Reddit | 231 comments

CaffeinatedTech@reddit

Eh, if they can solve problems without spending hours consulting the chat bot, good for them. Clearly knowing your shit is always better, but whatever. If they never progress past junior level, that's on them.

Yeah you can cook chicken too long in sous vide. It changes the texture, and the moisture leaves the meat, ending up in your sink. Check your temp, run it for a shorter time, add some garlic powder to the bag, pan fry it after it's done to get the nice texture and flavour on the outside.

Quick PSA: If you are writing if (condition) {return true;} else {return false;} please just stop. Especially in a strongly typed language where condition has to be a boolean anyway.
