Why America doesn’t have bathhouses?

Posted by prettiestmagnoila@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 1590 comments

Bbkingml13@reddit

I think it depends, some people really are referring to communal bathing. Some are referring to something more along the lines of a communal spa you share with lots of strangers. I think even those of us in the U.S. who know about the bathhouses that are more spa-like, still can’t imagine any relaxation coming from being around a bunch of strangers while trying to get spa treatment.

Weddings within budget

Having a venue with catering and alcohol in Dallas would normally be like $200-300 per person on average. $15,000 / 120 people is $125, and that’s without factoring in costs like a wedding dress, hair and makeup, a photographer, rings, invites, cakes, DJ, etc.

Do most Americans have those huge fridges?

Posted by Whole-Sushka@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 2898 comments

Bbkingml13@reddit

Well it’s financially beneficial to keep disabled people productive. So in a strange way, it keeps accommodation important. They just don’t actually do much to support the disabled or helping make accommodating disabilities affordable. But I’ll take some accessibility and anti disability discrimination over nothing

I loved Italy but I’m disabled (I’m young and it’s not visible though, so nobody even wanted to let me sit anywhere, even when using a cane) and things like this proved to me how inaccessible so much of Europe is if you’re not healthy. I can’t even reheat food in a microwave to bring back to bed every single day, I’d starve to death if I had to go to the store that often and physically carry my groceries.

You can look up the form from your insurance to submit the cost for the tests so it will count toward your out of pocket max. Won’t be your deductible since it’s not medically indicated, but to the OOP.

As an outsider, the concept of high schools having massive parking lots specifically for students is mind-blowing. Is it really that common for 16-year-olds to drive themselves to school every day?

My mom couldn’t wait to not have to drive me to 5:00am practice every day, then drop my brother off at 7:45, then either pick one of us up right after school and one after practice, or after 2 different practices, or bring food before games, etc. I genuinely don’t think we would’ve been able to live the life filled with sports that we did if she wasn’t a stay at home mom. And I went to private school so people didn’t live very close by. I lived “close” and it was a 15-20 minute drive within Dallas. I knew people who had to drive over an hour both ways, with multiple siblings, at multiple schools. And most of these people were on financial aid, so it’s not like they had Nannie’s doing the driving.

I just want to throw this out there, since you said you don’t have jobs yet, so location might still be up for discussion. WE were in a Sonoma winery tour group with some folks from the pacific NW, and we said we’re from Dallas. They said their friends moved to Dallas for a big opportunity and were really excited for it (Dallas), but they were so utterly miserable “here” that they moved back within two years. They said it was a horrible experience, not a real city, etc., and having heard this before, I asked “where exactly did they move? I bet it was not Dallas.” It was not Dallas, it was Allen. There are some people who love Allen. There are some people who prefer big cities who would rather live in the middle of nowhere than in Allen. So just make sure you’re actually wanting to move to Allen, and not Dallas or Fort Worth.

I don’t think students who have to work their way through school full time are able to get as much out of their education as those who don’t. They might end up with a degree, but not as much of the actual education and learning they could’ve had.

My family lives in dallas but the lake house is at lake tawakoni near Greenville. I don’t think any of us would ever make that drive without staying at least one night, even if it was just to go check on a plumbing issue or something. It’s not like driving for an hour on an interstate where you can just coast down the highway, it’s a pretty cognitively intensive and stressful task to drive in that traffic. With that budget, I’m not totally sure you’d be where you want to be somewhere like Frisco. I think Rowlett may be a good place to look?

It’s still a medication that changes you psychologically. Which can trigger a full blown episode if someone with psychotic breaks feels like something is happening to them psychologically they can’t identify. Then imagine how bad it will be when he loses all trust in you for drugging him

Some old man lived next door to my brother and his teammates/roommates in Denton while they were in school. To keep it brief, he basically hated that there were black guys (they were actually all Tongan) living next to him, and tried to pick fights over street parking because that’s all he could find to complain about. He would only speak to my brother (the only white one) and kept coming to the house and knocking on the door to harass him every time he saw my brother was home. Nobody would answer the door. My mom and I went out there finally to talk to the guy, and he realized how ridiculous and hateful he was being…so he shifted his frustration and talked about how ridiculous it was nobody would open the door for him! I was like yeah…people our age don’t do that. Then he was like “but they’re all HUGE men! They’re all linemen! I can’t possibly be a threat!” Anyway I had to explain that people don’t even answer the phone for unknown numbers, nobody is going to open the door to talk to you when they don’t know what you’re coming over to yell at them about

I have a chronic illness that has kept me homebound, if not bedbound, for months at a time. I can get out every once in a while now and look totally fine, so people stay to think “wow, must be nice not having to work.” I have to remind them they couldn’t even go a week stuck at home with COVID lockdowns without going crazy. I’d much rather have a life and job than be in bed for a week physically suffering, but also so bored
