As much as I hate Ted Cruz, the truth is he’s coming back before the storms. News ran with his flight story but fail to follow up with the fact he’s coming back.

With even the smallest amount of context, we can determine that TC leaves the state when the grid is at near failure. I refuse to downvote you without actual explanation.... but.... think of Snowball... the sweet pup that their family left in the freeze a few years ago. Have no empathy, fine, but will you really feel nothing for poor Snowball?

I tried to go to HEB yesterday, pulled into the parking lot and pulled right back out, it was a zoo at like 2pm. People think they're going to eat a loaf of bread a day for 4 days all of a sudden.

Thats because they are lol the time they spend jaw jacking on a normal day at work they will be hoping the power stays on and binge watch a show or 2... hell i got an extra loaf myself becuse a jaw of strawberry preserves hates to see me coming! lord knows im gonna be gaming and making sammiches EARLY in the morning!!!

There’s a specific demographic of people that shop at HEB that causes them to run out for these events. My Walmart and winco weren’t hit this bad
View on Reddit #76549529

Exactly. While the morning idiots were pillaging HEB I was a mile away at the Coit and Spring Creek Walmart picking up a few things. Checkout wait time? 0 minutes.

I was at the Parker/Preston Walmart Neighborhood Market. Now granted, the store busier than usual (usually, it's a ghost town), but parking was relatively smooth, they were almost fully stocked \*AND\* same thing, virtually not wait time to check out.

I grew up in Plano then I moved to Denver for a year and a half. I’m back in Plano now. 90% of you would not last in any cold environment and it shows. Guess what in Denver? Or any other place with regular snow? You wake up to your car piled up with snow and you STILL have to go to work. The day doesn’t stop. It baffles me that Texans are this skiddish about the weather amongst 20 other things.
View on Reddit #76597354

hamlet_d@reddit

So damned stupid. 2-3 days. Like literally if you buy groceries every week, you need to buy a couple of days extra worth. Or if you buy every two weeks (like the wife and I), you may not even have to go to the store. >People are dumb, panicky dangerous animals and you know it. > > --Agent K
View on Reddit #76550640

wha2les@reddit

That's what they said in 2021. "No power outages" to "rolling blackout" to "rolling blackouts means roll between permanently out to back on". No harm in stocking up more than normal to prepare.
View on Reddit #76555280

hamlet_d@reddit

one key difference: duration. 2021 had a freeze on the order of a week or more, mostly in line with forecasts. This? 4 days maybe, most forecasts saying it really doesn't get bad until early Saturday morning and might lift Monday or possibly Tuesday.
View on Reddit #76556342

ekimmd24@reddit

40 hours this storm and 2021 was 80 hours of below freezing

Gonna be below freezing from midnight on Saturday to sometime on Tuesday, assume noon that’s 84 hours.

Do people just not ever go shopping until there is a storm? Well be snowed in for a weekend - not the rest of the month. Why are people stocking up like they’ll never get a chance to buy anything ever again? I have never understood this mentality.

Lots of people are weekend grocery shoppers, if the weather is bad enough we can’t shop this weekend so we have to buy everything a few days early
View on Reddit #76545470

ColdFlamesOfEternity@reddit

Agreed. This isn't panicking buying, this is people buying a 1.5 week supply instead of a week and half a week early. Grocery stores have fast turn over. Any spike quickly depletes stock. Sure, there is probably a little panic buying out there but we haven't really seen pictures of that.
View on Reddit #76547624

hamlet_d@reddit

Stores don't empty for some people buying just .5 weeks worth of groceries. And the truth? If you buy groceries every week (and your not just subsisting), I guarantee you have enough to last you through this. We buy groceries every 2 weeks (payday) so I didn't even bother going to the store since this is our off week.
View on Reddit #76550868

BlazinAzn38@reddit

I plan meals through Saturday breakfast. I’m sure I technically have enough calories lying around my pantry and freezer to feed my family but I don’t want to have to serve them buttered egg noodles and frozen peas for 3 meals straight if I don’t have to.
View on Reddit #76579044

Farazod@reddit

Depends on your shopping habits and what you eat. Fresh vegetables, fruit, and meats or do you eat frozen? Eat a lot of chicken or fish or do you eat mostly pork and beef? I went yesterday and did our normal shopping. Nobody was stocking up like crazy, maybe a case or two of water they normally wouldn't get. Maybe some baking supplies to pass the time inside, but that's it. There's two major things going on. First is time compression of moving weekend shoppers into the normal Wednesday/Thursday shoppers. Secondly it's everyone meal planning on not going out to eat this weekend. Go to HEB on a Sunday late afternoon, it's pretty hammered and the shelves look like locusts hit them.

I work for Sam's Club meat department and its so crazy how many people are panick buying. Grabbing 4 cases of 40 count bottled water, multiple packs of toilet paper. Then when you tell customers that youre out of product they're mad at you for not having it like the store should've known idiots would mass buy and leave nothing for those who actually need those products.

People need something else to do other than feed into sensationalism about a short-term weather event. I get needing items for 1-2 days while it’s dangerous to drive, but this is an extreme example illustrating just how many idiots there are.  I went to Market Street tonight where I live to buy a few things in case it’s dangerous to drive this weekend. Despite what the sensational photos and news reports show, they had plenty of selection of essential items.  A few things were definitely gone, but no mass empty shelves… had no problem buying eggs butter milk etc.

View on Reddit #76546158

ColdFlamesOfEternity@reddit

Most people do a weekly shopping trip on the weekend. That is out this week, so they need to do it a little early and a little extra. Having the weekend shopping compacted into Wednesday and Thursday will quickly empty shelves. On average grocery stores only carry about three days of stock on hand. Obviously that differs on food type and how big the store is, but supply will always look a little thin if people have to shop early.
View on Reddit #76548000

Temporary_Nail_6468@reddit
