IT Contract work

Good advice. If you’re entitled to severance pay in Canada, make them pay you your severance pay in addition to anything that you may negotiate for consulting. It doesn’t sound like the consulting gig 5 hours is meaningful so I think you should let them call it consulting for five hours a month and ask for your current salary or more, while you spend the rest of your time finding a new job or taking on additional clients. If they don’t want to respect you and treat you right, fuck him.

Zoho books for 3 years. It’s different than QuickBooks. It takes a little tweaking and getting used to, but it works well for my needs. The free tier has worked well for me and if they forced me to go to the next tear up, I’ll pay. No nagging, no advertisements no UI changes that seem to come with QuickBooks. No gigantic cost increases every year either.

We have Ubiquiti and it works fine very reliable. We rarely need to change configs. If it breaks its cheap to replace and you can afford spares. I took home retired aps from work 5 years ago and still working @ home w phones, tablets, tv, etc.

I’m pretty much on par with what was just said you need to see it as just a job 9 to 5 or whatever your hours are when you get done with that you need to go to the gym, yoga, massage, etc to relieve the stress. Always keep this in mind you’re there to make money to pay your bills to support your family. You don’t have to give a shit. You have to do a good job and fake it.!!

Court order for email from long deleted mailbox

Posted by Mister-Ferret@reddit | sysadmin | View on Reddit | 315 comments

Backwoods_tech@reddit

I’ll make it real simple. You retain email as long as you’re legally required to do so end of story.. once that period has expired delete. You’re saving your company money and possibly legal problems down the road. Also don’t ask a lawyer how to do your job that’s absolutely moronic. I sure as hell don’t tell them how to practice law. My responses, we retained it per regulations iand we no longer have it. End of discussion. that policy has never steered me wrong..

Backwoods_tech@reddit

Well, you’re doing the job that apparently two or three people used to do and because you can do all of those tasks they’re happy to save all of that payroll money and have OP do work. I think OP needs to talk to his supervisor and set boundaries as to what work time is and what is not. I would simply say that you need time for yourself for your family, and that doesn’t mean that you’re a 24 hour seven day a week bitch !!!! Ask the CEO or the VP if it’s all right if you call them at 3 AM for the next three or four nights in a row and wake them up and ask them for help. I’m sure that they would say you would be fired and then I would say well then how is that right for me? I mean, if they’re respectable people they should try and make it right if not get another job and leave that loser company..

Are you still mostly running Cisco, or have you switched some gear to other vendors?

Posted by Fine_Incident5281@reddit | sysadmin | View on Reddit | 157 comments

Backwoods_tech@reddit

Well, regarding public schools and universities they’re basically spending your money that’s collected from your telephone bill so it’s a charity handout called E rate. that’s why they can afford to replace equipment so often cause they’re not having to pay for it out of their budget or at they pay a small fraction.

Backwoods_tech@reddit (OP)

I think your assessment is accurate. We don't integrate on AD with vendor apps or cloud services. Users MUST keep up w > 1 auth system. Benefits: 1. No single point of getting "Owned", meaning a breach or issue with one auth will not bring down our entire system. Disadvantages: 1. Greater admin

If you were a W-2 employee and you didn’t get paid and they have policies regarding getting paid for overtime, sick leave, etc. You need to file a complaint immediately with your gov’t enforcement agency. Around here we call it the wage in labor board. It might be different in your neck of the woods.

Anyone else feel like their SIEM is just expensive log storage?

Posted by Dudeman972@reddit | sysadmin | View on Reddit | 111 comments

Backwoods_tech@reddit

I third the notion of hiring a provider to analyze logs and raise alerts. I would look for one which doesn't lock you into a multi-year contract initially. I would say to the sales rep: "We expect excellent service from analysts which I can understand." Until your services are proven worthy we will only agree to 1 year commitment." Insist on better pricing for 1 year, since it is on a trial basis. You might consider using the same firm which is used for EDR/MDR / etc, so that both services are integrated.d

One day they'll come for answers I don't have.

I got one for you guys about six years ago a major financial institution had me drive 500 miles to one of their locations because they had a Telco problem. My service vehicle was loaded for Bear. I get there bright and early at 9 AM the following morning after driving half the night. they said oh the new VP is moving in. We need you to set up her phone and I was thinking to myself, this is crazy. I just drove all the way here to do that and you’re correct. All I had to do was take the patch cable on the Cisco phone and plug it into the wall and verify that it was the correct extension. !!! $200 service call, 2k teuckroll + hotel

Have you heard of organizations replacing computers with a cradled phone + monitor setup.

Posted by CoryKellis@reddit | sysadmin | View on Reddit | 755 comments

get HR and management to ask employees to sign a document that states that all company property will be returned via FedEx prior to them receiving their final compensation. The value of the asset should be put on a form that they sign upon receiving the asset, and it being placed in their custody. I promise they can find a FedEx location when their last paycheck depends on it .

It sounds to me that you’ve confused professionalism with being a doormat. I understand that sometimes our hours are non-standard but you should either be getting compensated comp time vacation or something. If you’re giving it away that’s all on you !! Believe me many are unappreciative and don’t give don’t give a…. Some doctors believe that they’re entitled prima donna’s, and that their shit doesn’t stink so if you work in healthcare and not a doctor, you’re eating turd sandwiches often. I would consider getting a covert, recording device audio video or both and use it to keep records archive those records on your personal cloud. When it comes time to deal with HR or your supervisor, you’ll have everything that you need. harassment maybe even sexual? those goodies could save your ass or get you a nice pay off on your way out the door. CYA !!

When do I throw my coworker under the bus

Posted by skipay@reddit | sysadmin | View on Reddit | 187 comments

Backwoods_tech@reddit

First off, you should already have a document explaining what needs to be done. Secondly, you need to make sure the employee follows the procedures that you’ve outlined. Next time such task is assigned. Let the Tech know that you will be coming to check it out prior to releasing him from the task that way you ensure quality and you can help him fix anything that needs to be remedied on the spot. I would be very cool about it the first time and do everything you can to help this person get it right.

Why do Hungarians "hate" foreigners?

Posted by Block-One@reddit | hungary | View on Reddit | 59 comments

Backwoods_tech@reddit

A friend of mine moved there for work and lived for 10 years. His family relocated, and shortly after he was settled at new home, he wrote a very detailed account of his Hungarian experience. If you stay there I expect you will have a very rough ride and be treated poorly. Expect fighting, harassment, jacked up rent, overcharging for services, etc. So many better choices. Good Luck.
