How can I safely re-home a dog?

Posted by TheAlwaysAnxious1@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 70 comments

AwkwardDuddlePucker@reddit

If you have exhausted all other options, have you considered behavioural euthanasia? I was in a similar situation though the dogs were older. I decided i would rather have them put to sleep knowing they were loved than go into kennels for an indeterminate amount of time and with their behavioural issues perhaps being put down anyway rather than rehomed.

What’s everyone’s go to toothpaste and why? Do they not all do the same thing?!

Gem Pink Marshmallow. I'm sure it does do the same thing but tastes better doing it. I also like Duraphat, it reminds me of toothpaste when I was younger, before everything was fresh and overly minty, but it's prescription only.

Read about nasty things happening in the US clothes supply chain on that basis a redditor recommend always wash new clothes before wearing - Is this necessary or madness in the UK? I'm using major retailers like M&S, Next, Crew Clothing

Posted by klynchk@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 75 comments

AwkwardDuddlePucker@reddit

I wouldn't say it's madness. Whilst our clothes come from all over the world UK warehouses have problems with pests too. A clothes retailer may not house food but they sometimes have canteens that generate rubbish. And neighbours that do store food and attract pests. Also the staff are human so as expected of the human race a small number exhibit questionable behaviour so I'd 100% consider washing things before wearing.

Bf tells me married couples in UK don't do joint bank accounts. Is that true?

Posted by No-Equal7322@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 940 comments

AwkwardDuddlePucker@reddit

We've always had a joint account since moving in together. It's our 'bills' account then we also have personal accounts. Same with savings one joint account and othe personal accounts that the bills account contributes to of there is any money left over. If we didn't have the joint account you could guarantee i (F) would be paying for all the house stuff as it's just not important to him. It's also good to be able to see all the bills as if anything were to happen, job loss, sickness, they still need to be paid. We have known other couples where money has disappeared and the other had no knowledge.

My Mum has 1 month to live, what should I get her for Chrmistmas?

Posted by PureEcstacy7@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 546 comments

AwkwardDuddlePucker@reddit

Sorry you are going through this ❤️ I would suggest as a gift to her something that allows you to spend time with her. Perhaps somewhere she has always wanted to go, or somewhere she currently enjoys. Perhaps she'd like to do something 'wild' like feed a tiger or another favourite animal. As a gift for you perhaps a book from her, a my story type of thing. If you search on Amazon - Story from Mum you'll get the gist. I found as time passes those little anecdotes of their lives and your childhood slip away and it would be great to have something to refer back to.

We had none but also didn't decorate and removed the doorbell. So thats to be expected. Someone i know decorated, heavily, and gave out 250 goody bags but they were in a different part of the country so perhaps there are large geographical differences.

What's with clothing retail shops being coercive when you say no to an email receipt?

Posted by OriginalIce4073@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 364 comments

AwkwardDuddlePucker@reddit

I don't mind email receipts but what I do mind is them putting 0 effort into the way they achieve this except by asking over, and over, and over. I don't want to type my email address in each time, who has time for that?? Rituals however I have a barcode they scan and I get my receipt via email. Simples 🙃

Are you all expecting an inheritance in your lifetime?

Posted by xxxJoolsxxx@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 813 comments

AwkwardDuddlePucker@reddit

I've had all the inheritance I'd expect to get as my parents and grandparents had all passed by the time i was 23. My father who had been pretty useless and absent for most of my life decided to double down on his decision to be a sh!t father and leave everything to his lover 😂 My Mom died the year after, I think she outlived him out of spite, she was not well off so after the funeral there was very little left.

I remember an article years ago about a woman that had to be extracted from her bed by firemen as she was impaled by one of the springs 😳 needless to say I changed my old rickety mattress right then. I am on my 3rd mattress, so I guess I average 10 years. While the cost of them can be quite high the cost per month or year for a good night's sleep seems like good value.

How do you ACTUALLY cool a room down in summer (without) AC?

Posted by tijitijitiji@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 279 comments

AwkwardDuddlePucker@reddit

I look at the temps having the hive thermostat helps but any thermometer would do. When it's cooler outside the windows are open when the outside temp is due to be hotter the windows, blinds, curtains are all closed. I also close them if we go out and won't be back until after the temperature has risen outside. The house is still hot but the temp has only risen 3 degrees from 6am this morning. I think I could probably get the hose cooler but also have an indoor cat to work around 🙃

Is it normal in the UK to claim council land adjacent to your garden?

Posted by pantone13-0752@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 134 comments

AwkwardDuddlePucker@reddit

It's worth noting that with newer estates land adjacent to your garden is not always adopted by the council. It depends on what was agreed at the planning stage. I know this as some of our land actually falls outside our back garden and despite looking like a verge the council should maintain is actually our responsibility.

How much children in care cost the tax payer is not what is being discussed though is it. The comment I replied too said 100k is not a lot. I was just clarifying, that is cost is for this year only and confirming the total cost to date.

I used it to turn my pets into humans! It was only 50% successful as the cat still had ears 😂 I also asked it to create me a headshot, it was a complete fail tbh. The 1st example was barely recognisable, the second I'm fairly sure I had changed ethnicity. We use it at work, mainly to trawl through document stores and return answers.

Do you, as a UK person, also think going "on holiday" is an overrated hassle and faff?

Posted by DrinkingPureGreenTea@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 1768 comments

AwkwardDuddlePucker@reddit

It's a hassle and a faff but I don't think it's overrated. We'll be dead soon and I'd rather reminisce about that time we went to... Insert a place here... Then I sat on the sofa next to my husband while he played x-box. I'll admit your week off seems practical, cost effective, productive, but some people just wouldn't find that fulfilling they prefer faff that allows them to run away from their boring real life responsibilities if just for a little bit, I'm in the second camp.

I am for it but agree there needs to be rules in place to stop people offing Grandma to get their inheritance. We are so desperate to keep people alive we seem to miss whether they have an actual quality of life. It was heartbreaking watching my Mom die a painful death and crushing for her that in the end she had 0 dignity. Honestly, we treat dogs better.

I think it's really thoughtful, and it's sad they didn't see it that way. Our previous owners left spare floor tiles, wall tiles, laminate, and paints. The paint didn't come in handy TBH - orange, bright yellow, lime green are just not my cup of tea. 8 years later, it's still in the garage waiting disposal 😂

All the millennials that just hit 40, what were you doing in your mid 20’s?

Posted by idontthinkipeeenough@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 135 comments

AwkwardDuddlePucker@reddit

I lost my Mom in my early 20's, she was 43. I was 100% not a wild child. I had a full time job with adult responsibilities. I had, and still have, only a close few friends. I spent my free time working at festivals. I met my now husband at 25, moved in together at 27, bought a house and relocated at 29 and the rest is history 💛 This may be bland to some but I'm good with this - my only wish for my 40's is to have a little more money and a little less work so I can enjoy life.

Why do Sikhs have such a great reputation in the UK?

Posted by ComprehensiveRoll562@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 1883 comments

AwkwardDuddlePucker@reddit

There are many great points here, but my thought was historic contribution to the world wars? 83,005 Sikh soldiers gave their lives during WW1 and WW2 and 109,045 were wounded. Perhaps as a nation, even the worst of us, embrace them differently, much like we embrace the Gurkhas. They are just good people.

I was reported to my child’s school by her best friend’s mom over her tantrums. What to do next?

AwkwardDuddlePucker@reddit

For me, with my encounter, I think sliding out of their life is much kinder than saying... Hi X, you came accoss as an awful person, your kid is horrid, and I really don't want to be friends. Sincerely, Me. Breaking up with friends is just... odd and not something I feel comfortable with, i guess. Luckily, I 100% don't have to see my person again, so it'll never be awkward, or perhaps I'd have distanced myself differently.

I was reported to my child’s school by her best friend’s mom over her tantrums. What to do next?

Posted by Anonym0us1000@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 220 comments

AwkwardDuddlePucker@reddit

There is someone in my life I cut off due to a particularly traumatic play date. It involved her child screaming on and off, for various reasons, for about 2-3 hours. She had an extremely gentle type of parenting that seemed to involve riding it out. There were other red flags that made me think we were totally incompatible. Sometimes people are just incompatible - I hope their concern was raised from a good place but I don't think it's worth confrting them wouldn't confront them and just move one.
