What’s people’s opinions on tattoos? Can a neck tattoo affect future jobs?

Posted by kingc2332@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 66 comments

AnxEng@reddit

I'll give you the thinking that is behind the judgement: People with neck tattoos have made a temporary fashion choice permanent, have made a deliberate effort to look different or make a statement, and have done so knowing that it is unusual in many professions. That being the case they are judged to be either deliberately wanting to be different, or they are not bright enough to realise this is what they are doing. Neither is a good sign from an employers point of view. It might not be right, but it is what people think.

How do you deal with loneliness when working remotely early/later in your career?

Posted by ArgumentFew6935@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 58 comments

AnxEng@reddit

A lot of people find this about remote work, it's not just you. Reddit is skewed heavily by people who either don't work remotely but love the idea of it, or who do and don't find the isolation a problem. Personally I hated being fully remote and so now work back in an office with real people, who I don't hate (shock on Reddit I know).

Is there a shortage of Engineering jobs?

The 'shortage of engineers' thing is invented by government as they want more 'high skilled' companies in the UK and cheaper engineers in the defence and nuclear industries. It's not from observation or stats of the situation on the ground.

I wouldn't worry, very few people care about chartership now as the institutions have shown themselves to be largely an old boys club that charge a huge amount for membership and do very little for their members. The fact someone is chartered has no bearing on whether they are a good engineer, and in fact I have met far far too many chartered engineers that have been awful engineers. The institutions only really survive because they are successful in persuading public sector organisations like the MOD that they should ask for chartership for certain roles. Outside government it is rarely if ever a factor.

I'm pretty sure you can no longer retire in your 50's from the CS if you start today. Also, the CS is full of people who coast along and don't actually want to get anything done, which can make it an infuriating place to work. Also, it makes no difference how good you are or how hard you work, you get paid the same as everyone else (which is what leads to the coasting).

It happened to me around this time too. Sports groups are really good, as are any interest groups. You may find you have to try a few different ones and go for a while before you start to make friends. It's just part of life. But make sure you are also suggesting things to do with your friends, and not just waiting for them to call you.

It's definitely worth pursuing talking therapy, even if you have to pay for it. In the meantime time there are many good apps that the NHS can provide access to, examples like Thrive, Headspace etc, that have very good CBT course in them. But definitely go back to your GP.

You're misunderstanding. It doesn't matter that they are tied to an employer, that is after they have been hired. At the time of hiring they add to the available labour, and usually at a significant discount.

If the UK and US have similar net migration rates that is insane. The US population is 5x the size of the UK's, and the land area about 37x the size.

Posted by SilentEconomist5896@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 1014 comments

AnxEng@reddit

Of course it does, companies set their pay according to the market, and most of the market has the right to work. Almost all immigrants have the right to work and are here legally, but that doesn't mean they don't affect supply and demand for labour. The reason the NHS employs so many staff from other countries is explicitly because they don't want to pay what would be required if they had to train enough and pay UK staff.

Do you think UK will catch up to continental Europe in terms of infrastructure?

Posted by Leading_Flower_6830@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 59 comments

AnxEng@reddit

That's a very good point, I hadn't considered that and should have, thanks. I still do think one of the reasons for Britain's poor economic growth is that we are so centralised, far more so than other developed countries, and this is in a large part because of government decisions on where to invest. It is also quite possible to argue that London's tax revenue is so high because of all the added investment. That is also a reason why is has received so much more over the years, as the treasury see the short term return as higher there.

It's only illegal to undertake if you move from an outer or middle lane to do it and then move back again. It's not illegal to be going faster while remaining in lane.

Yeah, my bad, it's 7x more than the lowest region (Yorkshire and Humber), for public infrastructure, and just under 3x for the average. Which is still pretty bad imo.

AnxEng@reddit

I don't think you understand the concept or per head / capita. Yes, obviously there are more people so there is more tax raised, so they get more money spent on them overall. The point is this should be a bit extra, not 6X more. I.e. it should be in proportion with the average salary difference, and business rates difference, assuming you don't care about redistribution. It should not be multiples of everywhere else.

London receives about 6x the amount of investment per head than the rest of the UK does. Think about that for a second. It's the most populated place by miles, AND receives 6X the investment PER HEAD. I'm always amazed that more people aren't apoplectic about the unfairness of this, it's why the rest of the UK is so different (poorer) than London.

That brand new shiny motorbike won't make you any more happy than a 20 year old one will. - Focus on experiences and relationships (all types of relationships). - Life is too short to work with arseholes, and to work a stressful job just for the money.
