What happens to childless old people in the UK who don't own a house?

Posted by gintokireddit@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 307 comments

AnonymousBanana7@reddit

Yes, and I'll be fucked because the country and my generation have been bled dry and all of our wealth funnelled into the pockets of the walking dead. There won't be a state pension when I reach retirement age. I doubt there'll be many other public services either.

We spend £170bn a year on the state pension - almost as much as the entire NHS. It's a non means tested handout to the richest group of people to have ever lived in this country. Around 80% own their own home, around 80% receive a private pension on top. Around 20% are millionaires. It's guaranteed to rise every year faster than inflation and faster than the wages of the working people who are paying for it. The average pensioner today, by the time they die, will have cost the state around £500k more than they ever contributed. And you don't think we're being generous enough?

Do most people think restaurants should be dog friendly?

AnonymousBanana7@reddit

As someone who used to be quite severely allergic to dogs (I had to take tablets and nasal spray daily and needed an inhaler for when it got really bad - it's mostly gotten better now) I hate people who think everyone should be happy to have their dog around and jumping up at them.

Police are vastly less likely to commit any kind of crime, especially violent crime, than anyone else. Even healthcare workers. Why are people in this country so fucking thick?

Can you do an eye test at one place then go to another place for new glasses?

Posted by Extension_Bit4323@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 47 comments

AnonymousBanana7@reddit

Does 1st level thinning look ok? I have a similar prescription and last time I went to Specsavers they talked me into 2nd level thinning because apparently they'd be really thick otherwise. Had to get smaller lens frame as well because the 2nd level wasn't available with bigger lenses. But I need some new glasses and I'm thinking of getting some bigger ones with level 1 thin.

FYI - Rule update - No LLMs/AI

Not even just people with autism. Literally everything on Reddit gets accused of being AI now. I've been called a bot because I asked someone where they got their laser eye surgery done ?????? The reality is nobody has a fucking clue what's AI and what isn't.

Why do people only support free speech for things they agree on?

Posted by Perfect-Chocolate270@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 32 comments

AnonymousBanana7@reddit

Because very few people in the UK actually hold liberal values or genuinely support free speech. Everyone agrees the government should be silencing offensive and distasteful speech. They just disagree on what's offensive and what's acceptable. The left has largely shunned free speech because up to now we've mostly been criminalising stuff that they want criminalised. We were only targeting the baddies. But now the pendulum of public opinion is starting to swing the other way, especially on certain geopolitical issues, and the people that have been cheering on the government cracking down on nasty words are now upset about it. The whole point of freedom of expression was to avoid this situation. Plenty of people have warned that this would happen - I've been saying it for ages, and I'm quite strongly left wing. But we've been shut down and called racists and fascists. Oh well 🤷

Why are all the chavs I’ve met so friendly? Am I doing something subconsciously?

How much do most people spend on prescription glasses?

Posted by AverageMochiEnjoyer@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 676 comments

AnonymousBanana7@reddit

I've had bad eyes my whole life and I always went to an independent optician. I was telling him for years my vision wasn't right, but he did my tests and said it was fine. I went to Specsavers one time and they changed my prescription. The difference was HUGE. I didn't realise how bad it was before, but if I put on my old glasses now I can hardly see compared to with my new ones.

Has anyone heard of "needling"?

AnonymousBanana7@reddit

I didn't say she's lying for attention. Some of these people genuinely believe it happened to them - that's how mass hysteria works. With the needle spiking epidemic there was the added factor of an easy excuse for getting too pissed - "I was spiked with a needle!" The idea that someone is going round jabbing hundreds of people and not getting caught in the act even once is fucking ludicrous in itself. If it were happening, and they somehow didn't get caught, there would be evidence left behind. Yet somehow, the police have never been able to find any. And on top of that, *it's not how anything fucking works*. Real life isn't a movie where you can stick a needle in someone, push some magic drug into them in half a second and cleanly take it out. Even just trying to stick someone who's dancing or moving will rip up their arm and/or snap the needle.

AnonymousBanana7@reddit

It is a fucking myth that's been going around for years. There was an event in France I think this year where hundreds of people claimed they'd been injected - there wasn't a single confirmed case. There was a period a few years ago in the UK where everyone and their fucking dog was claiming they'd been needle spiked - again, not a single confirmed case.

I don't know how different it is for agencies but I've worked as a HCA/support worker for 3 NHS trust banks and the shortest wait from interview to starting work was over 6 months. Most recent was 9 months. My most recent DBS took about 2 months and they didn't even start with training and uniform until after that had come back.

Do you routinely wipe down gym machines after you use them?

I don't get this. People are so worried about what's on the seats, so they wipe them all down with the same manky sweaty arse towel, then touch the handles with their bare hands and don't even bother giving them a wipe. ???

How to wake up better in the mornings?

Posted by Adorable_Location195@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 193 comments

AnonymousBanana7@reddit

I'm not naturally a morning person at all but I have changed my mindset. I get up at 5:30am to work a 13 hour shift no problem. I could never have done that before. A big part of it really is stop making excuses and accept that you're responsible and can do it. Praise yourself for doing it. It's a big achievement. You'll feel more resilient and more able to deal with things like this as you go on, because you've done it so many times before. And the smaller challenges in life become so much easier because they're nothing compared to what you've already done. Going to the gym either before or after work also helps. But people really don't want to hear that you have to suck it up and do things you don't like doing for a while.

My first girlfriend was fucking nuts and horribly abusive. She was unwell mentally and my life revolved around helping her and keeping her safe, but the psychological abuse and manipulation completely broke me. We were together for 3 years. Broke up 6 years ago and despite lots and lots of therapy and hard work I'm still a shell of who I used to be.
