is 45 minutes considered to be a ‘long’ walk?

Posted by Dry-Advice-9943@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 445 comments

Alcopath@reddit

Depends on your pace, the terrain and the weather. On a summer day on a relatively even road at a decent pace, 45 minutes can feel like a warm-up. If you're power walking up a hill in the rain, that's going to suck.

What quietly disappeared from the shelves in the UK that you now find yourself secretly missing?

Asda's ginger beer disappeared during the pandemic, and I've never seen it since. Gutted, because it's the only thing I can drink dark rum with.

What part of your childhood isn't around any more that you really miss?

I miss those days for a different reason. Having a bunch of single player games that didn't require an Internet connection, and didn't have a load of microtransactions thrown in was awesome. I miss those days.

It's weird reading all these comments about the waste being easily stored underground. I'm 9 miles away from Sellafield, and have seen them spend the past decade trying to figure out where to put 1,200 cubic metres of radioactive sludge and 14,000 cubic metres of contaminated water.

What occupations earn a lot less than most people think?

It's a lot harder to make money as a musician than most people realise. Our 3.8 million plays on Spotify last quarter and didn't even meet the threshold to withdraw any earnings (it came to about £40). It's a 50 mile trip to the nearest venue that'll pay £500 to put a band on, and that money gets put back into fuel, then split between band members. Merchandise manufacturing costs mean the profit margins of a merch stall can be pretty slim. With the amount of money invested into instruments and the amount of time dedicated to learning, writing and practicing songs, it's pretty much guaranteed to work out as less than minimum wage. There'll be the occasional act that signs a multi million dollar deal, but 99.999% of musicians will never break even.

How big are fully grown Teletubbies?

They grow large enough that their stomach screens can be used for cinemas. The TV industry isn't manufacturing these things, they're harvesting them.

I was 19 and lived across the road from Jon Venables for a month or so around 2007-ish (before the revelations of the kind of stuff he was watching/downloading came out). He was living in an upstairs flat in a converted house, and a bunch of people (around 20 of them) found out and kicked his door in, fully prepared to lynch him. The flats had a second inner door which must have been reinforced, because police showed up before anyone was able to do anything.

If you're on a date, would your date living at home affect your opinion of them?

Huh, I never really thought of it as being an issue before. But thinking about it, both women I dated who still lived with their parents (one in their late 20's, the other in their early 30's) did have some certain issues regarding personal accountability and selfishness, which may coincidentally have been fostered by never having the responsibility of looking after their own place. Not sure whether it's directly linked, but does seem like a hell of a coincidence thinking about it now. To answer the question, it doesnt bother me too much, but if I were to do it again I'd definitely be keeping an eye out for other red flags.

Who else just doesn’t like going on holiday?

Alcopath@reddit

Since I'm usually the one taking care of all the planning, organizing travel, and making sure we don't overspend, it's really hard for me to fully relax on holiday. At least when I'm at home I don't have to worry about missing a train or losing a wallet standing me hundreds of miles from where I can sort everything out.

What's the current major drama where you live that in the grand scheme is relatively mundane?

It's meant to be an insult, referring back to the days when the coal mines were open. Miners would eat jam sandwiches because a) coal dust diminished their sense of taste and jam was one of the few things strong enough they could taste, and b) miners were from poorer backgrounds and often couldn't afford meat in their sandwiches. So calling someone a 'jam eater' is supposed to imply they're a working-class poor.

Saw a small box of oreo cereal for £4.60 today. Probably only three or four servings in it. The only other time I've ever seen cereal that price was back when shops would import Lucky Charms and jack the price right up to £5.

About a dozen times a month I'll go for a 3 to 5 mile walk. Other than that, all the exercise I really get is doing the gardening and playing drums
