What places in the UK which aren’t really famous are worth to visit?

Hello! I am leaning English and really interested in British culture and life. There are many famous places to visit as London, Stonehenge and etc., but I know that in my home city there are a lot of less touristic but still amazing sites. Maybe you could tell me about such places you know?

You can easily walk between the two to make the most of a visit, a nice canal side stroll or hike over the hills via Stoodley Pike are recommended! Both towns have a good market and plenty of nice pubs, there are better restaurants in Hebden. Moved here from Manchester and have loved every minute

The Royal Armouries in Leeds. It has an amazing collection of artefacts including suits of armour from the Mongols, Henry V at Agincourt, the Samura; swords, artillery, machine guns. It really is fantastic and it's free!

The best places that i have visited that are beautiful are Luton, Ipswich, Peterborough, Slough, Reading, Southend, Dundee, Aberdeen, Scunthrope, Hull, Bradford, Preston, Burnley, Middlesbrough, Sunderland, Stoke on Trent. Wonderful places full of beauty and art, you'll love them

Even the places with awful reputations generally have something good about them. Hull is massively underrated and there’s lots to see and do there - very much worth a visit. Similarly Bradford has lots worth seeing and has some very wealthy and attractive environs, even if a lot of the city itself is awful. Places like Slough, less so.

Dundee is a wonderfully cool city with great nightlife, excellent independent shops, a wonderful beach, 5 castles, a couple of really interesting museums, some excellent food. A bit rough around the edges yes but there's lots to see and do here. A good base for exploring this part of Scotland too - St Andrews, the Angus glens, Dunottar, Sidlaws, and lots of other places.

Oh I wouldn't go that far! Reading is fine: maybe stop off for an hour on the way to a destination like Oxford or Bath, but doesn't have anything unique enough to warrant a dedicated visit.

Eyam plague village Derbyshire plus Dovedale stepping stones. Bourton on the Water in the Cotswolds is one of my favourite places it's absolutely beautiful, great tiny shops, museums. Walberswick in Suffolk amazing history and incredible houses. Laxton in Nottinghamshire and the Welbeck estate. Mousehole in Cornwall.

The [Forbidden Corner](https://www.theforbiddencorner.co.uk/) is an enormous folly in the middle of nowhere in North Yorkshire. You have to book. Takes a whole day to get around. Be sure to check out the gents' toilet in the carpark. Northumberland is big, empty and full of stuff to do and see. Bamburgh Castle, Cragside, Alnwick Castle, Alnwick Garden, Holy Island, Hadrian's wall and loads of other Roman stuff. Gets a fraction of the number of visitors of rainy nextdoor Cumbria.

I’m off to the Forbidden Corner for the first time on Saturday. Don’t usually follow recommendations to go the the gents toilets, but you seem harmless enough! There’s loads to do up here! Visit Whitby or Staithes for a seaside town, walk parts of the Cleveland way, Beamish in County Durham is great, York, Durham or Newcastle are all fantastic places, test your eyesite at Barnard Castle or visit some of the small towns in the north York moors. The list goes on and on, the north east is great (if you can drive)

I used to live just ten minutes away from there, we’d cycle there along the C2C pretty much every weekend because you buy one ticket and it covers you for the year. Love that place, going to take my dad to see the 1950s village since he’s now old enough to have his decade classed as history!

Is it worth going as an adult? My grandma took me when I was a kid and I remember bits of it I think but it's a bit vague, do you walk through a big eyeball or something to get in? Then there's loads of statues and stuff and a stone hallway that gets smaller and smaller so only kids can get through end?

Northumberland is really beautiful, I believe Alnwick castle was something to do with Harry Potter,I’m from the north of England, there are so many amazing places. If you want old cities ,Chester or York. If you want to eat or go drinking Liverpool,I’m told hebden bridge is really nice. Several national parks,Peak District, Lake District etc..

As someone from Berwick, as lovely as it is I wouldn't suggest moving there unless you are ok with the lack of Dentists, mediocre healthcare and the nearest A&E being an hours drive away, 40 under blue lights by ambulance. As pretty as it is, it's got too many downsides that make it worth it.

On a serious note it’s a shame because it truly is a lovely part of the country, it’s the beaches that draw me in, although the amount of dead birds on Spittal beach last week was slightly worrying!

They are building a new hospital but it won't have an A&E just a Minor Injuries which we have atm anyway. So still the long trip down to Cramlington. There is a bad case of Bird Flu going around the UK atm and with there being more seagulls than humans in the area its more obvious.

Nobody comes to the North East of Scotland - but there’s a castle south of Peterhead called Slains Castle - Bram Stoker summered close by regularly and it’s considered the inspiration for Draculas castl - it’s on the edge of dramatic, rocky cliffs and is well worth a visit!

A couple of years ago I stayed in a holiday cottage in Cruden Bay a few miles from Slain's castle. You can go for nice walks along the dunes and beaches, visit the castle, get fantastically fresh fish and chips from fish landed that morning at Peterhead or Fraserburgh just up the coast, and even have a swim in the sea if you feel like a bracing dip.

Glovers fish and chips up in Fraserburgh do a great breaded haddock supper, the chips are crispy on the outside and soft in the middle, so good. The vans that go about the smaller villages are good too if you can catch one when it's there. Dolphin in Macduff is a bit further away but also good, and has slightly more of a soft chip-shop chip and their batter is good. Such a shame about the birds :( they're still washing on shore sadly.

Last time I went there, I stopped at Grannies Heilin' Hame - a mobile caravan so cool it's got literal prehistoric ruins in the car park! 30 metres from the ma-hooooosive beach, and about 6 miles up the road, an intact stone prehistoric roundhouse just lounging there casually in a field at the side of the road. Love NE Scotland!

The north Norfolk coast is not usually on overseas tourists' radar, but it's a really beautiful part of the country. Some amazing beaches, lovely countryside and small villages and towns. Norwich is also one of the UK's underrated cities.

Unpopular opinion perhaps, but it's about the worst stretch of coast in Britain. Without exaggeration everything from Weymouth clockwise to Hull is far prettier. And that's without even mentioning the epic Scottish Islands. Its pretty sure, but its dull as dishwater compared to Dorset, Devon, Cornwall, the spectacular Welsh coastline etc etc

I was there two weeks ago. Beautiful part of the country. There's a beach that is a seal sanctuary and you can stand in the water while they are fishing around you (without getting too close ofc), which I thought was the coolest thing.

I'm from Bracknell. It is almost unrecognisable compared to when I grew up there, but they're ripped whatever little small soul it had out, in favour of cheap fake veneer and ticky tacky development that us clearly trying to be posh and nice, but isn't quite right. A bit like furniture or interior decorations from Home Bargains, it looks OK but isn't as good and won't last.

I'm not sure how much I'm allowed to reveal but basically there was an arts council CPP called Home Slough, which had Slough CVS as its parent company. SCVS constantly fudged the money, blocked payments to freelancers (some people didn’t get paid for 3 months), bullied HS staff, and were receiving a salary for their director from HS money despite him doing nothing for the project. Arts Council received reports of all this, and basically were so sick of dealing with it all that they just shut down the project entirely.

I love that they're both built on the same road, and the Catholic one was built on a raised platform so it would be roughly the same height. They didn't want either one to be more prominent than the other. The fact that the two Bishops in the 70s and 80s were such close friends is a lovely thing too, especially when the government were trying to divide us.

Darley Abbey, in Derby, is home to a number of mills built in the 18th Century. Lovely place, down by the river Derwent. There's Darley Park close by too which houses the UK's national Hydrangea Collection. Further North, up the A52 you will get to Ashbourne and the Peak District. Ashbourne is lovely, though can be a bit touristy. The Peak District is home to many limestone caves and caverns and is one of the few places in the world where the mineral fluorite, known locally as _Blue John_, is found.

I would say don't bother with Stonehenge. You can only see it from afar through a fence unless you pay an extortionate amount of money to see it a bit closer. I may be a little biased, but the Westcountry is absolutely worth a visit. Going to Dartmoor and finding a quaint little cafe serving cream teas is a joy. But then I also have to mention the one thing you must do when you come this way. On the 5th of November the small town of Ottery st. Mary gets filled with crowds to watch people run through the crowds while carrying flaming barrels of tar on their backs. No. I'm not joking or exaggerating. Nor are there any barriers between the spectators and the participants. If you don't want to get burned you have to move out of the way, and you'll soon find that no matter how difficult it is to move in a crowd, there is *always* more room when a man is running at you with a barrel of fire. I've been multiple times, and if anyone is visiting during that time, I always recommend they check it out at least once.

Hawkstone Park in - erm - Shropshire I think - is well worth a visit in a nice day. It’s a Victorian era folly park with some quite extensive man made cave systems. Take a torch! Haddon Hall is a a fascinating Tudor castle near the much more famous Chatsworth house in Derbyshire. You might recognise it from several films, including The Princes Bride (lots of other film locations in the area too).

Ironbridge Gorge. I suppose it's a bit famous but it's still underrated. It's a World Heritage Site in Shropshire, a 50-minute drive west of Birmingham. There are ten museums; Ironbridge is widely considered to be the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution, and the red Iron Bridge spanning the gorge was the first bridge in the world to be made out of cast iron. Second the Forbidden Corner, it's awesome. I wouldn't say it takes a whole day to get around, but you can spend a few hours there. Longleat is also good, there is a cool maze. Hay-on-Wye is a nice small town on the border on England and Wales, known as the town of books, it has loads of bookshops and an alternative/old hippie vibe. There are lots of old villages and towns on the north coast of Yorkshire, Staithes, Robin Hood's Bay and the bigger towns like Whitby and Scarborough. Loads more but those are off the top of my head.

Thursford steam museum - they also have a Christmas show which pretty much always sells out. Norfolk tank museum and the muckleburgh collection are worth visiting if you are interested in the military. Malham Cove in Yorkshire is an impressive place to see. Blue John caverns in Derbyshire, there's a few good walks in this area if that's your thing. Driving from Fort William to Mallaig on the west coast of Scotland - the road is a nice drive with great scenery.

In Alnwick, home to Alnwick castle, a 1000 year old castle featured in several movies (inc harry potter), there is one of the largest second hand bookstores in the UK, Barter Books. I'm British and i honestly don't understand why americans in particular think that stonehenge is a 'must see'? I know its ancient and one of our biggest and well known stone circles but i think it was quite dull and i'm not going to rush back and see it again. Many of the little traditional villages all over the land aren't particularly well known but are generally very pretty and some, like Eyam in Derbyshire, even have very unique histories that are good for a visit.

I think Avebury is better to visit than Stonehenge..it’s bigger and there’s a village inside it. Don’t bother with Buckingham Palace Corte Castle in Dorset is a good one as is Caerphilly Castle. 3 cliffs bay on the gower peninsula has to be seen to be believed.

Going to focus on the county in which I live, Dorset! You’ve got UNESCO World heritage site the Jurassic Coast… which includes the fairly famous Durdle Door, Kimmeridge (fossils everywhere!), and Lulworth Cove. There is the towns of Bournemouth and Poole, Dorchester and Lyme Regis to explore. The Cerne Giant is a point of interest, as is Tyneham Ghost Village and Corfe Castle. I grew up in Hampshire but moved to Dorset and it is elite here !!!

The Black Country Living Museum, I feel its famous but not as it should be. It gives a really good insight into life in specifically turn of the 20th century Britain but more broadly life in an industrial town. It's a fun day out and kids always love the sweet shop, boat rides and mines. They have also now introduced a section focusing on life 50 years later looking at a late 50s street. On and a lot of the outdoor Peaky Blinder scenes are filmed here so bonus for tv buffs.

The tour through the old mine is amazing and really makes you appreciate just how hard working in mines was. I went to the Black Country museum when I was 10/11 and it was really really cool. I might be misremembering but I’m pretty sure we changed up some modern money into the money from that era that we spent in the sweet shop and stuff they had there. It’s been a long time since then but I remember it being really immersive and a very good day out. Could be talking total shit though because I can’t remember what I had for breakfast this morning so 2 decades is a bit of a stretch.

The best reason to go to Chatham is to look at rope. The historic dockyard has a 1/4 mile ropemaking building where you can see them making it in the same way that Lord Nelson's navy did.

Kinver Edge and the Rock Houses, near Stourbridge in the Midlands. A beautiful part of the world, and some really interesting old houses carved into the rock of the hillside. There's also a bronze age hill fort at the top of the edge, and a "witches cave" called Nanny's rock which is worth taking the hike to see, but be aware it's not a short walk!

Winchester - ancient town centre with incredible cathedral. Stroud area - Stroud itself isn’t particularly inspiring but the surrounding area is gorgeous, e.g. Painswick, Minchinhampton Common, Nailsworth. Woodchester is really interesting. Suffolk coast - Aldeburgh, Orford Ness, Minsmere Kent - all of it! There’s beautiful little towns everywhere, e.g. Cranbrook, Canterbury, Faversham, Sissinghurst, Sandwich plus rolling hills, ancient woodland, dramatic cliffs and golden beaches. I don’t know why more people don’t go there instead of joining the Cornish traffic jam.

Drove past Stone Henge on the way home from Wookey Caves thinking it would be an easy two birds with one stone sort of thing but the entrance now has paid access and a coach ride to get to the site. It was also near closing time - I didn't even know it had opening hours. Saw it by chance from a distance on the drive home as we went past it - it really wasn't all that and I'm glad we didn't go to see it up in person.

Depends what you like! I am a South West girl but if you want art, live music, street art, pirates, industry or vegan food then head to Bristol. For picture-perfect buildings, local crafting and probably one of the most unique Cathedrals, visit Wells. If you like magik, spiritualism, healing and shiny rocks go to Glastonbury (also if you like the fun kind of mushrooms). Bath is full of Roman history, Georgian architecture and has some beautiful walks. You can’t beat Cornwall for beaches, especially if you like to surf. Weymouth is also great! Finally, I have a huge soft spot for the Isle of Wight. Its a very unusual and unique experience to have an island you can drive the length of easily in an hour or two. Crazy good for fossils!

Northumberland 100%. You’ve got Berwick on the Scottish border, Alnwick Castle & Gardens (where they filmed the first few Harry Potter films external scenes), Bamburgh castle & the beach there, Alnmouth it’s all beautiful. Then of course Hadrian’s walk, Sycamore Gap for some Roman vibes. The North East of England is such a great place to visit and we don’t get enough tourists from overseas. I’d recommend a 5 trip to the north east, 1 night in Newcastle & 4 nights plodding around Northumberland.

It isn’t completely unknown, but my favourite spot in London is St Dunstin in the East. It is a stunning hidden spot, typically just pigeons and locals eating lunch with the occasional bridal shoot. Another tucked away spot in London is Hideaway Coffee in Soho. It’s down a little alley in a courtyard with a chocolatier and a few shops. It’s another popular spots for lunch or coffee for people who work in the area, but I love how it feels like you’ve left London and entered some little village back there.

Everyone knows about the Natural History Museum, but not many people know about it's baby version in Tring. It's owned/run by the same organisation but it has a lot of bits and pieces from the Rothschild collection and other cool stuff not exhibited in the London site. It's also extremely child-friendly and a lot less overwhelming than the London museum. I spent a lot of time there as a kid. (There's also a hilariously bad taxidermy lion near the exit towards the gift shop, he's very funny.)

Lacock in Wiltshire - lovely historic village with an Abbey; it has been preserved well and is often used as a filming location (Harry Potter movies as one example). Also Stow-on-the-Wold and Gloucester cathedral are favourites of mine (some Harry Pitter scenes were also filmed in the cathedral coincidentally). And Shrewsbury in Shropshire has some fantastic mediaeval buildings and lovely independent shops, and is near to the Ironbridge gorge.

The Williamson Tunnels in Liverpool. If I get the story right, a rich railway magnet wanted to keep men returning from WW1 busy and in employment. He set them to work digging heat big tunnels all under the Edge Hill area of Liverpool. The tunnels had no purpose or direction. He just kept the men digging the tunnels and paying for the cost of it out of his own pocket.

Tunnels beaches, Ilfracombe, are pretty nice. I was there about two weeks ago. Also took a boat out to Lundy island, we didn’t set foot on the island just went around it on the boat, saw loads of seals, a porpoise and a pod of dolphins

Not all of them are amazing quality or take hours to do, but almost every single local museum is worth visiting to give you a new perspective on British culture. I’ve lived in the UK my whole life but my experience in my town vs even the next town over is drastically different. People often lump ‘the industrial north’ together, the trades are all wildly different; the cotton mills of Manchester vs the shipyards of Newcastle or the mines or Durham. I’ve been to about 10 old mines across the UK and they are all different, from Beamish pit, to Big Pit in Pontypool, to Greevor Tin mine in Cornwall, to Honister slate mine (before it was just extreme sports) to Wheal Martin Clay mine and they all are so unique and also provided a unique way of living for the locals. I’ve lived in three different coastal towns, one Navy, one shipyards, and one touristy. Basically, the UK has a largely cohesive industrial past, but individually all had very different experiences that means going to almost any town will offer you something new to learn.
