What part of your childhood isn't around any more that you really miss?

If you're over 30 things are so different from what they used to be. What do you miss from those days that isn't around any more? (It could be shops, technology, people, sports clubs etc)

I feel like life was a lot more joyous in the 2000s. I'm not just saying that because I'm older now. Stuff like toys or CDs or video games in cereal boxes and actual plastic toys in McDonald's Happy Meals (also Burger King and KFC still doing kids meal toys). Movies were more exciting because things like Harry Potter, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, DC and Marvel were still somewhat new and hadn't been milked to death. Woolworths having toys, games, films, music, clothes, books, stationery, home, gardening, food, etc. all under one roof. Toys R Us still existing as massive megastores. Being able to go to different stores to trade in games and get different ones instead of it only being Cex. Arsenal being at the top was a regular thing instead of a shocking thing that happens rarely.

Yeah he got diagnosed with cancer that had gone too far for treatment and died a month after he posted his last video :( I'm glad he got to be loved once more on YouTube by random strangers for about 8 years before he died. I remember lots of news places and tv channels wanted to interview him and other companies wanted to make adverts with him. He refused because he didn't want that publicity and just wanted to talk to his "friends" on YouTube. I think he only did an interview or 2 with the BBC.

I was a kid in the 60's. You could walk to every kind of shop you needed. There were places to play out, even though you really shouldn't play there such as the cemetery and Wakefield rugby league ground.

The greed element seems to have really got out of hand lately. It feels like you can't do anything without someone feeling like they're owed some money for you doing it. No one seems to just have a hobby these days, its all a "side-hustle". Even people you have a common interest with it immediately comes down to who can make the most off the other. I also agree about the Americanisation of a lot of the culture but do think these aren't truly related. The greed element seems to a massive over extension of something that was/is very British. It was always there I guess, but as an undercurrent that only showed up occasional, now it feels like the dominate force and it really stands out when you have those rare moments where its absent.

I recognised this in myself a little while ago and hated myself for it. I'm now actively trying to go the other way, simplifying my life and start doing things just for the joy of it. I'm happier for it, and it's opened my eyes to so many other things. I started foraging as a way to be more in touch with nature, that's lead me to making wines and jams which I trade with people for things like eggs, other jams and cheese. I wouldn't go back, but I do occasionally find myself back in that keeping up with the Joneses thought process, I just have to remind myself why I'm not doing it anymore

Hell, I miss my social life from before covid... It never really recovered, and then we had a baby. Babies seem to be the death knell of your social life. But back when I was a kid/teenager, I loved seeing my friends every day at school/college. I guess the other things I miss are the sense of optimism about the future that the late 90s and early 2000s had.

Was saying this to my wife the other day. Pre COVID, we used decide on a whim, that we’d be throwing a house party in 3/4 weeks time, ping out some invites and be sure that 25+ people would show up. We now don’t even entertain the idea of throwing a party because we’d be lucky to get 6 or 7 people.

Me neither. My best friend is chronically late for everything. I used to tell him to meet at half 6 and I'd purposely arrive at 7 and still have wait half an hour for him. Insects. You could go out and find lots of varied and interesting insects to look at. Or tadpoles, or newts, or see the occasional hedgehog. And huge flocks of sparrows/starlings. They just aren't around any more and it is awful.

We have a murmaration on the moor near my house every year. It’s a magnificent sight and at dusk hundreds of people turn up to watch them. One of their roosts is the hedges above the stone walls behind my house and while they’re here the noise is so loud you can’t hear yourself think.

I used to spend a lot of time doing that too. I see less caterpillars, tadpoles, slugs and those little red spider mites. I see more variation of lady birds and possibly spiders. There seems to be more ants now and more magpies. All just anecdotal though.

I think we might have all your slugs. We are plagued with them. They are my chili pepper plant's number 1 enemy. Somehow they get in the house too. My dad's always on about me about cutting down the small trees that kind of crowd my small garden, but he's obsessed by cutting down trees for some reason. I won't do it because we get loads of birds, there were 3 nests that I know of just in our small garden. I don't have a lawn, just plants (and some a bit unkempt) and the birds seem to love them.

This is one of the few environmental issues where even a single person can make a difference (if you're lucky enough to have a garden). I put a pond in my parents' garden and the frog and toads have reappeared, along with dragonflies. My mum makes log heaps and now we have hedgehogs. Growing flowers can help with bee numbers. All is not lost in this area. Although we have seen pretty catastrophic insect decline.

Good point. I took the gravel board off the bottom of our garden gate because it was catching on the paving. Few days later we had hedgehogs in our garden and now we feed them etc. they just couldn’t get in before.

I'm really lucky that our back garden is part of the hedgehog highway for local hedgehogs. They come into the garden under the gate, and they've dug under the fence on either side so they can get in to both neighbouring gardens from ours. We have a wildlife camera to record them, and they are so delightful. This summer we discovered they are also visiting the front garden, during a tidy up we found one sleeping in some undergrowth. We live on a housing estate about 15 mins walk from the centre of town, we are very lucky to have hedgehogs visit us.

43 year old. - freedom and boredom I really see this in my kids, but being bored and having to put some personal effort into entertaining yourself doesn’t exist anymore when everyone has access to instant entertainment. I recall at age 10 having the freedom to ride my bike anywhere I felt within a few miles radius of the house. Would go and knock on the doors if my friends - unplanned and uninvited and we would just find something to do. I think a lot of kids are actually a little afraid of going on such adventures.

I think the first two are intertwined. I passed my test in 2001 (good god that makes me feel old) and I *loved* driving. The roads were a lot less busy than they are now, queueing was comparatively rare, and bombing round in a little tinpot Italian hatchback from the 80s powered by a tiny carb fed engine (complete with manual choke) was just a joy. Plus there were still loads of old carburetted cars around and they all smelled magic running rich on a cold morning. Conversely, driving a far more sophisticated and capable car now (a modern EV) is an absolute drudge, because actually getting to *drive* is a rarity. The roads are so congested, and poorly managed, that joy from 20 odd years ago has gone and it's now just a complete chore to get anywhere. Also, from my childhood, I can still remember the incredible sound of Deltics accelerating out of stations. What an absolute bloody marvel those machines were.

Hobbies that aren't publicised. It coincides with the new internet and boom in social media. I used to like collecting retro games and consoles, I could go to charity shops and pick up games for a few quid, then play them and build my collection. This was my hobby, had no real reason for it other than I enjoyed the process on the weekends; go out shopping and buy a random old NES game to play, or something. Occasionally have mates over to play some old school multiplayer like NBA jam or bomber man. Never had any desire to make money from it or use my collection to create a one person TV show (YouTube channel) and become internet famous. Now every square inch of the retro games hobby has been uncovered, dissected, valuation applied, and opinions and ratings stamped. It's like everything has to be uncovered and monetised. I can see this has happened with many other hobbies too, ones that would only dwell in specific forums or at local meets, classic cars meets, dungeons and dragons. It's great everyone is now getting to experience these things but I think 90% of the people are in it for the money or the clout and will move onto the next fad.

This is basically “I hate big companies making money, which is their only purpose and that I helped to create by consuming their product” If people like them and consume their content, then they grow. When growing and if they are successful, they become massive corporations… if they’re massive corporations, they’d make billions. I don't mean to be disrespectful, just curious. Visiting less sites you reckon it is a me problem or a global problem? And is it really an internet problem or is it just plain and simple growing up? Could be that when you were young you were into e.g. grunge music, usa basketball league, train models and eagle spotting? Now you've grown up, free time shrank to a minimum so you just don't have the time to stay close to those topics? As I'm pretty sure there's so much more content available nowadays than back then.

Nah it's not just me, as you'll see from other comments below mine. Using the internet was just a very different experience in the mid 00s. It was so much less centralised. I wouldn't say my interests are any less diverse than they were when I was younger. The difference is that the content now is much more centralised. Yes, there's more of it. But it's all contained in a handful of places.

Back in my day you had web rings. At the bottom of the page you could click an arrow left or right and it would take you to a related page, or you could skip ahead. I found many a page about Redwall (the books) with that method in ~1998. But you tell kids these days and they don't believe you.

In the late 90s at least, web rings had relevance because search engines weren’t that great. It was an easy way to find related content. Who remembers using 3 or 4 search engines to find stuff? Then Yahoo bought the main web ring site in the early 2000’s and decided they weren’t relevant anymore. I worked for various internet companies (including Yahoo for a short time) during the late 90’s to mid 2000’s time and it was very interesting to see how the web developed and grew from that perspective.

Do you remember the old Redwall website? I had a rush of nostalgia and tried to look it up again the other day but it's now just a listing of the books and an obituary of the author. I remember it only vaguely, but it was very interactive in a 90s/00s way and I feel like the design of it was the art from the early books. There may have also been a recipes section?! I love how the old internet just threw anything vaguely relevant at the wall.

I just loved the privacy during my youth. It was such a tranquil world where things weren't recorded and people weren't so on edge. Mobile phones were lucky to have cameras, let alone internet (born 1987). The internet was just a place you'd go to find out about things or to explore. It wasn't so perfect and that's what made it beautiful. Websites were what we would call retro, today. Flashing font, lack of styling, terrible layout, it was great. Today, the internet is world's apart. People care way too much about keeping up with the Jones's. Privacy no longer exists, and the world has gone backwards, imo. With home CCTV, Ring Cameras, Dash Cams, and cameras in people's pockets, it feels like we are constantly being monitored or a mistake away from being recorded and uploaded on the internet where it'll be forever. Life was so much more simpler and calmer back then and I certainly miss it.

When I was a child growing up in the 1970s, a 'mobile library' (huge van fitted out with shelves and thousands of books) would visit my nan's cul-de-sac once a week. It was my job to change my nan's library books as she couldnt walk to the van and back. She only wanted to read the Mills and Boons and, of course, didn't want to have the same one twice. So, she'd mark the ones she'd read with a special symbol she's invented for herself - writing it on the inside cover. However, all the old ladies in the village wanted Mills and Boons too, were sending people to the van in their stead, and had also marked the books with strange old-lady symbols. I had to scrutinise dozens of hieroglyphs in many books each week to find a book my nan hadn't yet seen. I wonder if there are mobile libraries still doing the rounds anywhere.

Check out /r/libraries. It's mostly librarians who post there. They are outraged by current efforts to censor books. Librarians today subscribe to a code of ethics that requires openness. They no longer believe in stopping kids from reading "adult" books.

There was one that visited my village one day a week. Due to Covid, they stopped letting people get on the bus, and instead you told them what kind of books you like, and they picked for you. So I never actually used it, just got the bus into town instead. If I’d been able to return my books there and they got sent back into the network from there, I’d probably have made some use of it

In the US these are called bookmobiles. I just checked, and found out that my city library system operates one bookmobile in addition to 13 "brick and mortar" libraries. The bookmobile operates on a biweekly schedule and visits about 25 locations, in addition to schools. Many of the locations are at senior living centers. I have never used one myself, which is why I had to look it up.

The library in my parents town is in a really perfect building. The rooms are all the right size for the books, there are little nooks with chairs for quiet reading, the computers are tucked away in a quiet little corner, there’s smaller room for organised activities (e.g. kids summer book challenge). Unfortunately, a balcony in the biggest room has structure problems. They had to get rid of the shelves on it at don’t let anyone walk up there anymore. The local council say that the library isn’t used enough to justify spending the money repairing it. They’re moving it into an old Peacocks shop. A really small shop with a single room. I can’t imagine it being pleasant or cozy at all. Nobody will want to go and hang out there to read. My conspiracy is that this is there quiet way of stopping people going, and then they can close it down with stats to back up that people don’t use it.

No matter the weather we would sit in the field freezing, no phones, just laughing and getting drunk off MD 20/20. Cameras that you had to take to the shop to get developed. Toys R Us Circling toys in the Argos catalogue. MSN Habbo Hotel School - even though (I thought) I hated it at the time. School summer holidays that felt like 3 months instead of 6 weeks. I wiped the floor with their entire clan on a S&D lobby, and being a girl, it messed with their heads at the time. I got shit talked for a few games, some very harsh messages, we eventually joined a party and the rest is history - they're still my best gaming friends to this day 😂😂 Wouldn't happen today, and especially not on the current format as you get new players every match. But MW2/3/Black Ops era was absolutely my favourite. Original MW2 remains my all time favourite CoD, had some of the best times playing then and I'm grateful to have made the friends I have through it.

When I was growing up, there was a massive convenience store close to my school and a kind tall white man called Baz who was so nice all the time. He was like that with everyone. It's been over 10 years and I'll never forget the day I walked over to the same store to see a poster telling everyone how he passed away and his funeral details was on it. I miss affordable housing, even in reasonably nice areas. A sense of hope and economic growth, and being able to make mistakes without being financially destroyed. Changing careers or moving to new places felt possible, whereas now even a change in electricity bills makes me sweat! I miss seeing the same GP, and even having them make a house call. Cheap cinema and popcorn. Fish n chips being a cheap meal (and yes I know there are good reasons for it costing nearly £20 for a cod and chips near me, but it is still more than I can afford). I miss learning about a new gf or mate by looking at their DVD collection in that huge tower by the TV. Pint mugs with handles and dimples not these shit tower glasses.

There are environmentalist getting upset with the recent re-surgency of stoves and their attendant smokey chimneys. I believe the UK at least is looking at introducing laws around their use/efficiency. I guess similar to the EURO1/2/3/4/5 laws for cars. But its in the more affluent areas where its the biggest problem, like a lot of things, what was once seen as a sign of poverty is now fashionable for the wealthy.

It used to be such a big deal. Then I've only lived in Muslim-majority areas of London since then, and they obviously don't celebrate it. Everyone is out and about, lots more shops are open than there used to be. Hardly any decorations. I kind of forget about it now my family aren't in my life, tbh. When none of your friends celebrate (all Muslim) and it's treated as just another day, it doesn't seem worth bothering with. I'm not Christian so the religious aspect isn't there. I've been thinking about going to Midnight Mass this year. I've never been before. It would make it a special day again.

This is a great question. Sometimes I miss our old family dynamic before everyone moved in different directions for work. I think it would have done my parents good to have lived near their siblings and established friends for their 30s and 40s. It definitely taught me the life lesson in retrospect that there are more important things than work, especially after some of the siblings ended up passing away young with my parents only seeing them about once a year for the years beforehand.

100% we don’t need to be on those apps, but the temptation these days is too much - especially with a powerhouse of a device sitting in my pocket. I deleted them for a while but naturally the way the world now works is that downtime = phone out, I’m totally open to the fact I’ve become addicted to mine. I still see my parents go to work sometimes and forget there’s, or during an evening of entertaining my parents will leave their phones in the kitchen to engage with their guests - unfortunately my generation can’t be in a room without it.

I keep my phone out of my bedroom at night as well so that it's not the first thing I do when I wake up and go to bed. I miss these days too. I did about 14 months off Facebook & Instagram and just used Reddit - and it was good. But Facebook returned because of things like event invites, friends in different countries etc and slowly Instagram followed because they’re so intertwined. Never been a Twitter user so that’s not there. I contemplated getting a Nokia with WhatsApp but ended up just giving in and keeping the iPhone. I always promise to read my book at night… I have not yet read my book at night. The phones are addictive and they’re likely winning at this point 😕😤

Reading has been the saving grace for me. I used to read obsessively as a kid and then lost my way during my teens at some point. Then, last year, I forced my way through a book and it was like I'd relearnt the skill after that. Now I read every night before bed and I actually look forward to it so much that my phone doesn't get missed. I really recommend forcing yourself through that book if you can!

I HATED that. I remember walking back from the pub one night, my friend had just split off as his home was down the road we were passing, and about 10 seconds later the lights went off. Thought it was a power cut until I saw the petrol station a way down the road was still lit up. We had no warning about this new policy (or if we did, it was in the parish newsletter or whatever. We were all newly 18, we weren't reading that.) Had to call my mate and ask if he'd walk me home. After then, none of my male friends ever let me walk home on my own again at night, which I was grateful for but felt guilty about. And that was just pub trips, voluntary. What about people walking home from night shifts who felt unsafe? I mean, a lot of my mates probably didn't feel great about it either anyway.

I encountered milk floats on my first visits to the UK in the 1980s, possibly because jet lag kept me awake, or made me easily awakened at odd hours. There used to be milk delivery in the US also -- I remember it as a kid -- but I think it disappeared sooner there than in the UK. Also, in the US, they didn't use electric vehicles.

I just remember the electric sound of a vehicle which sounded old fashioned & futuristic at the same time 😆. I remember loads of people in our road would get milk and I think orange juice & bread. It’ll never come back I doubt but I’d probably use a service like this.

Father in law was a milkman. Was great as he was always home by 2-3pm although he was always off to work at like 3am. Can do milk and more deliveries now still but it hideously expensive. We had milk delivered when my kids were babies (about 15-20 years ago) but when I went back to work we had to stop it as the delivery time changed to later in the morning so the milk was sat on the doorstep till I got back from work

Fox Kids and the old lineups. The Power Rangers were in the golden age (for me anyway) up until Wild Force stopped airing in mid 2003. I wasn't a big fan of the tone shift and the change in the action after Disney took over. I loved it so damn much and Fox Kids had full weekends of just the Power Rangers airing sometimes. The closest we've had to the old school episodes since has been the Once and Always special and the final season, Cosmic Fury. Even old fans have come back to watch them and loved them. I can't watch the other new seasons, but those two were good. Not perfect. They need better in suit action, but Koichi and his team have long since moved on, which is a huge shame. Woolworths. Used to mostly get my toys there and my dvds. I got my first Jackie Chan film on vhs there. Who am I? I still have it! They always had the most recent Power Ranger VHS as well. I still remember when they released two at the same time and I had to choose between them! Got them both eventually but that was torture!

The film's that I was the perfect age for were such a golden age. Having Aladdin followed by the Lion King and Jurassic Park. Star Wars was re-released before the Prequels came out. Cheesy blockbusters that had a theme tune sung by Will Smith. Becoming a moody teenager and experiencing the Matrix and Fight Club. Cinema is fantastic now, but I feel like the Millennials grew up with such defining films, all of which studios are desperately still trying to milk

I miss Saturday matinee at the pictures in the early 70’s. They were films from the Childrens film foundation, a few cartoons and then a weekly serial to finish or Laurel and Hardy (my all time favourites), it usually lasted 3 hours and parents would go shopping while all the kids were watching the films. The usherettes used walk around with baskets of sweets and throw handfuls into the audience of lively screaming kids for free. I remember that we didn’t think it odd to be left alone in the theatre without a parent because the cinema was run by women. I also miss mambo’s but its almost like a Mandela affect as everyone I talk to about them do not remember them but my family did. They were similar to a jubbly ice lolly but at least 6 inches and triangular and could literally last you all day before melting

Pre-internet, I used to love how movie and VHS releases were big events that you’d really get excited about. That kind of culture doesn’t exist any more because everything is instantly accessible. Sure, you can still get excited about a big movie being released, but the information regarding them now is so vast (with thousands of YouTube channels dissecting trailers etc), that it just isn’t the same. Back in the day, you’d get one trailer on a morning breakfast show that you’d record if you were lucky, and that would be it.

I like that you can stream an album the second it comes out, but I do miss standing outside the shop and waiting for it to open so you could get a physical copy. I think it forces you to listen to N album more closely, especially if it was on cassette. Plus when you got physical singles, there were b-sides to look forward to.

I think it's more about the expectancy from others to be able to contact you whenever. I don't text much anymore because I'm busy with work/hobbies and by the time I get home I don't want to sit texting all night, it's regularly commented on by various people, even after I've explained. On my birthday I was out and didn't reply to any birthday messages until the evening, one friend messaged me regarding our plans for the next day (all of which had been discussed 2 days before) on two other platforms to tell me she'd messaged me on whatsapp.. yes I know but I'm fucking busy. Even got a dig about how correct my whatsapp status is ("expect a response in 5-7 business days") like, that's why it's there!!

I could fill a book answering this, or so it feels sometimes. I miss shopping for something being a big deal. If I was getting a present for someone or I’d saved up for something (and couldn’t get it in the village) it went on The List for the next trip into a nearby town. It made it special, sad as it sounds, rather than just mundane. It was even more of a big deal if it couldn’t be found locally: city time. I remember my parents doing orders by post for tools and things like that: there would be an order form and catalogue in the kitchen for weeks for any requests from the rest of us to go in. I try to shop online as little as possible, but with so many shops closing it is getting harder and harder.

Couple (maybe 5?) years ago I went into the city to do my Xmas shopping, because like you I had this idea in my head that going and getting it in person was more "special". I had a list of roughly the sort of things I wanted to get, which shops would probably have them etc. I walked away with absolutely nothing. No shop in the entire city had anything on my list. At the time the city was known as a bit of a shoppers paradise too. So I gave up and went on Amazon and don't bother nowadays. I firmly believe this is one of the reasons the High Street has failed, because physical shops just don't/can't carry what people want.

My childhood home isn't there anymore, the whole street is gone and it makes me sad nearly every day. I was brought up in the 60's/70's in an old 1840's 2 up 2 down, no bathroom, toilet at the bottom of the garden house. It was a wonderful childhood. The street of 26 houses was the last "slum" area in our town and sited just off of the High Street. We had space, friends, lots of places to play, and I would do it all over again if I could. The street was brought compulsory purchase by the council in the late 70's and knocked down. By the late 90's part of the street was made into a road to bypass the High Street and the other part was turned into a car park. 4 times every day I drive on that road, drive over where my nans house was, look at the car park where my house was, and it does make me sad. It was a wonderful community there and a wonderful childhood.

Trick or treating. Because everyone in my neighbourhood is all grown-up now, there's less trick or treaters around. It's natural to grow out of that activity. Halloween used to be the best time of the year aside from Christmas. Now it's completely un-special and that makes me sad. Apart from that. I miss when there were no e-scooters around to deal with. They're dangerous on the pavements. I miss the lack of deliveroo and food delivery apps- people used to get food themselves. Keep in mind I am only 23 so other than everything mentioned and post-pandemic changes, my area probably hasn't changed much since I was little. (Even though I obviously have changed a lot myself)

Terrestrial TV being the norm for most people so it meant everyone pretty much watched stuff at the same time and speed as everyone else. It gave a huge sense of community i felt. The fact that you knew basically everyone watched Britains got Talent because streaming services hadn’t really taken off yet. When the Friday/Saturday night film on tv would be actually decent and was a good chance you hadn’t seen it. Gave everyone something to talk about at work/education.

My childhood dog Robbie. He was a golden retriever and ever since we had him I have dreamed of having another one. He is the blueprint of every perfect dog I can imagine. We got him when I was 7, we had just moved from a crummy flat to our first ever house as a family and my parents took me to his breeder to “see the puppies”, when they told me I could pick one to take away that day I felt pure joy. He passed when I was in my first year at university and I remember my mum calling me to let me know, just floods of tears and the feeling that my childhood was truly over. A very dear friend of mine took me to the pub and we had a toast in his honour. I don’t believe in heaven but if I did, I would get there and he would be bounding over the fields to come and say hello again.

I've recently moved, when I got here the local shop closed for lunch and didn't open on Sundays. As much as it was annoying when it caught it you out, it really reminded me of my childhood where this was the norm everywhere. Since I've been here the shop has changed its hours, and its open from 08.00-19.30 and most of Sunday morning. I guess its a positive step, but it really feels like a loss. It was somehow charming if inconvenient, now its blandly convenient just like everywhere else. I find myself wishing they'd left it as it was.

Don’t even need to be over 30 to see huge changes. I I’m 22 and during my childhood days, every kid on the estate would meet up on the field for a match of footy practically every day Now when I visit my parents, the field is empty. So much so that council have removed the large goal posts which we all used. Heck, seeing kids in general around the estate just isn’t common anymore One of them things I look back on quite often. Great to know I was born early enough to experience something kids today haven’t really experienced. I’m sure they’re making their own great memories on what ever console they’re playing, but I can’t see it being as memorable as meeting up with your mates and playing with that half deflated football you found under a car before booting it into a bush for the next day you meet up

Just being able to go outside and within 5 minutes, there were 12 other kids playing football or Pokemon together. That just doesn't happen anymore, I feel the current young generation have missed out, the late 90s and early 2000s were a great time to be a kid. I like gaming, been doing it as long as I can remember, but I feel sad that kids today won't look back as fondly at memories of just playing Fortnite as I do playing football with every kid on the street, regardless of whether they were 5 or 15 years old, it didn't matter. Buying physical copies of games. I have a dresser in my man cave with three shelves of PC games accumilated since I got my first computer in 2000. There was something special about opening a new game, smelling the smell of new fresh plastic and the shiny paper the manual was printed on, having a look at any extras they included like posters or whatever, then snapping the disk out and watching the install wizard tick up to 100% as the disk drive and hard drive whirred away. STEAM is more convenient but it just isn't the same.

I do still check to see if there's a physical copy available whenever I buy a new game though, but these days it's incredibly rare I buy anything other than an Indie or "AA" game (because holy shit the AAA industry is at rock bottom) and those **never** have a boxed copy available.

Trying and successfully getting away with buying beer and porn mags as a 16 year old. Being able to cycle to all my friends’ houses. Making sure I was home in time to watch Neighbours on TV since “catchup” wasn’t a thing. Waiting months for my favourite bands to release their new albums, having followed their progress in actual physical music mags since internet wasn’t a thing for me until 1998. Seemingly endless summer holidays - they felt like they lasted months when in all likelihood they were only about 8 weeks. Wish I hadn’t squandered them as much as I did, now that as an adult I only get 24 days of annual leave!

I miss the joy and fun of being part of a large family. My mother had an open door policy, so the house was always full of laughter. The Christmas holiday was amazing with decorations, music, family, extended family, and all our friends attending. Now, my mother, the bulk of my aunts and uncles, and even some friends have passed away. The remaining siblings, friends, and family are all in different cities. Christmas now consists of a special breakfast and off to the cinema for a movie.
