Is crossing the channel really that bad?

We did it bank holiday Monday afternoon from Dover to Dunkirk and it was the most queuing we've ever had. Took about 1hr30 from port to getting on the boat which isn't bad at all. Went through check in at 3.30ish and got on the 4pm boat. Honestly never queued for more than about 30 mins before this. I think if you keep it flexible it feels more relaxed. You can get on a ferry 4 hours either side of your booking time (with Dfds for sure at least) so if you are early and make an earlier ferry great and if you are late or the queues are big then no problem either, just book a ticket between the earliest and latest you would prefer. There are toilets and a duty free too so aren't stuck if you are in a car. We get the ferry over the Chunnnel everytime and since we are from quite far away it feels like a nice break in driving so are usually ready to drive a little once we arrive in France.

Is it ok to leave job at 33 to travel ?

I think if it's something you really want you may regret not doing it now. As others have said, life is for living and although not having a job when you return is risky there are ways to mitigate the risk. Make sure you have savings for when you return (a couple months rent/bills) or somewhere to stay. Although it can be hard to find very specific jobs, if you are willing to take anything for money upon your return then there are jobs available and you can take these jobs while you apply for roles you really want to do. And that's assuming you come back at all. Saying that, my brother and his girlfriend have just taken a 6 months sabbatical from an NHS job to travel so that might be an option if you are very concerned. I'm not convinced they will be re ady to return after 6 months though! Definitely look into Australia and NZ working holiday visas if you can. These have cut off ages but if the visa is granted (or possibly just applied for) before you reach the cut off you can still use it. Then you can travel and earn money. I also know people who choose to work for a year and then take time to travel and I myself don't work a regular permanent contract, instead choosing to work multiple 0 hour contracts to provide flexibility. It really depends on you as a person, your goals for the future and how you want your life to look.

If it helps, I have now ordered multiple pairs of glasses, including sunglasses from Firmoo. You can take a picture and 'try on' the glasses and so far they have Ben pretty spot on. Loads of options for customising the lens colour, driving and night stuff etc

How do i use London Stansted airport?

Everyone has answered stuff here but as an added bit of info. If you search YouTube it is very likely that someone will have done a bit of a walk through of the airport and a Ryanair plane. This may help you visualise what you will be seeing.

What is the furthest you’d drive to an airport for a city break abroad?

AdPlus5585@reddit

I drive an hour to an hour and half minimum for an airport. Don't mind driving further for cheaper flights but I do take into account parking fees. The flight has to be significantly cheaper to balance out parking costs as opposed to being able to get a lift/public transport to a closer airport.

Just a heads up... They do request your medical records from your GP. This can either support your prescription or cause it to be rejected and you still pay for the appointment whichever way it goes.

Not OP but I know you can apply online. They will do a video call with you which you pay for and then decide if it suits your needs, if it does, they will prescribe it. You will be prescribed so much per month and then you order it online. You also have to pay for the costs of the prescription. You order from a website with a bunch of different types so you can order what works best for you and it is delivered to your home. It comes in buds. If you do some research online there are quite a few YouTube videos talking about the process in the UK.

Can I shower naked at the communal showers at the swimming pool?

Posted by Old_Ad8751@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 312 comments

AdPlus5585@reddit

Yep! It's expected and tbh it's way more hygienic to shower properly before entering the pool. I also prefer the Icelandic system of not wearing your shoes into the changing rooms and having a drying area of the changing rooms (where the floor is wet) and a dry area. Keeps the floors cleaner than they are in the UK where they get gross!

It's way more normal to be naked in places like this in Europe than in the UK for some reason. Changing rooms at leisure centres and spas I Europe people be drying their fanny with the hairdryer and all sorts. I much prefer the European attitude towards naked bodies, it's chill.

Yeah I suppose that makes sense. I figured obviously some people will use doctors, hospitals, the benefits system etc but this wouldn't necessarily balance out with the amount of children and what it costs them.

That's great, it would be brilliant if all companies offered this as a standard. I feel like it could relieve a small amount of the stress and burn out that people get when caring for loved ones. Even better that there was added discretionary. It doesn't take much to be kind but it means a lot right!

Not sure this makes sense either as a family with children could be just as much of a 'burden' on the government's finances as a child free couple. Assuming this wasn't sarcastic of course.

I am very fortunate with my employer and the annual leave, flexibility and time off supplied without working for them for 10 years. But thanks for the advice. I would agree the parents that I work with seem to be constantly on the go and very rarely seem to get a break and quite often appear to be relieved that their 'break' from their 24 hour a day role is going to work for 12 hours!

I suppose theres a point there of where the question would have come from deep down. I took it as a random question that popped into someone's head (the person who asked also has said no, from the very beginning weirdly). But maybe unfairness was the true reason and they are lying. However, we often have very random hypothetical discussions so it isn't unusual.

This 100%. There should be more guidance, flexibility and allowance for mental health, chronic illness and care giving. People shouldn't have to feel stressed because they are burned out and their mental health is at a crucial point but they can't take some time in fear of losing their job or worrying about finances.

It wasn't even so much suggested as an 'it's unfair' vibe. It was more presented as, 'do you think people who make a choice not to have children, should get the same as people who make a choice to have children'. So far, people have switched between yes and no a number of times, so I thought I'd see what reddit votes.

As a British National who has lived overseas for many years now returning to the UK, what can I use as ID? (See post for context)

Posted by Toddryck@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 32 comments

AdPlus5585@reddit

I regularly forget to take my drivers lisense into stores for ID and have offered the option to view the picture of my passport multiple times and they won't even consider it. Like someone else has said, I get that they really shouldn't even though it's annoying for me. If get another form of identification is not an option then all you can do is be prepared for when you may need your passport and take it with you, then return it to your safe place after. If you get asked for it regularly when purchasing items that require proof of age then you know you are likely to need it each time. If not, you might get away with not taking it on a night out, just be prepared to be turned away from somewhere if it is requested.

I was recently the person being gifted the items and my workplace got me a little laundry bag, some spf 30 moisturiser (which was amazing as the normal body stuff is too greasy for my face), a handheld rechargable fan, some face wipes and some deoderant wipes. There were other bits too but these were the things I took with me.

30 and newly single, what would you do if you had savings and no commitments?

I suppose it depends on what is important to you and what you value. Some people really feel the need to have a typical career and a permanent base and some people prefer the freedom that comes with being able to 'jack it in' and start again and find another job. Obviously finding another job can be harder for some people than others and I suppose there will always be a need to not blow every penny in order to get accomodation and support yourself when you return. How much money you need will differ for each person too. I can't agree that a wealthy and supportive family is a necessity although it definitely sounds like it would be great to have!

I don't disagree with any of that. All of the things I suggested could happen, or they could find it lonely. They could decide to go trialling with a friend. However, from experience I have met a number of people who have met their long term partner while travelling. The thing is, it doesn't need to be permanent, it can just be new and exciting and scary and intense and lonely and sometimes just a bit boring. It's about feeling all those feels and learning how you cope with them. Some people prefer to do this at home or from their solid base and some peoe prefer to travel longer term. Not everyone needs long term careers and some people do. This can also change over time as people change. It was asked what we would do in OPs situation and this is what I would do. I have found travel has previously given me the space, time and perspective to evaluate my current needs and consider medium to long terms plans. The opportunities to reflect can also be beneficial.... For some.

Other options are save all your money for a house deposit and car, d go to work all week to pay for the mortgage and car and have minimal experiences. People are different dude. You can always earn more money. I just l Think imagine saving up loads of money and then something terrible happening, like you get hit by a bus. Never heard of anyone on their death bed being grateful af for the 3 bed semi detached house with a mediocre garden they bought. This person could also travel the world and meet the love of their life, or make loads of friends or meet their new best friend. They could discover new hobbies or a career they would like to begin when their travels are over. But no, save your pennies and buy a house/car, work long hours so you can go to benidorm for two weeks every year 🙌 Do what makes you happy, I just said what I would do. I spoke for experience, I've done it twice, it's amazing.

What uk jobs are there where you work 3 days a week doing 12 - 15 hour days?

Posted by mrvlad_throwaway@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 46 comments

AdPlus5585@reddit

Roles in residential child care often have work 15 hour days. Although most companies do have want sleep shift as well and often work on a two on four off pattern. I have also seen 4 on 8 off work patterns as well. They are tough but it is a nice having a decent block of time off and it is all predictable for the year. Also eats to pick up extra shifts if you want the money. They job is by all means not easy but can be rewarding (although the rewards aren't instant) and if you can keep boundaries, seperate work and life, don't take things to heart and have a good sense of humour then you can strive in the role. Other benefits include food provided when on shift and some days are awesome, like going to football matches or days at the beach!

Something I remember being told as a kid and never questioned, Is this anyone else's logic too?

Posted by TeaSlurpingBrit@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 24 comments

AdPlus5585@reddit

I was told that you shouldn't throw food items out of your car window, even if they are biodegradable, as animals come and eat them and this encourages animals to come to the road for food more often and resulting in them potentially being hit by traffic. I was also told that it reduces animals abilities to hunt or forage for food by themselves and they become more dependent on the scraps they find and therefore dependent on humans. Another reason was that seeds can mean that plants which should not being growing in the area could start to grow.
