What goes on your crumpet ?

I need to settle a debate , what do you put on your crumpet , I'm being called gross as I put Philadelphia on mine apparently strictly jam & butter only 😭
Mistyh0813@reddit
Butter and honey 🍯
HairyStMary@reddit
I had two of those bad boys earlier.
Mistyh0813@reddit
😍😋🧇 round or square ones ?
HairyStMary@reddit
Round. They were cheapo ones from the corner shop. Not as good quality as Warburtons but needs must.
streeturbanite@reddit
this is how my family does it with the moroccan version of the crumpet: beghrir (a flatter, crepe-like crumpet)
Pombot@reddit
Supreme combo! :P
geordieooosha69@reddit
Marmite
Frog_Life2000@reddit
I love a butter + marmite + cheese combo
frog_sweat@reddit
Yes the best! I do mine in the air fryer and it’s fucking incredible
BarkDoggss@reddit
What cheese? I do butter + marmite and never even considered a threesome. Is it cheddar or leicester?
Living-Excuse1370@reddit
Extra mature cheddar.
1182990@reddit
Both work well.
chuffingnora@reddit
Fuck it, let's get crazy and do a 50:50 Cheddar and Leicester combo
1182990@reddit
I mean, crumpets come in packs of 6. You can have a different combo on each one.
chuffingnora@reddit
I'm personally thinking about a quattro formaggi crumpet now. A bold new crumpet world
loopi320@reddit
If you use soft cheese like Philadelphia, it goes soft and melty and gooey which you don’t get with just normal cheese even when it melts. Total game changer once you have had it.
What is the best tho is those giant crumpets, butter, grated cheese, beans then more cheese
PurpleBiscuits52@reddit
Quattro fromaggi for the win
hatter1981@reddit
And a dash of Worcester sauce 🫡
Aaaahfuckit@reddit
Double Gloucester
thenewfirm@reddit
I think cheddar with marmite is the best especially extra mature.
Civil-Gap-6305@reddit
Oooo hello. Butter and marmite definitely but I've never considered cheese. Ye gods!
oojiflip@reddit
I'm in the exact same position lol, trying this tomorrow!
XgisMrs@reddit
Blue cheese is the best it offsets the marmite
Buh_Snarf@reddit
It's good! Try it.
RowRow1990@reddit
I toast the crumpets, butter them and then out them under the grill with cheese so it melts in them.
BppnfvbanyOnxre@reddit
HairyStMary@reddit
Correct. And put Branston pickle on top.
diymuppet@reddit
Marmite & peanut butter. Is amazing.
I'm now considering if I can as cheers to that.
bumblebeesanddaisies@reddit
The only time I like Marmite is with cheese and/or peanut butter!
Arch4n0n@reddit
You've nailed it. I thought it was just me because my wife pulls a face every time I do this, and then tells me I'm a wrongun.
Aggressive-Bad-440@reddit
... What even are you...
owningxylophone@reddit
I’d the marmite with Branston pickle (not a marmite guy), but otherwise this is the correct answer.
Marmite50@reddit
I'm the marmite guy
emitime2@reddit
Butter, Marmite, more butter
thekittysays@reddit
Add a slice or 2 of cucumber and you've got perfection
Books_Bristol@reddit
This is the right way. Strong cheddar-like cheese only. Red Leicester can work.
If I'm feeling fancy, I'll pop a few slices of ripe tomato on top.
AccurateMuffin7@reddit
Butter, bovril and cheddar.
Filthwizard_1985@reddit
This is the way.

Butter marmite and cream cheese is fantastic

Creative-Tomorrow-54@reddit
Butter, soy sauce, banana.
dobber72@reddit
Just butter, it's basically just a transportation device for butter, destination, my mouth. I would just spoon the butter in but I'm not uncouth, so I use crumpets.
Think-Committee-4394@reddit
Optimum butter load for one crumpet
IF crumpet was sufficiently buttered, once crumpet ONE is eaten
There will be enough melted butter on the plate to butter a SECOND crumpet
ScreamingDizzBuster@reddit
Smother in butter. Then smother in peanut butter. The two meld together and drip through the bottom.
Longjumping-Act9653@reddit
Yep this is a dream topping
Willsagain2@reddit
I'd draw the line at Dream Topping.
Longjumping-Act9653@reddit
This has brought back some early 90s memories I didn’t know existed. I wonder if it’ll ever get a nostalgia reboot like Angel delight did
Silver-Appointment77@reddit
I agree. I loved dream topping and gutted its gone. ive never found a replacement for it.
Longjumping-Act9653@reddit
Someone in my replies said they have a pack in the cupboard! Apparently you can still buy it
Silver-Appointment77@reddit
I had a look and seems like only Tesco sells it. We have every other supermarket here except Tesco. Maybes why I havent seen it
rebekha@reddit
You can still buy it. We have a sachet in the cupboard.
pajamakitten@reddit
Unless they bring back the white chocolate Dream bars and you melt those on a crumpet.
Psychological-Web828@reddit
Add a thin layer of mayonnaise to that. You won’t regret.
astateoftrance36@reddit
Exactly how I have mine, have had a few comments at work like why are you putting butter and then peanut butter they just don’t get it…
durkbot@reddit
I had a childminder who did peanut butter and butter sandwiches when I was little and the combo has been a guilty pleasure of mine ever since.
marmaladesardine@reddit
It's the only way - Yum!
DispensingMachine403@reddit
The only correct answer
TheAlmightyProo@reddit
Omg another one like me. I'm not alone anymore.
Seriously though, ppl have side eyed this as long as I can recall but it started in school some 35 years ago and so to date is my longest running favourite snack. Crumpet toasted until just slightly crisp outside, well buttered, thin but definite later of PB on top (preferably crunchy) I usually have as many as the toaster can accommodate (and yes, it's a major reason for my having a four slice model)
Goes great with a choc, nana or vanilla shake btw.
Nutella, yeast extract (not marmite, there's better) or just buttered are also great on a crump but none half so perfect as the PB option. Never jam though, it's hideous and made of snails (long story but it literally makes me gag just seeing or smelling it)
RevolutionaryPace167@reddit
Wash out your mouth 😜
BeccasBump@reddit
With butter.
RevolutionaryPace167@reddit
😁😅😆
Royal-Principle6138@reddit
Then mop up the rest off the plate
PublicOppositeRacoon@reddit
I get that you enjoy this, but I had to downvote. Because I can allow people their styles and likes, but peanut butter is one step too far.
riddleparadiddle@reddit
Good grief
Ok-Duck7554@reddit
This is the way. And the butter must be fully melted, and the crumpet be toasted until properly brown; I will not sanction a limp or tepid crumpet.
soopertyke@reddit
Crunchy outside layer . Just had one
Nonbinary_Cryptid@reddit
In my house, the butter left on the plate belongs to my cat. She's got her face in it before I'm finished eating, as soon as I lift up the last crumpet. It's a good thing that she is cute.
thestumpymonkey@reddit
Not to be a party pooper, but butter is bad for cats, especially salted. It’s high in fat and it’s also contains lactose, neither of which are good for cats, and if it’s salted then that’s extra bad
Nonbinary_Cryptid@reddit
I only have crumpets with butter on them once or twice a year, and I use unsalted butter. She's 16 now, and I think the amount and frequency are not causing problems. I appreciate your concern, and I would see it differently if it was a more regular thing.
SpiderMonkey_1@reddit
If the butter doesn't run down your face as you bite.... not enough butter.
Some_Industry_5240@reddit
I mean that why crumpets have those little holes - butter receptors
Cookiebabeslbc@reddit
I love this logic 🤣 ❤️
FastLeave969@reddit
You let your cat lick your plates?
Savings-Carpet-3682@reddit

Essex-Lady@reddit

daverb70@reddit
Same!
Embarrassed_Storm563@reddit
Same here.
waste_div@reddit
What if we were to stack the crumpets atop one another? What then?
Ok-Duck7554@reddit
You must stack the crumpets. You must stack the first buttered crumpet atop the second buttered crumpet, lest the intervening delay cause the latter crumpet to lose its butter-melting potencies.
beermonster101@reddit
A crumpet fountain, genius...
Hot-Inevitable-1638@reddit
And if you are hungry enough for a 3rd, there is still enough butter to swipe up. The best way!
snozbert18@reddit
There's never any of this butter left.. I dip my crumpet in it with every bite 😂
NoMilkNoMeatVegan@reddit
How big a knob do you get when you have crumpet?( Giggles in 1970's Carry on film style)🤭
Cptnemouk@reddit
This. If my crumpets are not floating, then there's not enough butter.
Salgado14@reddit
Should be enough butter on the plate to dip your crumpet in
ExpressionDeep6256@reddit
I'm sorry, I need to say one thing....cheese. Cheese on crumpets and in oven till cheese melts. God, best thing ever. This is the hill I will die on.
soopertyke@reddit
Proceed to die! Cheese is evil
Aaaahfuckit@reddit
Until said cheese melts through the crumpet and makes a crispy cheese bottom 🤤🤤🤤
ExpressionDeep6256@reddit
Ah... you are my sole mate....let's...eat crumpets.
DoKtor2quid@reddit
Don’t forget the marmite that goes on before the cheese. And for godlike, then the slices of onion that go on top of the cheese, ready to sauté in the melting cheese when it’s under the grill.
Hackers79@reddit
Absolutely marmite under the cheese 🤤 Haven't tried the onion atop the cheese with marmite before. I will purchase some crumpets immediately.
DoKtor2quid@reddit
rejoicing will abound. enjoy!
Living-Excuse1370@reddit
I'm in the melted cheese corner with you..
Buh_Snarf@reddit
If you add a little Worcestershire sauce on top of the cheese before grilling... Heaven!
Ok-Duck7554@reddit
That’s a once a year thing. Like magic mushrooms or watching Goodfellas.
BeardedRaboon@reddit
I love cheese so, send me location of said hill and I’ll die too 😄
bumbleb33-@reddit
Now go add some lime or aubergine pickle under that cheese. You're welcome
jr0061006@reddit
In my house, a naga pickle like Mr Naga goes under the cheese.
DoKtor2quid@reddit
Try aubergine pickle on buttered toast and under a poached egg. Twist of black pepper. Heavenly.
bumbleb33-@reddit
That runny yolk mixes and it's just perfection. Also quite like it with a full English mixed into the beans

As with most British baked goods. Cheese Scones, crumpets, tea cakes, hot cross buns etc. Crumpets are the pinnacle.

aerialanimal@reddit
I don't really eat butter other than on crumpets, and whilst I don't have crumpets that often I make up for it. The answer to "Is there enough butter on your crumpet?" is always "Of course not!". I think this was most eloquently articulated by the renowned poet and philosopher Danny Dyer when he described the perfect crumpet as "pissing with butter".
gmarengho@reddit
So much butter that the drips stain my book of poetry.
iammandroid@reddit
On multiple occasions my partner has told me I put too much butter on crumpets... She's lucky I'm still here really.
BigBunneh@reddit
Be honest, a little bit goes in your mouth from the knife.
Nerry19@reddit
My brother once used the term "a butter boat" meaning any food that is purely used to help you shovel in butter. Think, crumpets, jacket potatoes, mash potatoes, fresh bread.
I think its just a perfect way to put it
ScaredyCatUK@reddit
The only way to be sure there's enough butter is to keep adding it until it comes out the bottom.
CharlieTKP@reddit
my daughter puts the following on it
Chocolate spread, butter ,honey, jam and has been known to also have philadelphia cheese on it....go wild! go rogue! do it your way!
Dr_D-M-T@reddit

soopertyke@reddit
My reply was for other folk too. Although there is some Swedish and Norwegian influences on the accent
DeadBallDescendant@reddit
How can they NOT go together?
throw_way_376@reddit
Get the timing right and just as the crumpet comes out the toaster and is buttered, put cheese on before the hot egg, and omfg it’s elevated to another level.
DeadBallDescendant@reddit
My smoked haddock rarebit crumpet from last Friday: Crumpet in toaster, rarebit warmed through in the the micro. Rarebit on top of crumpet, finished off in the air fryer.
lil_hunter1@reddit
Hear me out. Whisk eggs, pour eggs over crumpets, bake. Eggy crumpet loaf thing, is good.
NoLove_NoHope@reddit
If you like smoked salmon, it’s absolutely divine!
jbkb1972@reddit
That is going to be my Christmas Day breakfast, never had smoked salmon on crumpets
just_burn_it_all@reddit
crumpet > real butter > salmon Philadelphia > ruffled slices of smoked salmon > freshly plucked sprigs of dill > lots of freshly ground black pepper
10/10
NoLove_NoHope@reddit
Enjoy! The obscene amounts of butter underneath are compulsory though!
jbkb1972@reddit
Definitely, lurpak I’m thinking.

winniethegingerninja@reddit

Willing-Builder8922@reddit
Butter and marmite
dictatemydew@reddit
I change it up sometimes. Peanut butter, or Nutella, or butter, sometimes even pistachio creme. Oh and when I'm feeling super guilty about what I've been eating in the lead up I go all healthy and have crushed avocado.
limedifficult@reddit
I was worried I’d be shot as an American immigrant for suggesting the addition of some high quality peanut butter. If you want to feel even guiltier, add a drizzle of honey onto the PB layer and a very light sprinkle of sea salt.
Random221122@reddit
I too am an American immigrant putting peanut butter on the crumpets lol
WritingRidingRunner@reddit
American here as well, and don't sleep on the peanut butter orange marmalade combination!
CaptainMexicano@reddit
Peanut butter and strawberry jam is an underrated combo.
dictatemydew@reddit
Oooh I never mix my spreads but I may have to try this one?
CaptainMexicano@reddit
You won’t be disappointed
Smudge3108@reddit
I can vouch for CaptainMexicano, peanut butter and strawberry jam is a great combination for crumpets
rwe46@reddit
Butter or butter and ham.
MikeSizemore@reddit
Crumpets are simple. Just butter or marge. Anything else is far too flamboyant.
Agitated_Ad_361@reddit
Marge? Is it the 90’s and are you my mum?
niminypiminyniffler@reddit
Do they even still make marge? Which god forsaken establishment would one even find it sold in?!
vcdaisy@reddit
You know all those plant based spreads, they're the rebranded version of marge.
I recently tried one, a brand that rhymes with Nora, in an effort to reduce my sat fat intake. I tried it on toast and wanted to cry. It sat there, not melting! A strange opaque yellowish blob of something akin to axle grease. Thought I'd time travelled back to 1973. I hated it.
The rest of the tub is languishing under the butter tub in the fridge
I_Just_Varted@reddit
Stick with real butter, it's more healthy and isn't an ultra processed food, unlike Nora and the like.
vcdaisy@reddit
IKR but have reached 'that age' where my Dr has me on a statin because of family history giving increased risk. Thought I'd try it but noped out when it just sat there not melting on hot toast. No idea why
Crafty-Sprinkles3470@reddit
Please never marge
LemonKiss1233@reddit
I_Just_Varted@reddit
Omg this is gold! Plant butter cause it's made in all those plant factories. Nasty stuff
WoolyCrafter@reddit
Marge? You heathen!!
dgraveling@reddit
Butter n Marmite And you must double cook the crumpet!!!
PlaneyMcPlanefaceX@reddit
And you must butter AGAIN before the 2nd cook.
RBII@reddit
I know this is old now, but I thought it was worth mentioning that there are toasters out there with a crumpet function now. Whacks up the heat on one side so the top gets properly crisped, but the bottom doesn't turn to carbon.
Game changer, honestly.
crepesoverpancakes1@reddit
Yes!! It has to be almost burnt! Underdone crumpets are too doughy. Also, butter and honey 🍯
foozyfelt@reddit
Omg I thought I was the only double cooker!!! It’s toaster then a quick blast in the microwave once buttered/marmited!!!
Xxjanky@reddit
Double cook how?
dgraveling@reddit
Toast them twice
Xxjanky@reddit
Interesting. Don’t they burn?
Intheborders@reddit
You are completely correct.
HairyLingonberry4977@reddit
Agreed on the double cook. It needs to crunch
TheNinjaPixie@reddit
this is the only acceptable answer.
Timely_Egg_6827@reddit
Before or after adding the marmite? Marmite isn't for me but my partner loves it.
Turbulent_Ebb9589@reddit
Never in my life have I heard of anything other than just butter (or marg) going on a crumpet. I’m horrified at the idea of anything sweet going on them.
IWOOZLE@reddit
Please, trust me and try Philadelphia and Apricot Jam - it's honestly so good, I've turned so many disbelievers onto it!
bumblebeesanddaisies@reddit
Apricot jam is my favourite, that sounds really good! Also, apricot jam, mayo and a bit of curry powder is the best sauce for dipping your chicken dippers in! I guess it's basically Coronation Chicken sauce but it is good!
IWOOZLE@reddit
This is genius! I will be trying haha
SunWarri0r@reddit
I've never tried Philly on them but I would totally try that!

Margarine and smooth peanut butter. The margarine is important, as it slightly dilutes the peanut butter, giving both a more liquid, melted consistency than peanut butter could achieve alone. This is peak on toast as well, but my partner thinks I'm some sort of sicko.

Obviously all of the above combos, and more. But for a sweet crumpet treat, I double toast my crumpet, add lashings of salted butter and then pour maple syrup all over... and over.... until there is a lake of buttery maple syrup lusciousness with the divine crumpet floating in the middle. I then usually eat with a spoon 🙈 Heaven sigh The only problem is, living in Germany now, I don't have access to crumpets, so I've not had one since my last packet of crumpets ran out in January. 😭

One does not spread butter on a crumpet, one retrieves the butter (salted) directly from the fridge and slices it to preference, my preference being about 5mm, then place the slice directly on the very hot crumpet. Sit down with a cup of tea and devour making sure to have a napkin to hand to wipe the buttery mess from one’s chin.

I don't think there are any laws about what to put on a crumpet.. unlike some other English rules of food.... although it is correct that it is traditionally a vehicle for butter ... Personally I find butter (the real stuff not that evil impersonator margarine) and Golden Syrup to be a favourite warming combination...I don't personally agree with putting jam on a crumpet, jam is best reserved for scones (similar to what Anericans call biscuits) along with butter and clotted cream, or on a slice of fresh white bread (with butter of course). I haven’t got any problem with you putting Philadelphia on your crumpet, what I really don't understand is why smoked salmon sandwiches get paired up with cream cheese ... makes them much too sticky ... just butter, black pepper and a squeeze of lemon juice for me

I think some people in the Uk are uncultured when it comes to food. I’ve had people question peanut butter and spices going together as if that’s not like the concept of satay sauce.
But I’m also blasphemous. I’ve melted cheese on crumpets and thought that worked really well. Tried Philadelphia back when i used to eat it and yeah, delicious
Slavir_Nabru@reddit
Yes Philadelphia, but my friend recently started adding a slice of peperoni on top too and they're divine.
baby_oopsie_daisy@reddit
My favourite is toasting the crumpet, adding a load of cheese and melting it under the grill so the cheese melts into the holes. Absolute heaven.
I would also settle for a tonne of salted butter on top

So much butter that i should invest in my own dairy farm. Maybe buy a cow or three. What I'm saying is that there is so much butter on my crumpets that I swipe them around the plate, soaking up all the excess butter that seeped out because there could be a little bit too much butter on the crumpet although I'm sure science has already agreed with my findings.
I also once put marmite on a crumpet, and it was lovely but I felt like i was cheating on butter so I didn't do it again. I spoke with Butter and she has forgiven me so all is much much butter now!

Cut the crumpet horizontally, and put a bit of butter, branston pickle, and cheese inside. Can someone explain to me why I’m not getting crumpets? What am I missing?
When I moved to the UK I took to 99% of your country like a duck to water, but I cannot for the life of me find a way to make crumpets enjoyable.
aemdiate@reddit
You are toasting them aren't you? Raw crumpet is gak. You need to toast them darker than you like toasted bread and you don't spread them with butter, you fill them with butter.
MattSR30@reddit
I am toasting but I guess not enough. I tend to eat toast barely toasted, so that’s possibly the issue.
aemdiate@reddit
Likely the issue, I like pale toast, but crumpets can take the higher settings, and being a bit harder. Go further than you think you'd enjoy.
Just_Information_282@reddit
I too prefer my toast lightly golden but crumpets have to be bordering burnt, it’s the only thing I use the 5 setting for on the toaster.
Crafty-Sprinkles3470@reddit
They need a min of 1.5 goes in the toaster if not twice and it must be butter, not using margarine are you?
BlakeC16@reddit
As someone who uses margarine (well, "sunflower spread" as it's called these days), it works just as well when it comes to putting plenty on and letting it melt in to the crumpet. Though I appreciate butter is the more popular choice and I'm with you on the 1.5 goes in the toaster.

Next time you're doing a Philly crumpet:
Butter it up, cold, and smoosh as much Philly cheese into it as you can.
While you're doing that, get a small frying pan warming up with a healthy blob of butter melting away.
Once the pan is nice and hot, drop the crumpet onto it for a couple of minutes to toast the bottom side.
Re-apply Philly cheese as you feel appropriate before flipping it for a final sear on the Philly side 👌🏻
Thank me later
