Home Secretary Priti Patel wants to introduce immigration legislation which, had it been in force 40 years ago, would have excluded her own parents from coming here. She is evil personified.

Would you go on a stag do that involves climbing a mountain?

Posted by Icy-Western-3314@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 319 comments

ANuggetEnthusiast@reddit

I recently went on a stag that involved a lot of outdoor activity. He’s one of my best mates and I was pleased to do it for him but as someone who isn’t outdoorsy, I had to spend a lot of money on appropriate equipment (hiking boots, waterproof trousers etc) as well as obviously the cost of the accommodation and activities Unless this is a bucket list thing for all your groomsmen, I think it’s way too much/too far, personally.

Thanks for taking the time to reply. I had been told that the Which? recommended products were basically the ones that companies paid the most to promote. But your explanation does make more sense.

Who is buying the premium unleaded petrol?

Posted by Seeyalaterelevator@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 735 comments

ANuggetEnthusiast@reddit

Anecdotal, rather than scientific, and I’ve never owned a petrol car, but we have a 20-year-old Corolla diesel. For 3 years in a row it failed its MOT on emissions and the mechanics did some witchcraft (probably flushed it with Redex or something) to get it through. Then our local Costco opened a fuel station and we run it almost exclusively on their premium diesel. In the three years since, emissions have never been mentioned even as advisories, so I have to assume the premium fuel is doing something right.

Do teachers actually write pupil reports?

Posted by SwitchSmart7151@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 33 comments

ANuggetEnthusiast@reddit

I used to work in a school. I worked in a small but popular subject department, and one of the teachers there had to write over 220 reports that year - basically, every kid they had taught in years 7-11 for their subject that year. They had a word doc with about 10-12 pre-written paragraphs on and they just chose the paragraph that best matched each pupil, then personalised it a little bit. There was literally no way they could have written that many personalised reports from scratch.

If you had full power to redesign the UK education system from scratch, what’s one big change you’d make first?

If you were going to extend the school day to keep in line with ‘normal’ office hours I’d say still finish the academic learning at 3/3:30. Most kids are tired by that point that often the last half hour or so of the day is more or less wasted learning anyway.

Given that the hiring manager was the same manager they’d worked under, it was a bold move

I think this one is partly due to weather. When I was in Spain in 2022, we stayed next door to some olive farms and the host was telling us that the crops for the past few years had been awful due to the weather. Loads of farmers were facing ruin.
