If you went homeless, had a tent, some money, where would you live in the uk?

If you have enough cash to get a dinghy, get yourself off the coast of dover - wait to be picked up by border force and claim you came from palestine/syria and get free money and a hotel - stuff a tent!

There's a lady who works with my friend, who gets a manicure every week, hair colour every two weeks, finances a mercedes but uses a food bank because she's 'too poor'. Oh and if the food bank gives her the 'basic' range of things like tinned beans, she throws them in the bin unopened because they are 'too cheap for her'

Is it even worth buying a house at this point?

Posted by atinywaverave@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 603 comments

As others have said, rent will increase continuously. If you buy a house today and say pay £1000 a month in mortgage, that's it. Even if your wages increase in 10 years, you'll still just pay the 1k a month.

I could replace my entire wardrobe, from underpants to suits to pyjamas entirely from M&S. Anything from their Autograph range is especially nice and lasts far longer than anything from Zara, Next, H&M etc.

Your main issue here is the time. Yes people have gardeners but they don't want them in the evening. Not a lot of neighbours would be too happy about mowers going off at 8pm either when they are trying to relax or get kids to bed. If you want to sacrifice your weekends, then sure.

No it's impossible. /s Yes you can, I know a guy that switched from mechanical engineering to patent law. The main thing is do you have the time and money to study and start from the bottom rung of the ladder in a new career? If you have a mortgage and kids it's a lot harder, but still possible

How can anyone enjoy heat like this, in this country?

Posted by Scattered97@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 1457 comments

wayneio@reddit

It is expensive. The one I have it’s more affordable if you want it in multiple rooms as you have one AC unit in the attic and pipes to every room. Downside is it only works upstairs.  I have used mine for 2 months now. Likely will for at least another few weeks

The problem imo is the generic use of the word love. You can love your partner. You can love your mum. You can love your kids and it’s all a different feeling. I know what the person meant because there’s a feeling you only get when you’re a parent but it’s not to say it’s just love

Most people I see on Reddit are the ones regretting it. I’ve even commented before about how I don’t regret it and simply get downvoted.  In the real touch-grass world, I interact with a lot of parents and for the most part the concenus is “it’s bloody hard work, but there is nothing more fulfilling”. For me, any work problems, neighbours, friends and other drama just fades away. Having a kid takes so much emotional energy, I simply don’t care about other crap. For me there’s nothing in the world I could enjoy more than seeing my kid run to me after work shouting “Papa!”. TLDR the only person you should ask is yourself, you’ll regret not listening to your heart either way.

Do you treat different car makes/models differently on the road?

Posted by Mobile_Turnover6773@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 118 comments

wayneio@reddit

I don't treat others differently but when I'm in my kit car I notice people either love it and give me thumbs up and compliment me on it and ask me questions or they get jealous and ride my bumper or mumble stuff under their breath. One thing I've noticed is that the happy, non-jealous types always seem to be the more successful people and the jealous, angry, miserable types often look like they hate their life.

Idk if I’d notice no EVs. Some cars today you can’t immediately tell it’s an EV or not unless it has the green plate. Definitely lack of scooters would be obvious

Misleading metric due to the long distances involved in flying.  Train fatalities also often include trespassers or cars at crossings. When you look at passenger safety it’s much much better.

I agree with this. The problem is cars are so expensive now. I need to upgrade my juke for something bigger that can handle multiple kids. It shouldn’t be new but also 2019 (6years old) is about as old as I want to go and it’s a struggle to find anything I can pay cash for

It's funny because I was in sixth form around 2010 and I remember distinctly thinking "wow these year 7s don't care about authority like we did when we were in year 7". I wonder if all "good kids" that get to sixth form see the rude younger ones and assume they are all like that.

I am in the same boat as you. If you find the answer please tell me so I can raise my kids well. My wife was overjoyed at a 'very nice and polite' young boy the other day. I asked what he did, and apparently it was just wishing her a good morning as he passed. The bar is low for a kid to be good these days.

I’m also in tech so can’t directly answer your questions but have considered the same. Worth having a paper of pros and cons.  Pros for me would be out and about instead of four walls of an office, more easily able to move into self employment, own boss and own hours. Meeting new people.  Cons are that those own hours would often be long. One difficult plumbing job might have you working at a house until 9pm to get them water working. Difficult customers.  There’s many others to the list. If I were to do it I’d probably go to British gas or other established firm for training and decent pay to skill up before going self employed.  The main reason I haven’t is two young kids that need my attention after 5pm and my tech salary to support them right now.

What are your biggest pet peeves about driving?

Posted by jajay119@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 205 comments

Oh my gosh my BIGGEST pet peeve in life is people who indicate right for the roundabout BUT THEN KEEP IT ON WHEN THEY TURN OFF TO THEIR EXIT! You are better off not indicating AT ALL than indicating WRONG.  If I’m waiting at a roundabout and the car to my right has its right indicator on but then turns of the exist before me so I wait for nothing it annoys the hell out of me.

Today I bought a beggar a Tesco meal deal and he refused it. Should I be discouraged?

I think it got ruined when they could join Scouts. I was in scouts like 15 years ago but I left when they allowed girls to join. Before that it was great that you had spaces for boys on their own and guides for girls on their own. After they allowed girls in scouts, the guides had to change up to compete as scouts did all the camping and wild stuff so well, and so extravagance is what happened.

Posted by baby--goats@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 326 comments

Hardly ever. It infuriates me if I do.  Ordinary people having to clean out jam jars and drive crappy electric cars all while countries burn huge amounts of fossil fuels, celebs fly around the world emitting huge emissions, boomers on cruise ships emitting a cities worth of emissions, huge chains from Krispy Kreme to Gucci destroying perfectly good stock to price items higher, etc etc.  When the rich and powerful start to share the burden, it’ll make more sense

What is it about the United Kingdom that makes you say “I’m glad I live here.”?

Posted by bsmall0627@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 1153 comments

wayneio@reddit

It's okay in most areas. I've recently been pretty down about the UK and thinking about leaving, but when I looked up alternatives, I couldn't find many places I'd rather go. You have places like Dubai and Singapore with great weather and low taxes but you're essentially in the desert so no nice field/mountain/forest walks seeing animals about, instead it's a lot of very wealthy people in a big city and you inevitably will compare yourself against them and that's not a life I like the look of. Spain/France/Portugal look good as the south tends to have better weather than us and better food but then the wages are often lower and in France especially taxes are higher. Australia is popular but for me it's too hot and too many spiders. etc. I could go on, but the point is the UK is 'good' in most aspects. I would like to see something done about crime though.

As the UK heads towards breaking another weather record, do you think most folk understand that we've got at least another 25 years of climate change getting worse, before things get better, ahead of us?

Our only hope is that this amazing world can heal itself. We've already seen that the warmer weather, increased rainfall and increased CO2 has lead to greening of the planet faster than ever before. If we can stop harming the world, perhaps it can start to heal again.

Ok so you're fine for the rule about 10 years from issue as long as you're back before 8th July 2026. Remember, there is another rule "As a member of the Schengen area, Italy requires your passport to be valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure date from the Schengen area. " So for next year you need to be back by 8th April 2026.
