The Great Stuff Transfer. Are you ready for the boomer "inheritance"?

You don't have to accept an inheritance. Tell the state you want nothing to do with it and then it's all their problem. The burden is lifted!

"Boomer Rant I'm 61 years old now - I'm on the leading edge of Gen X. I'm actually 30 days to old to make the official cut-off, but I never thought of myself as a Boomer." Well it is a rant by a boomer, so ok. "We'll be the forgotten kids all they way to the end of the line!" But what's with the "we"? Stop shaking your fist at the clouds.

I thought boomers were unprepared for retirement and depend on their children for retirement. The narrative seems to change every several years.

Good news, you don't have to accept an inheritance. You can tell the state you refuse the estate, and they will take care of the rest. You'll not be bothered with it further.

Why do Americans dislike American cars?

Go back to the First Oil Embargo (1973). This resulted from the position the US took in the 1973 October War. OAPEC then decided to embargo oil for countries who supported Israel. Gasoline prices shot up and in cases became unavaiable. At this time Japanese imports were not considered reliable. Some folks may remember when "Made in Japan" indicated something was cheaply made. Well the Japanese got better at desiginging and building cars. The American OEMS ("The Big Three"), not so much. By the 1980s folks were amazed that a Honda Accord would actually start reliably in cold damp weather. I'm being rather glib, but not by much. I bought a used 1980 Honda Accord in grad school (lived in Detroit) and I was amazed at its reliability.

Confused to see how much hatred there is for “boomers” who are not even boomers.

Part of the problem in discussing generational wealth is the fact that averages are thrown around, when in fact without a description of the particular distribution of values, averages mean next to nothing.

Is it true 1 million in liquid cash is no longer a lot of money in America now?

Posted by gintokireddit@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 1166 comments

waitinonit@reddit

In general having 1 million in available cash is not "nothing". It might not be so much if it's in a 401k/IRA that could be subject to income taxes, and you'll depend on it to fund your retirement. But in general, the days of the TV program The Millionaire are pretty much over.

I live in SE Michigan. I can walk to the same number of places in my current suburb as I could if I lived in Detroit. The days of walking to the Chene-Ferry Municipal market, pulling a shopping buggy, to pick out the chicken (or duck) for Sunday dinner are long gone.

Get a Pizza Margherita in Europe. Then compare that to a Buddy's Pizza or Hungry Howies round pizza in the Detroit Metro area. Slice per slice of the round pizza, there's easily twice the mass in the Hungry Howies as there is in a run of the mill Pizza Margherita in Europe.

The wealth transfer from boomers isn't quite the picture that's presented. All the articles I've read deal with "average" wealth. An average value means next to nothing without specifying the probability density function. In addition, much of the wealth is in real estate. Insofar as that goes, the millennial MEDIAN value of wealth has already surpassed boomers for a similar age and accounting for inflation. It's due to real estate values. It's not distributed equitably and it may not feel like wealth, but it's there. Take a look at the median values of boomer wealth. Gen X, we're not that far apart. Then take into account that real estate has to be liquidated.

" They have been talking social security from our pay since we started working 40 years ago. Think how much we'd have in our 401Ks if we had invested that money. " Like you, many boomers are asking the same question. Neither boomers nor GenX have paid in enough benefits to cover the outlays.

Speaking of TI, they had a fairly good line of DSP chips and integrated DSP for their TIOMAP family. I used them extensively in years past. When did they not make inroads into the GPU space? It would seem with their DSP technology TI would have been a perfect for graphics processing. Maybe I'm missing something.
