Downsizing

54f, divorced, kids all in college and live with their dad in the same town. I bought a 3br house in 2014 and raised them here. (We always had shared custody)
The yard is huge and I haven’t been able to keep up with the weeds. Plus it’s freaking expensive to maintain a house. (It was built in 1964)
So I impulsively texted the owner of the house next door to mine “are you interested in buying a house?”
He came to see it 2 days later, I accepted the offer the next day and 10 days later I put a down payment on a 2BR brand new condo! Waiting on the go ahead to close which should happen in a couple of weeks.
On Friday I had the kids help me move all the stuff in the basement upstairs and I just got finished sorting it. I’m having a moving sale on Saturday.
Never in my life have I felt that something was just meant to be. This process has been so easy. Initially, the buyers were going to renovate and rent it out but they decided to move in once it’s complete. (They are empty nesters as well)
I purchased my appliances yesterday for the condo and I’m looking at living room furniture. Brand new condo, brand new stuff!
I’m unloading so much stuff (physically and mentally) and it just feels so great!

Very, very nice.

Congratulations and best wishes. I live in a small home, 900 sq ft. I'm 70, and able to maintain things with the help of my 43 yr old son. My sister lives in a lovely condo. We planted a garden, like to put up seasonal decor and enjoy a bit more privacy. I think condos are extremely popular with empty nesters.

So happy for you! And envious! I’ve got a 2500 square foot house that’s way too much work and too big for me. 57F, my daughter lives out of state. I’m going to try selling my house in an unconventional manner as you have done. First I need to find a job 🤨!

Congratulations!!! You will love it!!

That’s great! Yes I absolutely dream of downsizing to a condo for exactly the reasons you cite. I don’t do yards, I don’t want to have to find a guy, I just want my place & maybe a community pool.
Ok_Key_4731@reddit (OP)
This place has a pool!

You’re less than 10 years from retirement, with HOA fees in perpetuity. Manage your finances, pay off the condo. Enjoy!!! Congratulations!!!!

I got excited for you just reading this. Everything seems to be falling right into place. Now just continue to focus on yourself and the great new chapter ahead of you. Good luck!

We want a different layout so bad. We have a two-story house with a drive under garage so it’s more like three stories. I’m just so tired of stairs. Previously we had a spacious ranch with a basement and I would love to have something like that again.

What a dream! Congrats!

I'm excited for you!
I'm stuck trying to downsize collections of things without the move, and it is harder to stage. I wish I could just move. I still have 2 of 5 kids in the house though.
NoeTellusom@reddit
Yup, we did this a few years ago and are now living in a home 1/2 the size of the one we raised kids in. It's a nice "oh no, the kids need to move back in" preventative.

You are going to be so free! Enjoy your summer in your new space!

Good for you. I am looking to buy something. My youngest graduates high school next year. We also have joint custody. My oldest just graduated HS yesterday

That's fantastic! I'm doing the same in about 4 years! Moved from a condo to a townhouse 6 years ago because I wanted to have a garden... I'm so over it! I miss my condo living terribly. Congrats!

Love this for you! Congrats.

Boy, you don't mess around!

"Shedding the Past" is carlthartic. The lightness you will feel when it is all gone will be amazing.
Dagobahbodega@reddit
Awesome, congratulations! You have a new lease on life!
AZJHawk@reddit
That’s awesome! I am looking forward to downsizing. I don’t want a 3000 square foot, 5 bedroom house on a big lot. It was nice when raising our kids, but it’s so much work. I don’t know if I could do a condo, but I am looking forward to a nice two bedroom patio home with about 1,200 square feet and a small yard
United_Concept1654@reddit
What is what I want too!!
Xavelle@reddit
This is the option I'm looking at too. Homes are so limited in this small town though so I'm weighing my options to build a small house.
AdEastern9303@reddit
Wouldn’t want a condo. We have a double lot so I’m thinking of splitting it and building a 1200 square footer on the spare lot and sell our house to one of the kids or make it a rental if they don’t want it.
Ok-Offer-541@reddit
So happy for you. ❤️ I am in the same boat and hope to do the same thing within the next year. My house has become too much for me. I hope my experience goes as smoothly as yours! It does feel a little overwhelming. 🫠
ManicOppressyv@reddit
Congratulations. We're looking to sell and buy a small house on big land for our dogs to roam (Aussie shepherds) somewhere coastal. If we can't fit it into a tow behind U-Haul or my truck, it's gone.

This sounds so amazing. Enjoy all your future girl dinners in your new space!

Love it when a plan comes together……..

Congratulations!! When everything folds right into place easily and clearly like that, you know you’re on the right track! 🙌🏽
Realtor_In_Texas@reddit
Hope all goes well, but I wouldn’t buy anything for the new home until you close on your current home.
Sunshine2625@reddit
That is amazing. New chapter loading!
ggibby@reddit
It's nice when you sync up with the universe and the way is clear, emotionally and practically.
Hooray for you!
marcduberge@reddit
Good on ya! You will feel so much lighter as you purge and then start your new chapter. We have a big house and property and will probably need help with it as we age in place. Ultimately I see a condo in our future too
No-Lock6921@reddit
Good for you!
old-cigar-smoker@reddit
I bet it does feel great
powderpoff6@reddit
That sounds so freeing!
I spend so much time managing stuff. It really is a mental burden. I started my family, married with a baby, in a 600 square-foot apartment. Now we are two adults and two teenagers in a 2000 square-foot house and I feel like all I do is move the stuff around and get rid of stuff and organized stuff. I will use your story for inspiration!
Congratulations on your meant to be!
squeaktooth@reddit
Rad! Congratulations and have fun in yr new space with stuff no one else wanted hanging up, foods only you like, weird furniture configurations. 🫡⭐️🫡
