When you get gas for your car, do you have to know how much you need/how much it will cost before filling up?

Posted by Final_Gift6762@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 581 comments

unitconversion@reddit

I also noticed no one mentioned it. That's how I used to do it. Pump gas, go into the station and get a drink or snack, and say "gas on 3" when paying and they'd ring it all up together. Of course I used to be paid with a physical check back then and when I deposited it I would get enough cash out for the week. You'd slowly accumulate a mountain of change and then cash it in for a nice bonus. That's all long gone now.

What happens if a bill is sent from the House to the Senate and the Senate votes it down? Is there a limit to how many times it can be sent back?

Posted by Jimmyboro@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 95 comments

unitconversion@reddit

Generally if a bill fails in one house or the other they would change it before trying to pass it again. If I remember correctly, one house can pass a bill, it can go to the other one and pass with changes at which point it has to go back to the first house to be approved again. Only when the bill is passed as written in both houses does it go to the president.

How are the condition of vegetables in America? What are the most well-known vegetable stores?

Posted by Jean0406Alix@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 164 comments

unitconversion@reddit

Vegetables are in ok shape. Usually buy them at a general grocery store, not a vegetable specific store but when they're in season you can go to a farmers market to get deluxe vegetables. Regular old grocery stores will source them from different places depending on the time of year. Often this means North America in summer and South America in Winter.

38. I don't know if I ever saw an actual playboy magazine. By the time I was a teenager, the Internet was around(even if it was dial up) so magazines kind of weren't that big of a deal. But it was definitely still a big brand and everyone knew what it was.

Why do you need a wallet for your cards?

Posted by ionzd@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 244 comments

unitconversion@reddit

I tried to reply to you with examples, but the automoderator removed it because links to amazon are verboten on this subreddit apparently. Basically, card wallets are super small and only hold cards. Regular wallets usually fold one (bifold) or twice (tri-fold) to neatly hold bills. If you look up "bi-fold wallet" and "card wallet" you'll see examples.

1st or 2nd generation immigrants, what's your experience with white Americans encountering your food culture?

To me, I struggle to tell the difference between any of the different Indian dishes I've had. There's a buffet around here and I think if I was blindfolded I couldn't tell any of it apart other than texture, what protein, and whether it had yogurt or not.

If the cops search your place with a warrant, do they really just go through your place and make a mess?

Posted by techno_playa@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 279 comments

unitconversion@reddit

That's the current interpretation of the constitution, but there's no way it's actually the right one. The same way the second amendment guarantees the right to keep and bear arms, the 4th requires reasonable suspension as a prerequisite for a warrant to search, not simply as a way to search without a warrant.

What's the most confusing thing about the US measurement system for you?

Posted by Majestic-Strain3155@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 284 comments

unitconversion@reddit

The us sizes are also made by folding in half as you go from d to c to b to a. The aspect ratio goes back and forth between two ratios (0.77 and 0.64) instead of being one ratio at every size (0.707), but for most practical purposes they're close enough for upscaling "regular" documents. For example, printing an 11x17 electrical print out on 8.5x11 or vice versa works just fine.

What are some birthday traditions?

Posted by NateNandos21@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 72 comments

unitconversion@reddit

1. You get to pick where to eat out and there is no veto power on the choice. 2. Cake, the number of candles matching your age, and the birthday song. If you blow them all out in one breath you get to make a wish. More then one breath and it won't come true. 3. Birthday spankings. Number equal to your age plus one to grow on. And a pinch to grow an inch.
