Both. I feel like "n"-velope is more common when they're unimportant, like "oh, we're out of envelopes", and "on"-velope when they're important, as in "Can I have an envelope?".

View on Reddit #69418059

Depends on context. If I'm being surrounded by something, I'm en-veloped by it. If I'm putting something into it, it's an ahn-velope.
View on Reddit #69413989

Ahpla@reddit

I say it both ways.
View on Reddit #68910427

LaLionneEcossaise@reddit

Put it in an “ahn-velope.” The fog “en-vel-eps” the city.
View on Reddit #68920943

BananaEuphoric8411@reddit

The emphasis is on the first syllable. ENvelope (paper) not enVELope (to surround). Yeah, English is weird.
View on Reddit #69351158

Ok_Acanthisitta_2544@reddit

Your first one is envelope, but the second one is envelop. They're two different words.
View on Reddit #68925997

LaLionneEcossaise@reddit

My point was I call pronounce envelope “ahn-velope” because of the similar word envelop. It would sound weird to me to pronounce the paper folder with en instead of ahn.
View on Reddit #68926363

InevitableRhubarb232@reddit

The stress is in a different syllable for envelope and envelop and envelope has a long o Envelope is said in the back of the mouth and envelop is said in the front.
View on Reddit #69118355

FavoriteFoodCarrots@reddit

Yes, but many words shift emphasis when you go from noun to verb, and verbs stress the second syllable. COMpound vs comPOUND; CONduct vs conDUCT; CONtrast vs conTRAST. That’s all noun and then verb and in a small sector of the alphabet.
View on Reddit #68927044

I think about this a lot. REpeat vs rePEAT man's the whole meaning changed and it blows my mind.

View on Reddit #68941003

warrenjt@reddit

Not even just stress. The vowel is different. Envelop ends with a short U while envelope ends with a long O.
View on Reddit #68928808

ltsmash1200@reddit

Exactly. They’re spelled differently. Envelope and envelop. The folded piece of paper that holds a letter ends with an ope sound while to wrap or enclose ends with lup sound because of the e at the end of the word. You don’t need to pronounce the first syllable of the word differently to make them sound different because the end of the word is already necessarily pronounced differently.

That's cute. When I was a CNA in a nursing home, I had a patient who pronounced it "ahn-ve-lope" and "bat-tree" for battery.

Same lol. I would feel pretentious saying “ahnvelope”. Couldn’t tell you *why*, but it seems way fancier to me. Not saying that people who say it that way are pretentious, just that I don’t normally say it that way so if I did it would be me trying to sound fancy lol.

You jest, but you wouldn’t believe how people here in New Orleans pronounce things. We have streets named after Greek muses: Calliope, Melpomene and Terpsichore become CAL-ee-ope, MEL-Poe-meen and TERP-suh-core. And Clio famously and hilariously has become See-el-ten (CL10). I am not making this up.
View on Reddit #68916010

poppitastic@reddit

Yeah but we can pronounce Tchoupitoulas without batting an eye or twisting a tongue.
View on Reddit #69333944

InevitableRhubarb232@reddit

It’s not weird that people read words they haven’t heard/seen together in ways that follow their native spelling rules and not the language it’s borrowed from. For people who live there it would be common but not everyone would hear it. Not only hear it but see it spelled at the same time. I’ve heard words before and read words before and not known for a long time that they were the same word.
View on Reddit #69118514

I confess I'm not that up to speed with all the finer distinctions between different groups of swamp people, none of whom seem to know how to speak English properly - either because they're actually French Canadians, or because they're southern. I use both, but differently. I have ants. Some of my friends did, too. Others used ahhnt so I'd use that for theirs. (I'm the sort who uses Aunt and Grandma titles for my cousin's or close friend's relatives when speaking to or about them, even if I'm not related. Except for my bestie's dad. His name is Bill Murray so I say that instead of PopPop or whatever her kids call him. lol) If my friend was black, I'd assume they had ahhnts(and they usually did). Or if it's a term used in respect for a not officially related woman- close family friend or elder, it's usually ahhnt, too.

I think I flipped back-and-forth, and pronounce it both ways. Sitting here thinking about it, I can't distinguish how or why I might pronounce it one way versus the other on any given occasion. The school secretary at my small, private high school was very sweet lady obviously from the deep south, and also apparently under educated. I vividly remember that she used to pronounce the word "envelope" when referring to the paper pocket with a flap in which you put other papers, the same way you would pronounce envelope if using it as a verb. WAIT! I just asked Siri for the definition of envelope, and it didn't list it as a verb. I've heard "envelope" used in waste similar to this: "the fog enveloped the street lights". OR "She enveloped her grieving friend in a warm embrace." Have I lost my mind? Has anyone heard or used envelope as a word, similar to my examples above?

It depends on the use. If it's a noun, like what you put a letter inside of, the emphasis is on the last syllable (en-ve-LOPE) and the O is a long O. If it's a verb/adverb, technically it has no E at the end, and the emphasis is on the middle syllable (en-VE-lop), so the O has a short sound.

Interesting that you accent the third syllable for the noun. My Chicago accent puts the stress on the first syllable with either "EN-vuh-loap" or "ON-vuh-loap." The verb, without the final "e", stresses the second syllable: "ehn-VEH-lup."

I say it both ways. Same with other words, like “aunt” (ant or awnt). Right or wrong, I think it’s due to my mom (turning 80 this year) being a first generation American. Her Hungarian father and German mother immigrated then naturalized in the 1920s. She was taught only English by her parents, but that was not either of their first languages.
