Yes, my mom took my friends and I to concerts to years before we could drive. After we could drive, we still included her if she wanted to come bc she was a real one for driving us an hour each way while we were kids.

I am glad that was your experience. My experience was not that. I've had two. Didn't sleep either time and was still running to the bathroom at the surgical center. The second time the pills made me throw up too, so I got to do both. The first time I went to grab food after and immediately got sick again. So not an ancient wives tale for everyone, but it won't stop me from getting the next one.

Almost 25 years together and I adore him. We’ve mellowed with age and I think that helps. Not having kids has also given us one less thing to argue about. We both feel incredibly lucky.

If your parents are alive, is it a blessing or no?

Posted by cis_love3@reddit | GenX | View on Reddit | 203 comments

thisistestingme@reddit

My mom is 85 and very much herself. Truly a blessing. My dad died at 75 after 12+ years of degrading health. My first instinct when he passed was, “Thank God.” My stepmom was even worse, and we were all just grateful for her passing for all of us, most especially her. Her end was a tragic one in every way (ALS and dementia). There are many, many worse things than death.

This is super unprofessional behavior by your boss period. I am Gen X. I once raised my voice at an employee (I did not yell), and I spent a very long time asking for his forgiveness for my unprofessional behavior. This isn’t normal and people shouldn’t act this way. It sounds like you handled it very well though.

Honestly I think a lot depends on the person. It’s also so much harder to live on your own than it was when we were young. I got by with almost no pay (I mean truly laughable) because everything was so cheap. That is definitely not the case now. Is your kid making progress? Do they have goals? Can living at home help them meet those goals? My parents help subsidize my life to a greater then a lesser degree until I had worked professionally for about a year. It made all the difference for me, and I was able to make good grades, be successful and save some money. But they also had the money to be able to do that, and they knew how hard I was working. That’s different that a kid that is just mooching off you with no future plans who is not making any progress.

My mom is 85 and she’s about to move overseas with the love of her life and have an adventure. She very much subscribes to the Andy and Red Shawshank wisdom of “you can get busy living or get busy dying” and honestly her attitude is contagious. I’m in my mid 50s. I am more fit than ever (discovered Pilates and am obsessed) but mostly I feel free bc I just don’t give a shit about so many stupid things that took up space in my mind as a young woman. I feel smarter and more wise than ever. I look forward to my crone era! Volunteer (helping people helps me so much), take a walk outside, reach out to a friend. These are the things that make life worthwhile at any age.

I’m so sorry this is happening to you. I feel like it’s odd, too, because most Americans I know love accents! I would personally want to know your whole life story. Do you have any options to move to other towns? Maybe somewhere bigger would be more open. Again, that sounds so hard and I’m really sorry.

(Sample size three families across France). Loved the people, the culture and the food, but damn it was near impossible to sleep.
