How do you stay motivated after many years in the industry?

temp_vaporous@reddit

It's less about keeping motivation and more about avoiding burnout in my opinion. I break my tasks down into small parts with clear checkpoints so every day I can look back and clearly see what I accomplished (helps with motivation). I also aim to be no higher than in the top half of producers as being a hero for your team/product will not help you in the long term. I pretty much finish work by 3:00 PM every day and have made it to senior by working like this. The free time at the end of each day is motivating, especially if you have a company with a culture of letting you leave early if you are done with your work and have demonstrated a history worth being trusted with that freedom.

Yep first time senior. Was junior for 2 years and mid level for 4. Definitely some growing pains and mindset adjustments but I'm getting a lot of good perspective from these replies. I'm confident I'll grow into it and figure it out, and if I don't it certainly won't be for lack of effort.

Most of the drama is over the use of the word genocide (because it isn't a genocide). If the conversation was about how Israel treats Palestinians or framed through the lens of a human rights/humanitarian issue, it would be a lot less of a hot topic. A lot of antisemites are also using this as an excuse to hate all Jews in public forums as well, and hating all Jews is very much becoming normalized on Tiktok, Instagram, and other social media platforms. For some reason acknowledging the complexity of the situation is too much for a lot of people. People want some kind of movie "good guy vs bad guy" scenario which real life is just not capable of providing.

Software engineer. Bachelor's degree in computer science and in criminal justice (thought I wanted to be a cop at one point lol). 6 years experience. 108k. The tech field is crumbling and companies are offshoring to India again. If I could do it all over i would have done something different.

It seems that American Airlines is offshoring its entire IT organization to India, which would be a huge blow to the city

100% true. They are going product by product and firing 25% of staff. Not even based on skill or seniority, just randomly. They are even firing management in these waves. Keep in mind the products they are doing this to are already understaffed even before these cuts.

I work at a fortune 100 company here in DFW and see it firsthand. In my personal experience the decrease in quality is not important to business over the cost savings.

A lot of these positions are contractor only unfortunately, so no good benefits to speak of and a lot of competition with H1B visas who will do the same work for half the pay. I'm currently in tech and wouldn't recommend it to others. Everything is being outsourced, there is not path from junior to senior as a full time employee of a company anymore.

Help with the unhoused

I find "unhoused" to be even more derogatory. "Homeless" sounds bad because it is. It is someone lacking something normal, a home. Unhoused makes it sound like the person is just making a lifestyle choice. It feels like whitewashing the issue if anything.

Everyone on this sub wants to drive 100+ and views tapping their brakes as assault that warrants a lethal response so people are going to take the other driver's side. Just be happy that the police are finally starting to enforce some traffic laws. Hopefully a few of the members of this sub get the reckless endangerment charges they deserve.

Speed limit lowered on Texas highway due to 'dangerous' conditions

temp_vaporous@reddit

I'm not reading this massive essay that tries to justify being able to drive 100 MPH in a school zone or whatever. Literally my entire point is only that, as long as you are not in the left lane, driving the posted speed limit is acceptable. Try writing local officials about creating an autobahn if that is what you want, but the rest of us out in the real world will stick with going 5 over.

Wild to me that I am expected to cushion people who had such easy access to wealth while they were working age because they didn't have the foresight to plan for retirement. Pay and benefits are really bad compared to the surrounding cities. Plano, Irving, Grapevine, Fort Worth, Lewisville, etc... all pay more. Also a lot of officers will start at DPD due to the lower entry requirements and then transfer to one of those other, higher paying departments once they have a few years of experience. I ended up getting my CS degree and going that route instead, but at one point like 6 years ago I was applying and going through the entry tests/physical stuff for a couple departments. DPD started at I believe 48k while Plano started at 68k for reference. It is a big difference. There are also concerns with the sustainability of the pension system that DPD has. Someone who works closer to officers might have more up to date info, but this is what I recall.

Is a single individual earning $120k annually enough to live a comfortable lifestyle in Dallas?

Posted by MEgrump81@reddit | Dallas | View on Reddit | 52 comments

temp_vaporous@reddit

The main issue i am encountering is in the down payment for a competitive offer, not in being able to afford mortgage payments. It is hard to compete with people offering 50k over asking with more than 50% cash down. Even with a 20% down payment I have not found myself to be competitive. Prices are still going down though, so I may simply have to wait a few years and hope demand cools off.

What's everyone's thermostat set to?
