How I became a pilot- time and costs

> The remote six fig job is excellent on paper but I was so obscenely bored that I knew there was no way I could do that the rest of my life. This is the exact feeling I've been having dude. My job is so low stimulus that I'm absolutely bored out of my mind constantly. The position that I'm in is exactly the kind of job I dreamed of having when I was working insane 100 hour weeks in the Navy, but it turns out it sucks balls. Happy for you man. Best of luck in this new chapter!

How I became a pilot- time and costs

I'm in a very similar financial and career situation that you were in. My workload is <40hrs a week, I make six figures, and I'm fully remote. I started flight school earlier this month. Based on my dual flight costs so far, I can cash flow 10 flights a month without spending any of my savings. Hoping I can have a similar timeline to yours.

Switching Careers

Personally, I wouldn't do it. That's a large chunk of change to drop that you may not get back if you need to bail on flight school.

Go to a Part 61 school and pay as you go. I’m 34 and work in corporate cybersecurity and started flying a couple weeks ago. I’m hoping I’ll be able to land a CFI gig in 2.5-3 years, but right now I’m enjoying the process. Don’t spend years overthinking it. Just go on a discovery flight, see if you actually like it, then start training. Do not take out a loan.

Be honest, is trying to change careers to be a pilot at 40 a fool’s errand?

I work in cybersecurity too. 34 years old and also looking to make a career change into aviation. I was planning to start at a Part 61 down the road from me next month, but I blew through my savings buying a gravel bike and an engagement ring for my girlfriend haha. Turns out buying jewelry when gold is at an all time high is a bad idea. I'm going to save up enough money to get my PPL, make that my focus, then once I have my PPL decide whether or not I want to go all in.

These vehicles are highly underrated and don't get enough love from this community. I drive a 2004 Montero and am continuously impressed with its offroad performance and general handling. Not sure what the market looks like in Portugal, but you can get these for really cheap in the States.

No, I “overland“ aka car camp several times a month from March - November. I did it before covid, I did it during covid, and I’ll be doing it the rest of my life.

Pretty much every war after WW2 has been a failure because of a lack of strategic-level military doctrine. Tactically, the US Military beat everyone it went against. We failed in Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan because we couldn't decide what our actual purpose was there.

I used to love my bike commute into work. My city has a beautiful pathway that follows the river, so I didn't have to deal with traffic. Plus it was 12 miles of riding every day which I counted as "free" exercise.

I rode my bike to work every day when I still worked in the office. It was a really nice ride for 6 miles along a river pathway too, so no traffic. Definitely miss that aspect of going into work.

I'm not a pilot so I don't know this, but since aircraft don't have ratings are they classified by type? How do they differentiate between rotor and fixed wing?

Appreciate the answer! I used up my GI Bill to get my Bachelor's in IT, wish I would have considered flying as an option when I got out but that's okay. I just want to fly airplanes, man. We have a couple bush flying 135s in Idaho that fly hunters and rafters into the backcountry. Getting a gig with one of them would be a dream for me.

How long did it take you to get all your ratings while working? That's the route I'm going to go. Currently saving up to have all the cash for my PPL and planning to go to a Part 61 at BOI, which is 10 minutes from my house. I have a pretty good paying tech job right now with chill hours and absolutely DO NOT want a massive loan. This seems like a good time to not go into debt for flight training.

Thinking of leaving IT, thoughts?

I’ve thought quite a lot about leaving IT for a career as a pilot. The training costs for flight school are what’s been keeping me in IT, though.

Yeah true. To clarify, those positions are $100-150k/yr. But yeah you're correct, there aren't any Idaho employers paying big tech money since they don't have to.

Pretty much all IT positions are over 6 figures. Idaho is an amazing state to live in if you're into the outdoors, but INL is located in the desert by Idaho Falls and is NOT worth living in since it's boring as hell and full of Mormons. I wouldn't live in Idaho Falls for anything less than 300k and even then I'd have to seriously think about it.

Idaho has Micron, HP, and the Idaho National Laboratory to name a few. Micron pays very well, but is in Boise and not rural Idaho. Idaho National Lab is in the middle of buttfuck rural Idaho, pays very well, but struggles to recruit anyone since you're required to be onsite in the middle of the desert.

I have a very specific reason for hating the Big Bang Theory. When I was in the Navy, on a submarine, one deployment that show played 24 hours a day for 2 god damned months. The crew's lounge was only about 20 feet from where I slept so I could hear that god awful show any time I'd lay in my rack to sleep. I fucking hate it so much.

If you're new to IT, you can get a support role like IT Helpdesk. The person that you're responding to sounds like they're probably a Systems Administrator. I did that gig for a while remotely before moving into IT Management, and now Cybersecurity. I still work remotely and my work/life balance is pretty much what he's describing and I get a comfy paycheck. It's great.

I'd say based on my profile you probably couldn't accurately guess what I do for a living. But I can tell you that I do indeed work in security. It doesn't seem like you know much about the field. Not everyone that works in security is a super sick hacker. But let's hear your guess, what do you think I actually do?
