How many holiday days do you get a year?

Posted by thomashrn@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 66 comments

sritanona@reddit

Mine kinda sucks. I get 29 days + my birthday + 2 days in the Christmas period. But it doesn't include bank holidays because it's an overseas company. I miss my old job where I had unlimited and would end up taking between 30 and 35 days + bank holidays.

16 year old son has started setting goals but never starts working towards them. Does a good parent force them to start?

I don’t know, my parents left me to decide on my own and I had zero discipline I feel. Like I was a self started but would drop things really quickly (also adhd tbf). Managed to turn it around mostly because I learned from my husband I think. His parents taught him discipline and made him do things when he didn’t want to and now he can apply himself.

seems like a hard situation to even find. The partner who brings it up as an option poses the question and if the other partner doesn't want to lose them they might convince themselves that it's what they want. I don't know. If I imagine someone else with my husband I get the heebie jeebies so I know it's def not for me.

Yes but only wash "delicate" or the very dirty things by hand. For things that I've cooked on or that have dry chocolate milk, or food stuck to them, I'll put warm water in them to soak. I like to put my dirty stuff on the sink so when I run the hot water to wash, I feel like it helps get things "loosened up" bellow it. And I don't like drying things up with a kitchen towel, I put them up to dry on the strainer/drainer or whatever it's called.

I would actually love to have a sink in my office, I hate having to go to the kitchen for water every two hours. And my bottle of choice doesn't fit well in my bathroom sink.

I've heard of two coworkers who had burglars and they both said they came in through the door. Do people not lock their doors?! Some said "they went through the door into the garden and then the one from there is not locked". I don't trust society that much.

How do young adults in Europe manage to travel extensively across the globe?

Posted by Cool-Assistance-8666@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 79 comments

sritanona@reddit

A euro or a pound are very high in value in other places of the world. I live in the UK now and 99% of places I go to outside of the UK, I feel they are affordable and I can buy more stuff than at home. I used to live in Argentina and did two overseas trips while living there, and it felt like I had to basically not eat to keep in budget. As someone who didn't grow up with money, and in a country that has no money, I understand your question. People saying "rich parents" have no idea what they're talking about. Traveling when you're FROM Europe or UK is so easy and cheap compared to people from other countries. Also all the traveling you see within Europe is usually quite cheap too. My mum lives in Malaga now and last time she came to visit her flight (here and back) was cheaper than ONE train ticket in the UK to get to my house (which costs £60 - 1:30 hour train ride from London to the commuter belt). It's usually cheaper for me to plan for holidays abroad than to do holidays within the UK.

Why have you not married when in a long term relationship?

in my previous relationship we had been together for 6 years when it ended, and had not married. I think I thought I didn't want it, he also didn't, I thought it was stupid since "why marry". I don't know. When my met my current husband I felt like I wanted to marry him within a month of knowing him. Literally made me think about what a marriage means etc. I don't know what made this change. I just knew I wanted to marry him. I think I was in love in my previous relationship too, I just didn't have that "I want to marry him" thing. Husband and I married a year ago and our relationship is going to be 5 years next month.

Just a guess: \- Not so much sitting in front of a screen all day \- Walking places because people actually did stuff instead of sitting in front of a screen all day \- No snacking the whole day out of boredom \- People cooked at home more Not judging people, I work with a computer at home. So basically any movement I do has to be planned by myself, I don't have the "walking around all day" I used to have when I was young and worked at a shop, for example, or went to school, or had to go places to meet friends instead of just videocalling them to play videogames.

It shouldn’t be so expensive 😭 that’s what I mean. argentinian ice cream is one of the best in the world (I think it came second in the last competition after Italy) and it’s something we buy at least weekly. Even in winter. I miss it so much. I did get an ice cream machine and make it at home sometimes. I particularly miss dulce de leche granizado. The uk seems to not be able to eat dulce de leche without putting salt on it.

Yeah I do like when we can go to a farm shop. I wonder why other countries can have both supermarkets and also the smaller shops and we just can’t for some reason. There are still lots of butchers and bakeries but maybe people see those products as having a bigger quality gap between small shops/big shop than vegetables and fruit?

I'm surprised there are no produce shops that are just for produce. That was a big cultural shift for me! I was so used to just going to a produce shop to get veggies, then to the butcher to get cheese (for some reason), the bakery at 7:30 am to get fresh bread. Where can I even get fresh bread now? Just the supermarket? (not that it matters because I've developer a gluten intolerance, probably from all that lovely bread I was eating lol).

Mexican food in some form is kind of everywhere though (at least in the West Midlands). Tacos, tortillas, spices, etc, I can find. Corn tortillas are a bit harder but I find them in gluten free sections in big supermarkets. I'm southamerican and that is what we're really missing. I can find dulce de leche in my local Sainsbury's now at least (which feels like a miracle!), and I make empanadas with the rolled filo pastry, although it's not the same. But we're completely missing all sweet pastries and they're quite different from the ones in Europe. The most similar thing would be an Italian Cornetto but even then it's not the same. And don't even get me started on churros. We only get the Spanish/American style churros here, more for dipping, we don't get any of the ones I'm used to 😭 Which are shorter, thicker, filled with dulce de leche or crema pastelera (similar to nata), and sometimes covered in chocolate. As an Argentinian I also miss Mantecol. It's quite unique. Sometimes my mum attempts to make it mixing meringue and homemade peanut butter. Halva is a bit similar but not close enough and it's more spiced than sweet. There's so many things I just have to make from scratch. And also for example Arepas are ridiculously hard to find, pao de queijo/chipa, Japanese-Peruvian food (Nikkei) is everywhere in Buenos Aires but almost impossible to find in the UK, I've seen only one restaurant offering it and it's like a luxurious thing. Being from Buenos Aires I'm also super used to jewish food, specially their sweets, and Algerian food, we just seem to have a lot of those places, and I can't really find any here. At least we do get Lebanese food everywhere so I have that. Also... Ice cream. I see a few ice cream places but most have bought ice cream from a big brand. It's really hard for some reason to find ice cream made in-house, and when you find it, it's ridiculously expensive and forget about buying by the kilogram. I was so used to cheap traditional ice cream. Luckily there is one place near my small town where they make ice cream but I have to drive there and they only sell individual portions so I almost never get it.

I do think that they tend to "level down" so people don't get left behind, but the students who find it easy end up being terribly bored. I didn't study in the UK though, but I asked my husband who went to grammar school in England and he said that they also had the same amount of jokesters/people just cruising as any other school, the only difference was a test to get in. As a kid I did just do courses outside of school, read a lot, and exchanged math lessons for piano lessons with a neighbour (I taught her kid, she taught me). That helped me I think. Because when I was bored I just partied a lot and stayed online the whole night. My god daughter has the same problem, and has just finished school. During the last year she started taking distance level 1 university courses to just get a little bit ahead and use her time with that. So maybe look into some extra activities she could do?

Can someone suggest a milk chocolate that tastes like it did back in the day?

I love lindt for this. Their milk chocolate is so velvety soft. But also as we get older we taste things differently. I remember tonic water being absolutely disgusting to me as a kid and now I really like it and find it refreshing, for example. So it may not be the same. I don’t love tony’s, it doesn’t feel as high quality as their price point suggests (for milk chocolate obviously which is not a luxury but it should be better).
