What purchase made you realise that you're finally out of poverty?

A bean to cup coffee machine, a good quality one, fresh coffee beans that I actually drive to collect because I like the drive.... And then still going to a bloody coffee shop to grab a coffee. Just because I can without feeling too guilty

how do you handle cooking during the work week?

Posted by Think_Shake_5259@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 210 comments

shell-84@reddit

I tried a weekly planner, I tried to shop for it but found that I either didn't have the time to cook on a particular day, meat wasn't going to last until day it's needed etc. all I need is a chef who cooks my meals. That's all. Is that too much to ask???

What’s an embarrassing work tantrum you’ve witnessed?

Posted by franki-pinks@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 777 comments

shell-84@reddit

Not really a tantrum but pre COVID worked in an open plan nice office with a fair number of people. Weekly meetings on what could be improved, like plants, air purifiers etc. one guy really wanted a phone box so that he can take private calls in the open plan office. I mean I don't know, first world problems etc

That's exactly what I've said for the last few months now. £30 and as if the cash meter starts the moment you set a foot outside.

What is the cheapest and most filling meal for when you're broke as f**k?

Posted by amapofdecayingworld@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 529 comments

shell-84@reddit

Pasta, massive 2kg bag, can do it with cheese, tomato sauce, tuna etc whatever you have really and cold pasta can be turned into salad with whatever you may have left. Potato dishes such as jacket potato with any filling you may have. Again if you have some flour and dried yeast (can last a whole month if you buy a small tin), can make pizza dough and tomato paste from tomato puree that's around 60p, one spoon with some water with whatever herbs you have and some cheese. Rice too with whatever you may have to add as topping

Tried to get out of bed, stood to take a step down for whatever reason, foot got tangled in duvet, balance was lost, fell very quickly head first banging it onto wall and kind of bouncing backwards from the impact onto the gap between the wall and opened door hitting my left shoulder and arm. I think it hurt a lot, I can't remember much about the pain now but I felt confused and bruised if that makes sense.

Doors have to be shut in my house. I feel exposed when they are open. Only exceptions on the rare summer days where I keep all doors and windows open to creat some sort of draughts. Yep doors shut, lights off etc etc

Are UK clothes shops getting worse? Trying something to find something to wear from UK clothes shops (physical stores and online)

Posted by RebeccaPolly@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 216 comments

shell-84@reddit

I don't even have the mental energy to go clothes shopping. They all look either like cheap tat or are so expensive for one item such as a top. Trying to use my clothes for as long as I can and then might go to check out some stuff in H&M or Next. Zara for me seems to steep for what it is and any stores more expensive I wouldn't go into anymore. Online shops are also energy sapping especially when thinking of returning the items that are likely the wrong size once worn. I have become my husband! Hate clothes shopping.

I remember when we were little we all got in the car and mum would drive. Just drive us around places. Now as an adult I keep wondering where to drive and always end up thinking of places to shop or run errands to justify the drive. I think I will go for an aimless drive this weekend, music, coffee, countryside...

A few cheap sliced loaves of bread from Aldi/Lidl and put them in freezer, take out slices as you need to toast then. These can actually last a long time in the freezer. Pasta with olive oil, salt and pepper and chilli flakes can be delicious and add every veg that won't last too long to bolster the pasta meal. Same with rice where you can add whatever you like. also for breakfast other than toast just own brand cereals are good value.

How do you deal with the pain/jealousy of losing out in life?

I'm sorry you feel this way. I think the good thing about Reddit is the ability to vent to random strangers and let out our sadness, worries and grief and we won't be judged for it, mostly. Maybe list down things you know you enjoy and then look into it to maybe find a hobby and then a club that does the hobby too and mingle with people. I always doubt myself too and wonder how people see me, why can't I have friendships like other people who genuinely seem to bond. I am always the acquaintance, or the one who will always say yes when opportunity for a coffee morning comes up. I try not to say no so I don't miss out on these rare instances of meeting other adults. But they are not often. Makes you always wonder why others don't seek you out and it could be simple genuine things such as them being busy, other friends family etc, but the self consciousness is always present. 😔

When I find myself or loved ones in bad or difficult situations I feel as though I can't live properly. Like I can only cope with doing the bare minimum to get through the day and do what's required. I feel this sense of loss and worry and anxiety and constant need to cry. I feel I need to resolve the situation immediately and the despair is real, especially when some things are not even in my control. I then try to think logically (only probably recently forced myself to think reasonably) and wonder how would I have felt and behaved if I didn't have the problem? Would I have enjoyed watching rubbish TV, or made myself a nice drink or read a lovely book? I try and do it and even though I know in my head and heart I am just pushing troubles aside I try to live a little. It is bloody hard. I do get what you mean. All I can say is maybe write things down, anything. What makes you angry, jealous sad, what would you like to do if you could? What can you realistically do that is available to you etc. I think being able to think logically and compartmentalise and write things down might help. Not that I can even get myself to do that. I have shit coping mechanism

What hobby have you picked up in your adult life that makes you think “why didn’t I do this years ago”?

The problem I find is that where I work from home and am very flexible to play tennis, there is nobody else with the same flexibility. My hubby works not from home and when he gets home there is nobody to look after the children. I have written posts on my local FB but nobody responded. The local tennis club which is lovely only has a certain day and time for beginners that does not work for me. Still, might write another post on FB and try my luck again.

Tennis. Once you learn the basics it is a sport you can play - even if you are a total beginner. It will take years and years to become close to being good but the fact that I kinda remember some basics from the group I joined makes me happy. However, as always when you go up, you go down, my foot pain hasn't allowed me to play for months.

The fact that we are away from normality, routine, work and home. We want to live with no rules and no worry. Well one rule we do stick to is queues no matter when, where or what though. So yeah I would drink at that time although I'd prefer a nice coffee first

I may be downvoted but I actually put shorts under my daughters dresses for her own comfort and I wouldn't like the idea that people could see her privates if she was playing and her dress could show her privates. Kids do sit in some funny positions sometimes. Maybe the teacher was trying to be politely hinting out although she should have just spoken to you privately and explained why. I kid you not I was once in Germany where they have outdoor pools and there was a parent who stripped both his daughters naked after they swam, let's say aged 4 and aged 8 and they were lying on sun loungers with legs completely open until they wanted to get back in the pool. I felt very angry and protective and couldn't understand why a parent would allow this. But yeah I of course didn't say anything just because different country and well not my kids so not my rules. Didn't want to be a Karen
