shrinking filesystems still feels way too painful in 2026

No it's not. I do it routinely with zfs, remove vdevs, add vdevs. It automatically rebalances. I think btrfs can do it too

Have a fleet of hundreds of Solidigm drives. Some are failing, all under 5 year warranty. Solidigm hard offering to pay us 1000$/drive (purchase price) instead of replacement. New Solidigm - exactly the same - drives, were quoted at 5k to us by a reseller of theirs.  Legal is handling it

Didn't Think It Would Happen

That's just nitpicking. Covid caused people to lose income so they got subsidies (printed money) which caused inflation causing yet more problems. It's not two separate issues, it really is just one.

How can it be short term when you print 4T worth of money ? I'm talking about the inflation here. That's what caused and is causing the current hardships

People still face hardships due to the rampant inflation of the past few years. This was caused by Covid, supply chain logistics issues and also by #45 printing 1.9T to help people out. #46 printed money too for sure, but what we have lived since, with most wages not keeping up with inflation is directly tied to that money printer. And guess what, it's going on even harder now. BBB projects how many more T of debt ?

Is this the same company that shipped the same encryption keys to all Exchange versions for like 10 years ? They don't even have to hide the backdoors too hard.

I didn't say yours or not. I said current. And the current one managed to destroy any trust everyone else had in US companies by turning them into his vassals. So yeah, everyone is looking for alternatives, yesterday.

Immutable backups, ever come in handy?

Posted by itiscodeman@reddit | sysadmin | View on Reddit | 109 comments

rmeman@reddit

but you see my point ? You said FreeBSD doesn't have really immutable snapshots - which is true - while Oracle / Solaris does. They have that in as much as it's to prevent accidental deletion of the snapshot, although FreeBSD has that with holds, but they can be removed, whereas with Oracle you can't bypass them. However, as root, with Oracle you can simply dd over the drive and the immutable guarantee is gone. So yeah, as soon as root is gained, it doesn't matter what immutable feature you have.

So can you tell me why a root user in Solaris facing a snapshot with a retention period can't do dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/your\_device(s) to wipe them clean ?

Immutable backups, ever come in handy?

of course, it's just as good as any other paid service, better even: 'immutable' box does pulls from other backups or live environment. No1 can get in to remove the backups unless they hack that server. But if you are willing to accept that someone can hack a standalone server, might as well accept that your cloud provider can get hacked too. And honestly, from a security point of view, an organization with 1000000 entry points and using 100000 different software, as we see daily, is a lot more hackable than my standalone server. I bet you to prove me different :)

semantics. Unless your immutable storage is write-once cd's or tapes, nothing is truly immutable. Your remote 'immutable' storage service, someone hacks them, they'll be able to delete everything.

Once you get vendor/cloud locked, you are done for. They sell you basic stuff for $$$. Immutable backup=A 4U server with 500Tb storage at another dc. Run FreeBSD with ZFS. Zfs snapshot receive daily into the FreeBSD server where you have separate credentials. keep 365 snapshots. 4u colo is like 300$/month and 500Tb storage you make it back in less than a year of expensive software / 'cloud' storage.

Let me just enumerate a few nice ones from MS, just off the top of my head. \- Re-using the same Exchange server-key on all installed versions from 2013 - 2019 \- Having been completely penetrated for 2+ years by China and not realizing it until some customers with the higher tier plan realized there were weird logins \- this latest juicy one. Global access for anyone to any tenant. lol, and you somehow accept this.

you should run with 3 replicas in production. Even so, ceph does(or did?) have short io-timeouts while it acknowledged the dead node. That's what I'm inquiring about

3 Major CVE's released for Sharepoint ONPREM

these CVEs can be applied to any tenant so it doesn't matter who the tenant is. Their strategy makes it seem as if their services are better protected when in fact they aren't. Not only that, they massively dropped the ball at least twice. China hacking them and ... then what ? They wiped everything clean and restored from last known good backups ? Good luck trusting them
