Communication problems with Brits. Could you Brits give me advice?

I would avoid vagueness. If you are answering simple questions like “where are you living” - like you answered this one - You are going to frustrate people.

who wears slippers around the house ?

When is it time to retire slippers? I have some lovely pairs that don’t seem washable and have worn them enough without socks that it seems like their lifetime must be finite?

Lol! That’s exactly what my friend said upon discovering her terse texts were regularly being interpreted as pissed off I wish I could say I were inured to it - but sometimes her “No.” in response to me asking if she wants to hang out or something still gets me!

Does it stem from “xoxo” which people used to write at the end of letters to signify “kisses and hugs”? It seems too coincidental not to be somehow related?

Also - do you read the “x” as a sound in your head? What if you’re reading the text aloud to someone? Do you say the “x” or “xx”? Like if I got a cold text that said “No.”: I would read it to a friend something like: “Ouch, he just texted me back ‘no period’” A period alters meaning enough that I do read it as a word if conveying a text to someone.

Curious foreigner here, what do middle-class Brits brag (or humble-brag) about to their neighbours?

Interesting - the Halloween and Christmas decorations as brag is a new one to me! Is it about having tasteful decorations or just an absolute ton of them?

Do you think shorts and a Hawaiian shirt is a bad look?

I have always envied how many Hawaiian shirts are made for men!! I just wish there were more women’s options I love wearing the few I have with aviators so I can feel like a PI I don’t think you can go wrong with Hawaiian shirts & shorts, they’re cheerful & colorful!

Heavy gym sessions would make me kinda proud of my insomnia for once! It usually due to me messing something up - like not exercising for days or weeks, or watching tv too late.

What do you do after dinner/tea in the evening?

Posted by Flying_worms@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 309 comments

Could you add one “date night” a week to start out, something to look forward to like every Friday? It’s daunting to break the habit of staying in in the evenings and watching tv if you have to plan *every* evening. But starting out small with one evening a week might inspire you while you’re out to see other places you’d like to go in the evening!

What's likely to give away an American writing in British English?

Posted by vvnnss@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 2951 comments

quincecharming@reddit

Strong enthusiasm/hyperbole tend to be American: - Omg you guys I had the best weekend!! 😁 - Awesome!! - I wanna give you the biggest hug ever!! - Freaking worst day - you’re not gonna believe this! Other phrases/words that tend to be American: - Y’all - You guys - Man (eg “Man, do I love hash browns”) - Girl (eg “Girl! That is an amazing breakfast burrito”) - What?? - Gimme - Wanna - For real

People of Britain, what's the worst thing you sent your boss by accident?

Haha I like this woman already! I’ve never heard “a fluffy” - feels more approachable than “pad” or “tampon,” which certainly are more procedural than lighthearted

Wanting to see if it was just me. These were a huge deal in elementary school for awhile. There was even talk there was a dinosaur egg in the middle.

I loved the super tiny ones (does anyone remember the Sweet Factory? Prob the best candy shop from that era) - they had the same great flavor but you could chew them.
