Is there any series about MI5 that doesn't portray them as phenomenally corrupt?

Nahhhh.... I've read all the books up to Clown Town, and these guys are not just "whoops let me blame someone else." Ingrid Tearney uses the Dogs - who are meant to keep everyone in line - as her own personal Death Squad. They kill the right-wing journalist (forgotten his name) at the end of Book 1, they kill an MI5 contractor in Dead Lions, encourage the tiger team to kill the Slow Horses, and try to kill the Slow Horses themselves. MI5 operates illegal blacksites in former soviet countries. To cover it up, Ingrid Tearney organised the assassination of a serving officer in the British Army, and framed another for it. Diana Taverner used private donations from businessmen to secretly fund revenge assassinations in Russia. Turns out one of those donations was actually from the Chinese Government. MI5 used a rapist serial killer as an informant against the IRA during The Troubles, and then gave him a new identity afterwards. Diana Taverner than blackmails the agents who supervised him into assassinating a former Home Secretary to cover up the fact MI5 was funded by Beijing. The former head of MI5 was a Russian spy. The former deputy head of MI5 was funding an ex-CIA terrorist indocrination school. The Dogs regularly torture people in the basement of Regent's Park. Claude Whelan blackmails an opposition MP with videos of him cross-dressing. That MP is then accidentally killed by MI5 agents, which is then covered up. A captured North Korean terrorist is executed after being captured. Honestly, I think that's a comprehensive enough list.

How do the privately educated appear to manage to confidently bullshit their way through life so well?

That’s true, I shouldn’t have said you assumed it. However, 3 of your 4 points concerned the parents/family of the pupil. That means you consider a high enough proportion of pupils to fit this standard. I don’t think enough do to make it noteworthy.

You assume people who go to private school are *much* wealthier and ‘connected’ than they actually are. The rich obnoxious uni students all went to private school, sure. Not everyone who goes to private school are either rich or obnoxious.

What’s your no good deed goes unpunished story?

No, I disagree. I've helped out very drunk people before plrt y of times and mostly it's been fine. I've also been helped out by very generous strangers when I've been in a bad way myself. Far from thinking that "no good deed goes unpunished", it generally convinces me of the essential goodness of man.

Well, seems like you could get away with it then. In any case, it was a deeply unserious show and it wasn't mean-spirited. I don't think that many people would care about it if asked tbh.

I never could stomach Alan Partridge enough to 'get' it. I know that I would, in the same awy as The Office and Peep Show. But god, Alan was awful. I couldn't bear watching him.

What is your view on fox hunting?

mustard5man7max3@reddit

A fox will happily chase down and kill a rabbit. Can't be very fun for the rabbit. If the fox gets too old to catch game, it'll slowly starve to death. Or its teeth will wear away and it becomes agony to eat. Or it'll injure itself, or catch a disease, or... anything else. Getting chased down and killed by a hound is about par on course. Nature isn't very nice.

Don't really care about it. I know it's definitely not popular at the moment. But I can't really be bothered enough to condemn it. It's not like the country (or nature) treats animals especially nicely in general. I'm certainly in the minority, but I honestly don't care that much about the life of a fox. There are tons of them, and it's not especially cruel. I'd much rather be a wild fox that gets eventually scragged by some hounds than a chicken in a factory farm.

I love working in an office. I *hate* the idea of working from home. I want to use public transport, walk about, meet coworkers, and go somewhere each day. Sitting alone in my room everyday would be hell.

Yeah, that's a big one. That and not ever going out. They always say it's a personal choice and both are fine, but they always, *always* have this insufferable moral superiority to them. Actually, some of them just plain say that they're better than everyone else because they don't go out or drink.

Why do all governments allow private companies to rip us off for essentials like energy?

mustard5man7max3@reddit

A lot of the private companies actually do a pretty good job, and provide good services for a reasonable price. You don't hear about it because it's never in the papers. I doubt the general public is even aware of which industries were nationalised.

Everyone (on reddit) forgets how crap the government is at running things. They say "nationalise water" like it'll be a silver bullet. It'll still be shit and cost the taxpayer millions upon millions. They then say "Oh, just make sure the government runs it well." Great plan, I'm sure nobody as ever thought of that or tried it.

Well, to be perfectly honest, I've been quite lucky in two regards genetically. I'm above average in height, and I have an above average dick size. You know what? It feels nice. It certainly isn't what my entire self-worth is based on, but it's cool to not have two of the most common insecurities in men.

I'm curious as to how that differs from any other kind of owned property. Do you complain when someone sells their dead parents house that they "have done nothing to improve the land"?

What happens to the upper class when they have no money?

mustard5man7max3@reddit

Bertie Wooster doesn't have to beg funds from his parents - they're never mentioned. Since his two aunts make frequent appearances, it can be surmised that they're not in the picture. But really, that's to give him the narrative freedom to do what he wants, without parental figures either hindering him or getting him out of scrapes. That's Jeeves' job. Bertie Wooster is himself extremely rich. I can't remember him ever having money problems. Plenty of his friends, however, rely on an (ample) allowance from their parents.

mustard5man7max3@reddit

What do you mean? They *do* just become "middle class". They slowly downgrade their homes, sell off the things they don't need, and just become like everyone else. By a couple of generations there isn't any generational wealth left. It's all just... normal. They might still be influenced by it all, of course. They might know their family history, go visit the National Trust house which their grandparents lived in, maybe they're more likely to pick up horse riding, shooting, or lacrosse.

What do British, and especially English people, think of Ireland and the Irish?

Posted by ConfidentHospital365@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 1122 comments

mustard5man7max3@reddit

I spend quite a lot of time in Ireland (republic), as my family has a house there and we have family friends there. Without fail, people are consistently friendlier, more generous, and more fun than they are in England. It's a rural area, which may have something to do with the strong community, but it's still true elsewhere. But man, on social media? You'd think the IRA is about to start bombing Westminster again. I'm honestly not sure most of them are actually Irish. I've never *once* felt any kind of resentment or hostility. It's just utterly divorced from the internet.

I couldn't imagine hating the Narnia books. The Christian parallels are there, but you can just... ignore them? They're so wonderfully charming and imaginative, you'd have to be so bloody-minded to get worked up about them.

Why do people get their babies Christened or Baptised if they don't really believe in God?

Posted by banisheduser@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 630 comments

Because it's nice to have a reason for it, and something to tie it all together. Celebrate an anniversary, or housewarming, or New Year, or Christmas, or try out a new wine... people like having a faint background reason for something.

mustard5man7max3@reddit

People never get this (and, I might say, especially so on reddit). The Church is not, and never has been, a strict question of *religion*. Such a huge part of it is the community. "Anchoring yourself to a shared community, past and present" is such a very nice way of putting it. You don't need to specifically believe in the importance of original sin, or the passage of the Israelites, or the reincarnation of Christ. That's not why people baptise their kids. It's the connection.

Reddit hates *hates* social stuff. Halloween, Bonfire Night, Christmas, New Year's, Summer Solstice, everything. They hate street parties and picnics, chatting in the pub/park/street/woods. They hate clubbing, people going to the pub, to the cafe, to the shops. They hate people who ever play music that someone else might hear. They hate a group of people singing drunkenly down the street. They hate a group of people singing hymns in a Church. "Public opinion" on reddit is always far away from what people ever actually say in person.

mustard5man7max3@reddit

You just get used to it. Since there's so much 5/10/15 minute walking every day, you get used to the idea that walking slowly will eat up your day. So you slowly walk faster and faster. You start to regularly knock 40% off Google Maps estimates. Mostly a mental thing. It's not particularly physically hard, I think. I don't think it translates much to other forms of exercise, though.
