While I agree that’s awful, surely it’s a tool being used in problematic (awful) ways? Like the same thing can be accomplished in Photoshop and there aren’t calls to ban that. Totally agree it should have guardrails in place to prevent that usage… and if those guardrails aren’t put in place *then* I can understand calls to ban it.

I could, theoretically, using perfectly legal tools and knowledge, create a break action shotgun at home. That doesn't mean I should be able to go and buy one. Nor does it mean we would be on with a tool in everyone home that, if you asked it nicely, would place one in your cupboard in an instant. The speed and ease in question is what was making it so prolific. It was as simple as typing a prompt. >(Note I’m not on X so don’t have first hand info about how awful it is). It was pretty bad. Other tools have guard rails. Grok does not. It was being used to create a hell of a lot of very illegal content, and share it extremely quickly. Even ignoring the disinformation that gets spread, the specific issues with it being used to create non-consensual images, including of children, should be enough for action to be taken.

While I broadly agree with you, I think having guardrails put in should be enough. Once upon a time you could use Photoshop to easily make counterfeit money. They didn’t ban PS, they put guardrails in to prevent that. Once upon a time there was heinous CSM shared widely on Reddit - they didn’t ban Reddit, because Reddit stopped it. I’m in favour of making them improve the tool, rather than immediately banning it - though if they won’t do that, it should be banned.

I agree that the AI should have guardrails to prevent it being used in that way. It sounds like those guardrails have been put into place (note I haven’t and obviously won’t test this personally). If those guardrails are now in place, the same as ChatGPT and Gemini etc have, should it still be banned? Photoshop has no such guard rails though. Should it be banned?

It’s like banning e-scooters, or guns after Dunblane. Obviously you go after any people committing a crime. Then you ALSO need to do something to limit the negative impacts that future criminals will have using the tool. The guardrails argument is nonsense. They’ll have guardrails only to the point where it doesn’t get banned, and even on that point they’re continuously pushing the boundary. As far as I’m concerned, they’ve already had their leeway and now it’s banning time. I think it’s completely reasonable to assume that this has been identified as an issue internally at xAI and the decision was taken to not completely block it, in the interest of revenue. There are multiple LLMs in the market. Punish bad actors and maybe the others will actually regulate their content. Maybe Grok could be unbanned in a year or two once standards improve.

It’s not the same, you ask Grok to create an image and it does, if I use photoshop I’m creating the image, just the same as if I picked up a brush and painted it. With photoshop or a paintbrush you are the artist, with AI deepfakes the AI is the artist. That doesn’t mean people asking it to generate this stuff aren’t also wrong, but not having AI deepfakes that can generate this horrible stuff available in the first place is a no brainer.

The other poster put it better. Firearms are illegal in the UK. A vending machine that makes firearms would also be illegal in the UK. But you *could* go out, right now, to B&Q and a few other places and buy all the necessary tools and materials, and with some skills, use them to make a firearm - yet despite this, we don't ban basic tools and DIY shops. Right now, Grok is like the vending machine. It should be illegal, and those maintaining it should face legal sanctions.

Does it matter if its an adult versus a child? Or a man versus a woman? Where is the line for you? You claim its the same as Photoshop but it isn't. The key difference is ease of access/ease of use. Photo editing software requires time and effort a lot of people won't put in. The AI software does the hard work for you, meaning more can be created faster and by more people.

No, I don't like the idea of the government reach extending further and further on the internet, especially if the argument is "it's dangerous" or "foreign actors use it", it's an easy thing to tack on to pretty much anything the government don't want us to see. It also doesn't really solve much, foreign actors are everywhere and so are dangerous ideas, disinformation spreads everywhere and the very idea that we could exist on some totally danger and foreign actor free area on the internet that is dangerous, I mean god forbid reform ever get in and were also trying to ban "dangerous" internet sites and foreign actors, can you imagine what kind of stuff they might ban? as for the AI features I sadly think the cat is somewhat out the bag with that one, it's obviously not good but I'm pretty sure I could download a local model and start generating illegal and immoral things, if not just find someone who does or a group that does and you essentially have the same issue. This isn't to say that we shouldn't be pushing for better moderation but banning things rarely solves much.

Twitter should go but, we do not need more government censorship in the UK such as this. It's demonstrably ineffective at preventing \*the types of people you want off Twitter\*, from getting to Twitter. We need better education programs (Teach people how to identify butt trumpets), more effective enforcement of existing regulations (Grok spewing CSAM? Material fine per instance, no negotiating, no "do better next time", no "we're looking into it"). Longer term, we need significant reform of digital rights. Like, we took cartoons off cereal so kids would eat healthy. We need to treat digital spaces with the same kind of action, they're highly addictive and utilise sinister tactics like rage-bait, FOMO, or dark patterns such as infinite scrolling. There's really no current counter-incentive for a company like X or Meta to not explicitly seek the most addictive measures possible to maximise profit. And through that, we get such polarising content - creators & institutions politically weaponising anything they can for engagement.

I don't think either should be banned. Disinformation and hatred is spread everywhere, here on Reddit, Tik Tok, Facebook, Instagram even in the news. As for Grok everyone can point the finger and blame Grok, but that is the AI tool, the people using the tool are the ones asking it to create these images. So whats scary is that even if you ban Grok those same nonces are still here and will just find another way to get off. It does need limiting but why should the majority be punished because a few exploit it.

I don't know but I said that it should be prevented from making these images which is entirely possible, rather than an outright complete ban. Of course theres going to be other non mainstream AI tools that people will use instead to create CP and that might make it more difficult to identify if they are real children or not. The line between AI and reality is already becoming blurred. I feel like photographic and video evidence is already dead, as it was once factual but can now be faked convincingly and it's scary.

As far as I understand he believes in singularity etc etc, and that's why he's striving for it himself - so that it would be HE who is first and in control, because he is terrified of anyone else gaining firsts in that field. You’re afraid of typing “Elon Musk”, so you shouldn’t be contributing to any discussions. The UK needs to be careful on putting up too many barriers, or they’ll fall behind if other countries don’t similarly hamstring themselves with regard to technology usage. Obviously @spez will disagree, but I believe that section 230¹, whilst important in the USA, should remain inapplicable for content accessed the UK. ¹ Section 230 provides immunity to online platforms which moderate content from liability for third-party content. In the UK OSA places significant responsibility on platforms for user content. The argument is that if you decide what to exclude (via moderation) then the platform is an editorial publication and you remain responsible for the content within. It may not seem it, to the lay person, setting new content early (or reading content from a different legislative area, or simply that they disagree with) but Reddit does a great job of moderating out illegal content. X does not, and should be held to the same standards everyone else is.

For every person that says it should be banned for disinformation someone else will say it should remain because its a source of truth. You've just got to let people make up their own minds based on what they can see, banning content/platforms is very risky. While I would like to see companies stop using it and I do believe they should persuaded and they should be shown alternatives, I do believe they should have the right to use it as they please, at least we know who is who and then the consumer can choose who's products they buy/use. While I despite the far right, I do believe people are allowed to have their views but these extreme views shouldn't dominate the mainstream or 'town square' as Musk has basically done with X I'd say if anything a fine/tax on companies advertising there would be good(vs banning them from advertising there). This keeps things open but it will incur a penalty. Still cracks me up when Muskler sued companies who collectively decided not to advertise on X.

All this shit with Grok being able to generate child porn, and Musk & Co trying to 'blame' the AI system itself and have it 'apologise' is really really weird, especially as news outlets seem to be going along with it. I think it needs to be nipped in the bud now (even now is about 3 years too late), both apps should be outright banned and removed from applicable app stores in the UK until A LOT more controls and regulations are put in place. I'd already decided, much like TikTok, I plan to die without ever using it myself. It now seems to be used to undress people. In the space of a few yours on Saturday I saw Priti Patel and Jeremy Clarkson in bikinis (difficult walks but I powered through) and Unai Emery in a wedding dress (delightful). Deep fake porn was an early concern with AI. We seem to be heading there unfortunately. Scary times. I watched quite a good YouTube video by redlettermedia about AI usage. It mebtioned a number of things AI should be used for, like in medicine and air traffic control, and the one thing it definitely shouldn't be used for - entertainment, which is all it actually seems to be being used for.

That’s an extremely important question that people, and the power in place, will never take seriously. It’s not just X and grok, which both represent two different issues. For social networks, we could, based on scientific and engineering facts, ban any platform that does not respect certain rules. First of all, full open visibility of the source code AND infra for regulating bodies to audit and make sure that they obey these rules. Social networks are currently having an astonishing number of negative impacts on our societies. Grok and other LLM are an absolute shit show (and I work in AI). It’s the far west and won’t be properly regulated until something terrible happens. This for one reason: 1. It’s the n1 driver for “”growth”” in the world. Personally, I think that LLMs pause a far lesser treat to Human kind than social networks. People can see when they are wrong, maybe not all the time, but sometimes they see it, and this is enough to induce a lack of trust (slowly, over time). Social networks? Nah, it’s som duckin devil creation.

Information and propaganda are the new front line of warfare. Arguably they always _were_ the front line of warfare. When someone makes something that's designed to influence conversation to their viewpoint, that's a propaganda weapon. Some might say X because a weapon the moment it incorporated an algorithm to determine the feed. Some might argue it became a weapon when politicians started using it, or when it allowed bot posts via API. Some might argue that it became a weapon when Grok was introduced. I don't think there is any argument left that X isn't a weapon of propaganda after Elon publicly criticised Grok for telling the truth and announced that it would have its algorithm adjusted. So yeah, I think it should be banned. I think Facebook should be put under strict review. I even think LinkedIn should be given some warnings about AI slop posting. I will say that I don't think humanity is fundamentally incapable of independent thought and resisting propaganda attack. I do think there isn't yet a society I've seen that I believe is currently capable of resisting it though. I think we need to curtail things AND improve/reform social education.

All of the generative AI models should be. No questions asked. Taking jobs away from real people and contributing to even more environmental damage when we're moving towards being greener than most. No one needs a tool that is just "Google but will lie to you and be wrong half the time".

Yes otherwise digital ID should be required and full accountability for all users. It is a slippery slope, I'm for freedom of choice yet we are in an unprecedented era, this is the age of information, misinformation, disinformation and when you have a megalomaniac with an ideology and immense power directly pushing a narrative and trying to topple governments, action must be taken. The world was fine before twitter/X and Social media, it will be fine after.

I think there should definitely be a move, starting with government institutions, for business and organisations to stop using the platform. The fact that our pm is sending out tweets daily on such a controversial platform is both unnecessary and actually quite dangerous

Definitely. It would force organisations to find alternative social media, and I'm desperate for that to happen. I'm on X purely to get the info I want, but unfortunately isnt shared anywhere else. I make it sound exciting, but it's really just non-league football related.

I'd rather see the government lead by example and not use it for any of their official communications. If businesses follow suit, most of the individuals on the platform will be Musk sympathisers who'd be able to get around a ban with a VPN anyway.
