Set of grandparents (1978-1981)

lmapidly@reddit

I'm 44 and my maternal grandparents are 82. Unfortunately we don't get along, lol. Lost my maternal great grandparents when I was...22-ish. My fam has kids kinda young.

I always had the young parents growing up… curious about others parents gen culture.

You can still buy Tulip puffy paint. Isn't that wild?! I can actually see a large bottle of plain white from where I sit in my home office....I use it for holiday crafts. Great for detailed snow effects, gingerbread man frosting trim, etc.

Fellow Xennials - how much do you have saved for retirement and are you panicking yet?

Posted by Free_Village_4836@reddit | Xennials | View on Reddit | 742 comments

lmapidly@reddit

I have just under $70k in my 401k now at 43. Panicking slightly, yes. One thing I have going for me though is that my cost of living is relatively low. We refi'd the mortgage during the dip in rates and owe about 135k on the house, and I purposely picked a house we could age into, so that's a better situation than a lot of people are in and I'm grateful for that.

Thanks for the shirt! Honored to wear it around. 1981!

I thought it was just my class of 99, lol. We had an 11 year reunion b/c everyone was too lazy to organize anything earlier...and nothing since.

Do you find it boring the way everyone's car has to be as brand new and expensive looking as possible nowadays?

How many of you still have your tongue piercing?

Posted by internal-combustion@reddit | Xennials | View on Reddit | 112 comments

lmapidly@reddit

I got a bunch of piercings back in the day. I'm 43 now and still wear the tongue, labret, septum, and nostril piercings, plus three in each ear. But with more subtle smaller gold toned jewelry these days. I can still wear a lower lip ring too but don't wear it as often as I used to.

How many people on here are actually Xennials (born 1977-83)? Just curious because sometimes it seems like just as many comments come from people outside the cohort as within.

44F - Anyone else dealing with perimenopause?

lmapidly@reddit

I'm 43 and yup, although now it's a bit weird because I had to have a hysterectomy a couple of years ago due to nasty fibroids. I'd been bleeding for months and no one seemed super concerned but I pushed for more testing until they were found. So nice to have yeeted the ute, lol. I kept my ovaries though so... some perimenopause symptoms but also kinda harder to tell without a uterus.

I'm 43. Was with my first spouse for about 12 years (not married that whole time). Unfortunately it didn't work out. However, my second marriage (together about 11 years so far) is going wonderfully. We're a fabulous match. We both work from home and somehow don't get tired of each other. Our life feels very relaxed and comforting, and fun.

43, childfree by choice. Spouse is a bit older than me and has a young adult child. No regrets! My genes suck and I would not have been a very good parent.

In my family, everyone (but me) had kids young. I'm 43, my parents are 62, my maternal grandparents are 81. My great grandparents lasted until I was in my early 20s.

I WFH full time... have for 10 years. That said, I am expected to keep regular office hours, so I get up at 7:30 during the week. Closer to 9:30 on weekends, depending on how late I was up. Usually in bed by 11, asleep by midnight or so during the week. I don't have kids; that would really change things if I did. I do like to have some time to get ready in the morning though. I was always more of a natural night owl and used to sleep in later on weekends, but I guess as I age, my clock has shifted a bit... plus the dog demands I get up and feed him by 9 at the latest, lol. At least he'll lay back down for a bit after. It's not uncommon for the spouse and I to fall asleep on the couch after dinner for a brief nap. That's definitely something that feels like more of a must the older we get, lol.

Having this discussion on another sub and thinking it might be a generational thing. Do you use closed captioning when watching TV? I don’t and it seems younger people do.

I never had a childhood home; my dad was military and we moved a lot. That said, there was this one base house we all really loved. Half of a duplex with a cool full basement. We were there about...4 years maybe? I have a lot of awesome childhood memories there. Unfortunately they were old and all got torn down and replaced by new housing a long time ago, and it breaks my heart. I still dream about that place... Been in my and my spouse's current house for 8 whole years now, which breaks my personal record by two years. Hope I never have to move again tbh.

I can only see them inverted because the only way I can get them to work is to cross my eyes until the pattern matches up, but everything's inside-out.

Is anyone doing okay financially in the big picture? I keep reading about how barely anyone has anything saved up for retirement while I'm doing pretty great. I don't mean that as a flex in any way. I'm just worried everyone my age will be working until they're 80 while I hope to retire by 60.

Posted by eatsleepdive@reddit | Xennials | View on Reddit | 178 comments

lmapidly@reddit

I'm 42 and doing really OK. Don't have nearly as much saved for retirement as I'm supposed to...I think there's about $40k in my 401k. But my cost of living is low because we got lucky buying a house in a relatively rural area 7 years ago before prices got super crazy, and my spouse and I each make pretty good money. I feel SUPER lucky to be living what my parents consider to be a firmly middle class living. What a weird timeline.
