Max hull speed on 1985 C&C

An ORC cert will generate polars. OP would have to pay and enter all their sail data of course but I'd guess that someone has already measured the hull and all that.

Tackle question

The part of the block at the top you secure the line to is called a becket. If you're going to actually lift 400 lbs you will want to get some decent name brand blocks rated for that capacity.

join a R2AK crew in Vancouver BC

Registration for 2026 opens on Nov 15 with the deadline to apply usually being US Tax Day (April 15, 2026). The best part about R2AK is you can race whatever, and make the race as hard or easy as you desire. What is your current 25 ft boat? I did the race in 2016 if you want some beta shoot me a DM.

Electrical troubleshooting

hackshowcustoms@reddit

Check out the BlueSea panels, they're a big improvement. Did the power cable come with any adaptors? It's possible it was just used as a fancy extension cord for a battery charger. Does the boat have any GFCI outlets or things that would run off shore power?

What are you supposed to do when you're stuck in a whirlpool at sea?

Posted by trimTheJib@reddit | sailing | View on Reddit | 170 comments

hackshowcustoms@reddit

If you think that's cool you should check out the RTC race in Nov, pretty common to see multiple boats in whirlpools at the same time around Turn Point. The only real move is to avoid or at the least stick to the side that gives you a push but sometimes these options don't present themselves.

How long would it take for a novice to sail on a Nacra?

Posted by andreahh_@reddit | sailing | View on Reddit | 30 comments

hackshowcustoms@reddit

It really depends what role on the boat you're looking to do but assuming your more experienced friend will helm being crew in a NACRA isn't as complicated as it looks. You just need to know what everything does and when to pull what lines. Double handed boats take alot of teamwork so you and your friend will need to figure out some things but having no experience can be a good thing, it means you don't have any bad habits. In collegiate sailing we often recruited crews with no experience, it was their fitness and willingness to learn that were the most important to the team. Best thing to do is get out sailing with your friend and see what it's like.

OP not sure where you're located but on the east coast of Canada they have a decent Bluenose OD fleet that races regattas like Chester Race Week, maybe one of those clubs would like a donated boat to use for learn to sail programs.

New to sailing

Posted by babiekittin@reddit | sailing | View on Reddit | 43 comments

hackshowcustoms@reddit

If you haven't heard about it already the Northwest Maritime Center in Port Townsend WA runs a race to Ketchikan called the Race 2 Alaska. They have a really good media presence and produce alot of content plus over the years alot of racers have made some good documentaries about their experiences. You should check it out, it gives a really good idea of what it's like and places that you might want to visit along the way. The winner is usually in a super fast multi hull or race boat but the middle and back of the fleet is made up of the riffraff in every type of watercraft you can imagine with varying skill levels. It's great inspiration even if you don't plan to ever do the race. Also starting this year there will be another race around Puget Sound called the Washington 360 that's meant to be a feeder race and allow sailors to develop the skills needed to do the R2AK.

Flying into Bari Italy from western Canada, any tips?

Posted by Littlepastthemiddle@reddit | Shoestring | View on Reddit | 8 comments

hackshowcustoms@reddit

I recently flew back from Paris to Vancouver on WestJet for $500 (Can - one way) and noticed that they have very similarly priced flights to the UK. Once in the UK Easy Jet has cheap flights from London Gatwick to Bari starting at like $30 Cad. Maybe a combination of the two is what you're looking for?

Posted by arbitrageME@reddit | sailing | View on Reddit | 11 comments

After doing a lot of research on sailing I really want to do it full time. However I get motion sick in cars and I’ve never been on a boat aside from a row boat or a 10 minute long ferry. Does seasickness go away by itself after a while at sea?

Posted by Bottledwaffle2@reddit | sailing | View on Reddit | 39 comments

hackshowcustoms@reddit

As someone who gets seasick but still spends alot of time on boats two tips I use to mitigate are: 1) avoid alcohol the night before you leave and caffeine the morning of the start of the trip if you know it's going to be wavy & 2) bring lots of ginger candy like Gin Gins (but even gingersnap cookies made with real ginger will work).

hackshowcustoms@reddit

OP where are you based? Assuming lower mainland, do not be fooled into believing that the Strait of Georgia is calm. It deserves respect like the open ocean. Also it's worth considering joining a yacht club for the outstations, working from anchor can be fun but having multiple club houses in all the places you want to visit anyways is a great perk for when you need to be at a dock for whatever reason.

There is a tweaker block hidden from view behind the stanchion. It's a personal preference thing but using a tweaker instead of a downhaul is alot easier for shorthanded sailing because there is one less thing to do when adjusting pole position. You do have to remember to release it for gybes.

Can I tighten the mainsheet while I hoist the sail?

Posted by Formiddabledrip@reddit | sailing | View on Reddit | 52 comments

hackshowcustoms@reddit

Either will help hold the boom in place parallel with the deck when hoisting the main so its movements will be less erratic and you'll feel more comfortable with the sheet eased.

18s are great boats, you have to really try to bury the bow. Even in light but puffy conditions I'll sit forward if the shrouds with an arm resting on the front cross beam and get my crew to do the same on the leeward side.

Jib cars look too far back, have you experimented with them further forward and the jib sheeted in more? The sail should be like ~1" away from the spreaders when going upwind.

Bytes are great boats, think of them like a laser but modernized and simplified. They also make a larger rig to turn it into a CII or "super byte" which would be a fun upgrade when you get some experience.
