Autoland Saves King Air, Everyone Reported Safe

It’s not an elaborate justification, it’s literally the best choice. If I was designing this system from scratch in a perfect world I’d still recommend a robotic voice over a natural voice.

UX professional here. I would 100% recommend a robotic voice as an intentional design choice over a natural sounding voice. It’s crucial that ATC know they are not communicating with a person that can’t read back, take instructions or confirm clearance to land. It makes it unmistakable that a robot is running the show, even if you didn’t know that this system existed before it announced its intentions.

My father says my aviation career path will be replaced by AI-am I wasting my time?

I’m a researcher, AI is coming fast for my job. I was previously a teacher, AI is coming for them too. AI is not coming for pilots. They’d first of all have to build AI enabled planes. That’s at least 20 years out just to get the plane, never mind the AI technology isn’t even close to being what’s needed. AI can synthesise and regurgitate information. It can’t make decisions. I think pilots are one of the last jobs that would be taken. If AI comes for anyone in aviation, it’ll be ATC, and that’s not likely happening anytime soon.

How do I buy an engagement ring?

Posted by Weary-Tomatillo9134@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 306 comments

flagondry@reddit

Stay away from the big online boutiques, they are way overpriced. They’re the ones that come up when you Google something generic like “diamond engagement rings”. If you use one of her existing rings to get the size, make sure it’s one she actually wears on her ring finger. But as others have said, it’s better not to make the ring a surprise unless she’s asked you to do that’s Get a cheap ring to propose and make sure to tell her it’s a placeholder immediately as soon as she sees it and you’ll get a ring together as part of the proposal! If she sees a ring that’s completely not her style and thinks it’s the real engagement ring you risk really upsetting her and that’s definitely not how you want the proposal to go!

Not only can you not tell the difference, they are molecularly identical. There’s literally no reason to buy mined diamonds anymore.

I mostly use it instead of Google and as a work companion. It’s like a sparring partner for brainstorming. I get it to write summaries, emails, come up with workshop ideas, make fun quizzes for team events, help me write surveys, summarise academic literature, help me think through project tasks, you name it. I’ve found it a bit rubbish at writing code, so that’s not been worthwhile. I also use it as a bit of a therapist for myself, to help me understand my relationship and areas for self improvement. That’s also been super helpful and much faster than researching with Google. I have an advanced degree in psychology so I can take a critical eye to its output.

Why are there so many people convinced of the mythical “obese but healthy” population? Why do so many people think BMI says people who are obese are actually healthy??

Posted by HorseFacedDipShit@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 255 comments

flagondry@reddit

BMI works for most people- and the people it doesn’t work for know who they are. Nobody is in doubt about whether they’re a bodybuilder or not. But there are obese people under the illusion that they are not obese because they hear people say that BMI is a bad measure.

Women - what was your mother's attitudes towards periods?

Posted by Secret_Owl3040@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 384 comments

flagondry@reddit

My mum made it seem so shameful the one and only time she ever tried to tell me about periods (reluctantly, and clearly so embarrassed to be talking about it that she didn’t communicate anything especially useful) that I was too scared to tell her when I first got it. I spent about a year stuffing tissue in my underwear until she finally found all my blood stained underwear I was hiding in a drawer. I was still so embarrassed that it would even be mine that I considered trying to pretend they belonged to a friend (my 12 year old brain thought that made sense) but I was actually so relieved when she found out because having to go to school while basically free bleeding was so traumatic and I desperately needed pads. She only ever bought the “normal” pads and tampons but my periods were so heavy that I needed the super strength ones. I leaked every time. After a few years, I finally plucked up the courage to ask her to buy the stronger ones. She scoffed and said “you don’t need that”. And I never mentioned it again. My mum was like this with everything. Periods, body hair, body odour, going to the doctor, and having any kind of emotion, were all the most shameful experiences I could have.

People who have moved to the UK from elsewhere, what were the big culture shocks?

Posted by YourOldPalWill@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 1476 comments

flagondry@reddit

I’m British living in Denmark, so these are my reverse culture shocks about the UK now: - carpets in houses - wearing shoes indoors (this is extra gross when coupled with the carpets) - washing machines in kitchens instead of in the bathroom - no plug sockets in bathrooms / using a hair dryer in rooms with carpets 🤢 - post going to a depot a million miles from your house - homes aren’t well insulated - going out for lunch at work instead of eating lunch with your colleagues in the cantine - asking “how are you” but you aren’t actually asking for a real answer - using umbrellas instead of wearing rain gear - poor public transport & expensive - dogs are allowed in pubs - using WhatsApp and PayPal - no social security number (and therefore having to manually change your address everywhere when you move) - not starting with until 9am, and not ending until 5pm
