What’s a piece of British comedy hall of fame you just don’t get?

At the time it was released, I thought it was spot on and I go back to Simon the IT guy on a regular basis but couldn't give the whole show a rewatch. It's so close to the real thing, it's depressing. Need just that bit more absurdity and think that's why the US version is much more palatable.

So who's quitting their job/career in 2026 and why?

Posted by boringdystopianslave@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 159 comments

ficus77@reddit

I would like to. I feel I've done marketing/digital work enough now and while I accept some aspect of tech in any job, much rather it was a lesser part and didn't suck all my enthusiasm out of me. At 48, it's not a simple choice in my mind. Or maybe it is and I throw caution to the wind. No idea what I'll do next.

Who would win in a fight : Postman Pat or Fireman Sam ?

Posted by lespauljames@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 214 comments

ficus77@reddit

Sam has that firefighter fitness so if it were about stamina, he'd go the distance. Little known fact about Pat is that he's actually banned from all FA football grounds for scrapping with Dutch supporters during Euro 2000. Not a nice bloke to be on the wrong side of and definitely carries a boxcutter on him at all times.

In the main, Zara and Uniqlo. The fit on most of their stuff is to my liking and I am generally a block colour, no logos/graphics kind of guy except for t-shirts I get at gigs. It's a simple life.

Without Googling, do the names Rommel, Montgomery, Paulus, and Dönitz mean anything to you? And roughly old are you?

Posted by Norman_debris@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 1050 comments

ficus77@reddit

48. Rommel and Montgomery were opposites in the North Africa theatre of WW2. Donitz was an admiral of the German navy? Not sure about Paulus. Recognise the name and at a guess, I'd say a Roman general perhaps.

Draw a line from Colchester, over Luton, around Oxford and down to Southampton and I'd say you have the "South" ot England. Everything immediately above is either the Midlands or East Anglia, and everything to the West in England is the "West".

Fellow Brits who remember 9/11, how did you react to it?

Posted by ItsaGEO1994@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 1329 comments

ficus77@reddit

Walked into the canteen for the afternoon tea break at work and everyone was glued to the TV. Really shocked by the footage from the scene. The days and weeks that followed were unsettling. Weirdly, the world right now with recent events in Ukraine and Palestine makes me feel a similar way.

Believe me, I have tried but as I said in another response, the necessity and destination of home makes the walk have tangible limits. An idea occurs that perhaps I need to trick my brain into feeling that the after work walk has purpose to it.

ficus77@reddit (OP)

See, I do for walks and I do like a good walk but I also find them quite listless which makes me feel kind of worse. At least when I worked in an office and walked home it was out of necessity and had a destination (and the comfort of home) attached to it. I walk around the block at lunchtime. Walking after work just feels like ambling for no reason. Quite the negative attitude I know and if you saw the coastal area I live, you'd probably tell me to pack it in ha

Impact wrench recs for novice hobbyist?

Posted by Mysterious-Glove-179@reddit | projectcar | View on Reddit | 20 comments

ficus77@reddit

Always useful to have an impact wrench for getting those stubborn bolts and nuts off. I wouldn't use one on my wheel lug nuts/bolts without first putting a breaker bar on each to loosen them up. The torque wrench you mention is for doing the nuts/bolts back up to torque spec for your car after you've spun them back on. Different job. With regards to a hobby work, as some else said - choose a power system and go with that. I pony'd up for Milwaukee 12v range - more than enough for my needs, quality kit and lots of options for other jobs.

Is it unreasonable here to decline going to one of my best mates’ stag do?

Posted by Griselda_69@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 498 comments

ficus77@reddit

Sack it off, man. I feel you on pretty much all of those points. I'm 47 and have been on 4 stag dos and that is enough for me. They bring out the worst in male behaviour, I find and not really something I want to encourage. I was invited to a stag do this Summer and declined. My plan is to send the stag group a bottle of something nice I'm there in spirit (figuratively and literally). Fair compromise.

How much was a drink/pint when you first started going out?

Posted by Full-Tea2391@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 419 comments

ficus77@reddit

I think when I first started drinking around 1994, a pint in Hertfordshire was about £2.50/£3 maybe All very fuzzy strangely enough. I do remember being able to get at least 3 pints out of a tenner though. I also remember some outrage in Brighton a few years ago when pints in pubs hit £5. Seemed like a watershed moment.

Posted by ConstantDesmond@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 933 comments

ficus77@reddit

Given the size of their premises and how quiet they are, Mountain Warehouse. At least Trespass go for smaller shops. I don't get how MW afford to stay open. Money laundering front comes to mind. Where I live they're actually closing down the old shop (sure there will be the Closing Down Sale to end all Closing Down Sales) and moving over the road to an even bigger place with a whole Animal section tacked on. Mind boggling (and also wholly depressing). Any MW staff want to give us their insight?

How old are you and what was the first historic / national event you remember?

I do indeed. Things I remember are the explosions on the TV and the SAS, and my family gathered in front of the TV. Not much more details. The memory of me and my brother reenacting it is stronger.

47yo. Iranian embassy siege in 1980. Sticks in my mind as my older brother and I went on to reenact it with our action man toys and my sister's Cindy mansion.

Why is everyone running marathons?

Posted by octopus-burger@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 94 comments

ficus77@reddit

If it's for a cause, then maybe it shows that generation are more altruistic. Running 26.2 miles in one sitting is no small feat (finisher here - respectable 4h 55m - took 18 weeks of training) and people like a challenge. Plus I feel like there's more marathon events today than there were maybe in the 90s and back.
