If you think this is a good idea you're likely not a good developer. Fine for jr devs who are clueless to learn but not for ppl who actually get things done.

They're copying everything into it. Exceptions, designed poorly have passwords and secrets. Copy paste. Nothing to do with source control.

All the large companies I consult for have now blocked Github-CoPilot. It was allowed until ChatGPT came along and companies realized ppl were dumping everything including passwords to these sites.

If you use AI to teach you how to code, remember you still need to think for yourself

Posted by LinearArray@reddit | programming | View on Reddit | 274 comments

eigenman@reddit

You better think for yourself because the code ChatGPT writes is almost certainly wrong. And you'll have to check it every time yourself. It's good for templating and then fixing the template but asking it to do even basic math is hilariously bad.

Yup. AI enthusiasts don't actually know how to code. You will have to check the work of every prompt result and so might as well just Google it yourself if you don't know it. It's literally a waste of time.

The I in LLM stands for intelligence

Posted by wheybags@reddit | programming | View on Reddit | 288 comments

eigenman@reddit

For programming and math, it wastes so much time because at first glance it looks kinda ok. Then you work it out and it's wrong 50% of the time. Way better tools out there for this than LLM.

ChatGPT Isn't Coming for Your Coding Job

eigenman@reddit

I don't consider any of this actual "AI" More like a Stochastic Parrot. I use Github Co-Pilot which is helpful. More helpful because it actually targets code. It also existed before GPT. Co-Pilot is just more advanced intellisense. It is wrong a lot but what it is good at is copying the code you just wrote and substituting in the new values you want. Hardly intelligent.

Been doing this a long time and have been a contractor now for most of it when I realized that there is always this type of Bullshit. It isn't new. So now when this kind of soft layoff tactic pops up, I just say you don't have to renew my contract. In fact they are obligated to tell me if the contract won't be renewed at least 30 days from the end. I make as much as I can and it's adi-fucking-ose. And I get all the references for the next gig which has always appeared. Every fucking time.
